NB FILM CO-OP'S NEW SOCIAL NETWORK SITE
If there is one thing that Facebook has proven, it's the fact that people like spying on their friends' newest status updates, photos, videos, blogs and wall posts. For the past couple years social networking sites like facebook have captivated over 150 million users worldwide connecting friends and family of all ages. Don't bother picking up the phone anymore, your friend's status message tells all! Welcome to the wonderful world of social networking!
Introducing the new NBFC Online Community.
This private social network will only be made available to NB Film Co-op members and will be administered by Cat with Chafic Haddad's technical expertise.
Here members will have access to several web services such posting photos, videos, website information and important information for shoots and past films. This resource will allow NB Film members to stay in the loop with projects on the go and will put a face to some of the names we read about in the weekly newsletter.
Why would you start ANOTHER social network if you already have facebook? Well the difference here is that this new network will focus only on members of the film co-op and can be used almost as the IMDB (Internet movie database) for the NB Filmmakers Co-op. Please take a minute to explore the new website @ http://nbfilmcoop.ning.com
TWITTER AND FILMMAKERS
Twitter is a service for friends, family, and co–workers to communicate and stay connected through the exchange of quick, frequent answers to one simple question: What are you doing?
Twitter is a simple social networking tool which has gained much popularity in 2008 as more bloggers and internet junkies discovered a new broadcast platform which limits each post to 140 characters. Twitter can be kept as a private network between friends however, many people spy on what public conversations are happening using the Twitter search engine: www.search.twitter.com
Here you can search for topics such as "Canadian film" and anyone who has mentioned those words in a tweet will be displayed. If you dig what a person is "tweeting" about, you have the option of following their twitter feed which shows up in an aggregated friend feed.
Many argue that this form of mini-blogging is a waste of time, however if you are a content creator or the author of a blog, why not use Twitter as a means of reaching out to like minded individuals? Many artists are using Twitter to launch works of art as well as to network with other artists to share resources and information. Twitter is a great platform for bloggers who want to connect to their readers and let them know when they've updated their blog or website. Give it a try at Twitter.com and start following twitter.com/chaf
The Film Co-op staff thanks Chafic Haddad for all his hard work creating the Film Co-op network and getting the Film Co-op involved in Twitter!

RENEWED MEMBERS FOR 2009 RENEWED MEMBERS FOR 2009
BronweN has been telling stories ever since she was able to do things that weren't purely for survival. For BronweN, carefully crafted communication is somewhat of an obsession.
BronweN has expressed her obsession with storytelling in many forms, including a full length CD, oodles of poems, short stories, short screenplays, full feature screenplays, and a sci-fi novel that she will admit writing, but refuses to show to anyone. Recently, one of BronweN's short screenplays, A Saturday Affair, was chosen as part of the Fredericton Cultural Capital Project and will be shot once the snow lifts.
BronweN is equally in love with acting. Most recently, she appeared as both Scientia and The Potato Goddess in Chris Giles' film, The Birth of a Nicola, and as Sarah Dark in Gia Milani's film, A Dark Radius, which won the prestigious CBC 3-2-1 award and will be airing on CBC television.
BronweN is just as interested in working behind the camera as she is acting in front of the lens. She looks forward to working with all of the new fantastic people she has met over the past year in the coop and wishes to everyone a prosperous year.
"2009 will be the year when possibilities become realities!"

