Spotlight!

End of the Line COMBINES COLD WITH COMEDY

“End of the Line” is a dark comedy about small town outdoorsman, Butch Comeau, who tries to get a head start on a local ice fishing tournament, by heading out onto the lake after a night of drinking at the town legion. This foolhardy idea sends him crashing at high speed into a pedestrian trying to walk across the ice.

This project will, in many ways, be an experiment for Film Co-op member filmmaker Michel Guitard. He plans to explore cadence, distance and time by interweaving a custom made soundtrack, with a cut for cut, pre-planned shot list. With the help of other co-op members on his crew, as well as his Musical Producer, Bruce LeGrow, he wants to create a soundtrack based on this overriding theme, before ever rolling the camera.

Cadence, or timing, will be explored throughout the script and accentuated with musical tempo. It is because of timing that Butch has been able to get away with his crime, and this theme of non-accountability is central to why the film can be considered comical, while still containing rather harsh visuals. Distance will be presented with a little help from nature. Michel will be shooting the film on Grand- Lake, NB's largest inland body of water, where he grew up. The landscape of the location provides for kilometers of open ice in all directions.

The cinematography hopes to heighten the sense of wide open spaces by having panoramic shots representing helplessness and struggle versus close confining shots during the mutilation scenes intended to make the audience extremely uncomfortable.

Time is the main theme of this specific project. Actions and events move the story forward, not dialogue or voiceover. This is why Michel felt that it was so crucial to pre-plan the soundtrack with the shot list. Everything seen and heard will have a very “set in stone” feel about it. It is this inevitability, this unstoppable inertia about time that will be apparent in the finished film, and, ultimately represents the major theme of Butch using the unstoppable force of time to his advantage.

JUMPSTARTING AND FAST TRACKING

Jason Nicholson Leads On

By Jim Lavoie

In everyone’s life clarity of vision/direction, when acted upon, is a force that may well change one’s life path dramatically. An optimist believes that this is so while the pessimist doubts its very existence. In the case of emerging filmmaker/actor Jason Nicholson it may well be a special calling that had to be answered. How else can one explain his creative climb in just nine months? As a newcomer in film he recently became one of the leads in the low budget feature film Plaster Rock (Global Universal Pictures Inc.); which was shot in Riley Brook, New Brunswick this past December.

Nicholson who hails from Nash Creek, NB attended Dalhousie University. He has completed 2 years of a BAA degree that he wants to change to Anthropology now to further his studies with the goal of obtaining a PHD down the road. His reason for the educational change is his true fascination with people.

“I always wanted to be in films. I had a teacher in High School who I admire tell me to go for it. But, due to a lack of confidence at the time, I didn't pursue it. It was last March 2009 that I woke up one day and told myself that I was going to live my dream. It was the right decision to make,” said Nicholson.

“Acting is something I love and Plaster Rock was a great way to break the ice. I am grateful that Director Jackie Giroux gave me my first lead role and also grateful to Producers Giroux and Ben Martin for the script they wrote,” says Nicholson. “I am grateful to Michael Masucci for giving me my first IMDB credit on American Sunset and then coaching me on the set of Plaster Rock . The crew and cast of Plaster Rock were fantastic...Click here for full article

NFB Hothouse 6: Call for Submissions

Deadline: February 19, 2010

Program Dates: April 05 – June 25, 2010
Theme: Inside Out

Tell it in a minute. Do it in 3 months. Make it Stereoscopic 3D.
The National Film Board of Canada seeks submissions from emerging filmmakers (young and not-so-young), and artists intrigued by animation art, for the 6th edition of Hothouse, a 12-week paid apprenticeship in full-on, all-inclusive, real-world animation filmmaking.

A new dimension this year -- and a giant experiment -- Hothouse 6 will be produced in stereoscopic 3D!. No need to dust off your red and blue glasses or script elaborate face-poking scenes; this is about using space as an essential story device and expressive tool (intimacy, fantasy, paradox, etc).

Hothouse is about making animation faster and more flexibly, embracing animation’s many possibilities while maintaining creative and technical excellence. We’re looking for six new talents who are willing and able to jump head-first into this intensive, immersive experience.