SPECIAL EVENTS COMING UP AT THE NBFC IN JANUARY
FREDERICTON - SPECIAL NB FILM CO-OP SCREENING EVENT AT DOODLES CAFE
WHAT: The Cloud of Unknowing (feature film)
When: Saturday, Jan. 17, 2009 at 7pm sharp!
Where: Doodles Café in the Charlotte Street Art Centre at 732 Charlotte Street, Fredericton NB
Free of charge, all welcome.
The Cloud of Unkowing is my first feature film. It was made at the beginning of the DV revolution that shook the film world. Much of my work borders on the edges of narration. With a background in photography I can't help but sense the inherent narrative within a still image. I took a photograph of an older French gentleman walking with a young Japanese woman and that's where the story of the film was initiated.
Although I knew these people the image itself was haunting and made me think of, believe it or not, Romeo and Juliet. I thought "What if Romeo lived and twenty years later saw someone he thought was Juliet as a twenty year old. What would he feel? Joy? Grief? Guilt?" The resulting film is a departure from that original impetus but still carries within it the guilt I associate with what I believe would have been Romeo's feelings. At the time of the making of the film I was fascinated by the aesthetic of a restrained elegance and logic that can be found in the artworks of China and Japan.
Although I wrote the story and find it uniquely western in its relation to materialism and guilt it is nevertheless overarched by this Asian quality of restraint.
One reviewer Maitland McDonagh, was most perceptive in her remarks about the film which I quote here: "Richard Sylvarnes' first feature is a delicate watercolor dream of a ghost story, as unsubstantial and tremulously haunting as an unquiet spirit." I find that a very apt sentence. The Cloud Of Unknowing is closer to a small precious watercolor than to a giant expressionist canvas.
Artist Biography
Sylvarnes is a filmmaker and photographer whose work has been shown at national and international venues. He was recently nominated for a Rockefeller Renew Media Fellowship and as an interdisciplinary artist in conjuncition with choreographer David Neumann received a grant from Creative Capital for their upcoming project Big Eater. His second feature length film H.C.E. premiered as an official selection at the 5th Tribeca Film Festival. Its experimental nature calls to mind the birth of cinema, carny shows, tableaux photography, and flip books as the film tells a dream of western history. His most recent credit is directing Bate Papo Em Nova Iorque for Brazilian television. His first feature length film The Cloud Of Unknowing premiered at the inaugural Tribeca Film Festival in 2002 continuing on in festivals throughout Asia and Europe and was released by Possible Films in 2004. His latest works are Imperial Animal which showed at the Chelsea Art Museum in New York, Landscape After The Battle commissioned by Matador Records for the band Interpol, and Siberia for fashion designer Miho Miho.
Please check out the artist's website at: www.sylvarnes.net for further information.

GALLERY CONNEXION AND THE NB FILM CO-OP PRESENTS:
The Astounding Adventures of Strongman and Quickboy
By Peter Kingstone
When: Thursday, Jan. 22, 2009 at 7pm sharp!
Where: Doodles Café in the Charlotte Street Art Centre at 732 Charlotte Street, Fredericton NB
Cost: By donation
Join us in the intimate setting of Doodles Café at the Charlotte Street Art Centre to view The Astounding Adventures of Strongman and Quickboy, the first feature length video by Toronto artist Peter Kingstone.
The Astounding Adventures of Strongman and Quick Boy is a narrative about disease, death, love getting older, and sex. Dave and Adam have a meager existence as prostitutes in Toronto, when Dave receives a call from a friend in Sudbury. They must rush off in hopes of saving her. Adam spends most of his time writing comic books and is retelling his story as Strongman and Quickboy, as they fly of to Nebulon 5 to battle Xenon and save Princess Ariana. He has also brought along his video camera to capture the action. These two narratives coexist along the road, till they meet King Kipling, who crystallizes their concerns through pop philosophy and changes the course of the tale. The music of cougar party plays alongside the trip.
The feature was a community effort made on a very limited budget of $750.00. The video was shot on evenings and weekends in Toronto and on the road to Sudbury during the fall of 2006. The main actors are Matt Thomas (Adam/Quickboy), Richard Fourhier (Dave/Strongman) and Paris Cameron-Gardos (King Kipling) each in their first major roles. Sholem Krishtalka executes all the illustrations.
Peter will be present at the screening on the 22nd. He is in Fredericton for the installation and opening of his exhibition 100 Stories About My Grandmother, organized by Gallery Connexion and hosted by the Beaverbrook Art Gallery in their lower level gallery space. For more information on the exhibition, opening, and Peter’s video workshop visit www.galleryconnexion.ca

FREDERICTON - MONDAY NIGHT FILM SERIES!
OUTSOURCED
January 19 , 8pm at Tilley Hall, UNB Campus
Director: John Jeffcoat
Cast: Josh Hamilton, Ayesha
Dharker, Asif Basra, Matt Smith,
Larry Pine
Run Time: 98 minutes
Country: USA
Year: 2008
Language: English
Distributor: Vagrant Films
A note-perfect comedy, Outsourced follows a Seattle call-centre
manager who discovers life and love in India when he’s “outsourced.” Inspired by director John Jeffcoat’s semester abroad in Southern Asia, Outsourced captures with great generosity and wit the comic magic of an American out of his element. Thirty-two-year-old Todd Anderson (Josh Hamilton) manages
Western Novelty’s order-filling call centre. “We sell kitsch to rednecks,” he explains, with typical efficiency.
Told by boss Dave (Matt Smith) that his entire department is abruptly being outsourced to India, Todd staves off unemployment by accepting a contract to travel there and train his replacement. Outsourced has good fun early on with Todd’s introduction to
Indian hospitality, marked by endless cups of sweet tea and polite inquiries of “What is your good name, please?”
But the film is far too astute and charming to rest on stereotypes.
When Todd lands at his company’s half-built office in Mumbai, he meets young Indians mystified by Americans’ desire to buy such products as Burger Branders and plastic Cheeseheads. Through the business skill, sincere friendship and eventual love of employee Asha (Ayesha Dharker), Todd learns to embrace his new surroundings and marshal the available forces to get the job done.
Outsourcing has become an all-too-familiar phenomenon, and there are a million ways to get this story wrong, but the combination of a smart script, agile direction and winning performances make Outsourced a guaranteed hit.
“This unaffected charmer treats a hot-button contemporary issue
with old-fashioned grace and benevolent wit, rendering it a
sure-fire word-of-mouth crowd-pleaser”
– Eddie Cockrell,
Variety

FREDERICTON - GALLERY CONNEXION PRESENTS:
100 Stories About My Grandmother
Peter Kingstone
January 24 to March 7, 2009 at the Beaverbrook Art Gallery, 703 Queen Street, Fredericton NB
Opening Reception on Saturday, Jan. 24 from 5 to 7pm
Gallery Connexion is very pleased to present new work by Toronto-based artist Peter Kingstone. Kingstone works with video and photography, often experimenting with narrative strategy to explore ideas of personal history and the intangible nature of truth. Opening the New Year is his documentary work 100 Stories About My Grandmother, a four channel video installation weaving together portraits of male sex trade workers telling stories about their grandmothers. Sharing family stories may seem banal, but inviting sex trade workers to do so becomes a way of including them in a society all to frequently eager to reject them. Audiences are invited to spend time lounging and listening to the thoughts and memories of an often marginalized community, allowing the talked-about to talk, giving a voice to those who have been voiceless.
The Beaverbrook Art Gallery has graciously agreed to host 100 Stories About My Grandmother in their lower level gallery space at 703 Queen Street, Fredericton NB.
ABOUT THE ARTIST- Kingstone holds a Philosophy/Cultural Studies Degree from Trent University in Peterborough, Ontario, and Masters of Fine Arts from York University, Toronto, Ontario. His work has been shown across Canada and throughout the United States- most recently 100 Stories About My Grandmother in 2008 at Gallery TPW in Toronto, Ontario. He won the Untitled Artist Award in 2005 for his installation The Strange Case of Peter K. (1974-2004). And in 2007 was the recipient of a Toronto Arts Council Level 2 Media Arts Grant and an Ontario Arts Council Media Arts Council Mid-Career and Established Grant.

FREDERICTON - LOCATIONS NEEDED
Hey everyone!
We're back and better than ever with Chris Fulton's short film Manic Chiropractic. We can't wait to get this project up and running but we need your help. We're looking for two of our key locations for the film. Cheap to rent or free would be ideal. We're looking to shoot the last weekend in April, first weekend in May, but we can be flexible if need be. Here's what we're looking for.
Chiropractor's Office - Looking for an approximately 20' x 20' reception area (enough room for a small film crew). The main feature required is a reception desk, with a few waiting-room chairs a nice bonus. The main reception area should lead to a back office for patient treatment. We aren't looking for a super-fancy set-up; this is supposed to be a family-run business. We can dress the set if necessary. An exterior entrance from a parking-lot would be ideal.
Lawyer's Office - Again, approximately 20' x 20', would be ideal, though we could go quite smaller. This office should be fairly plain - desk and a few chairs, a book-shelf, etc. We would prefer an internal office within a larger office-building (as we'd like to take some footage in the hallway outside the office door), but would also be interested in an exterior entrance as well. A home-office may also be usable, if it is somewhat separate from the other living-areas.
If you have any information about either of these locations, please send the information to Brit, the production manager, at britsparrow@gmail.com . All leads would be appreciated.
Thanks!
Chris Fulton and the Manic Chiropractic team
