CONDOLENCES

On behalf of the Film Co-op staff, board and  members, I send our condolences to Tony Whalen who lost his father to recently. Our thoughts and prayers are with him, Gia, Viv and his family at this very difficult time.

BACK TO SCHOOL FOR JIM!

I am going back to school this weekend (insert snide remarks here, like I hope it is for grammar or grandpa). I will be attending a New Brunswick Film Co-op workshop being held this weekend under the tutorage of SWFF award winning filmmaker Chris Fulton. As you may have noted in past e-news, If, as a Co-op member you wish to use Co-op Resources and Co-op Equipment to shoot your own projects in the future, then this course on Directing is one of five prerequisites to doing so. The others being Screenwriting, Digital Camera & Lighting, Production Management & One Editing workshop.

Who said you can't teach an old dog new tricks! I'll be there with bells on. If you are interested  in the required workshops, you know the drill, contact Cat at info@nbfilmcoop.com

Space is limited for all workshops and Directing and Final Cut Pro - HD are now full, so move it!

A DARK RADIUS

In the teaser category, and who doesn't love a tease now and then, I received word from Tony Whalen asking to check out the trailer for A Dark Radius which is Gia and Tony's CBC 3-2-1 award winning short film currently in post-production. Directed by Gia Milani and Produced by Tony Whalen and Gia Milani, with Executive producer Nicholas Tabarrok and Cinematographer Gareth Roberts. The Music (Unholy Temple) for the trailer is by Jason Livesay licensed via ShockWave Sound.

Introducing the new NBFC Online Community.

This private social network will only be made available to NB Film Co-op members and will be administered by Cat with Chafic Haddad's technical expertise.

Here members will have access to several web services such posting photos, videos, website information and important information for shoots and past films. This resource will allow NB Film members to stay in the loop with projects on the go and will put a face to some of the names we read about in the weekly newsletter.

Why would you start ANOTHER social network if you already have facebook? Well the difference here is that this new network will focus only on members of the film co-op and can be used almost as the IMDB (Internet movie database) for the NB Filmmakers Co-op. Please take a minute to explore the new website @ http://nbfilmcoop.ning.com

The Film Co-op staff thanks Chafic Haddad for all his hard work creating the Film Co-op network and getting the Film Co-op involved in Twitter!

Kudos to ?Film Co-op member Chris Giles who had his experimental film Cliffe Street spotlighted in the Antimatter Film Festival in Victoria, BC.

Cliffe Street is a film based on the last days of an apartment's life. It introduces three inhabitants before melting into a stroboscopic party and fireworks. Throughout the film, an omnipresent bulldozer arm rips at the house. Fireworks engulf the building and the final strokes of the bulldozer collapse it. CG

FREDERICTON - MONDAY NIGHT FILM SERIES!

HAPPY GO LUCKY

February 2, 8pm at Tilley Hall, UNB Campus

Director: Mike Leigh
Cast: Sally Hawkins, Alexis Zegerman, Eddie Marsan
Run Time: 118 minutes
Country: United Kingdom
Year: 2008
Language: English

Mike Leigh (Topsy-Turvy), often a highly political filmmaker,
returns to his comedic roots in the delightful Happy-Go-Lucky,
which had its premiere at the 2008 Toronto International Film
Festival®.

This latest work is a distinct change of pace after his critically acclaimed 2004 film Vera Drake, and it shows the sheer versatility of one of the cinema’s master filmmakers. Blessed with a vibrant ensemble cast, innovative photography (by frequent Leigh collaborator Dick Pope), deft direction and a genuinely witty script, Happy-Go-Lucky is a vastly appealing comedy about life, love and knowing how to have fun.

Poppy (Sally Hawkins, well regarded for her small roles in
Vera Drake and All or Nothing) is a flamboyant, free-spirited
elementary school teacher. As she rides her bicycle through the
streets of central London, she smiles and waves at acquaintances and strangers alike; she’s constantly taken with life. After her beloved bicycle is stolen, Poppy decides to take driving lessons
from the Axle “good driving is no accident” School of Motoring.
There she meets Scott (Eddie Marsan, The Illusionist, Me
and Orson Welles), her hypersensitive driving instructor. As she continues to see Scott for lessons, he becomes increasingly irritated yet equally infatuated by her bubbly, laissez-faire attitude, at one point angrily accusing her of being a flirt. Soon after, Poppy also meets Tim, a social worker from the school system who, by contrast, fully appreciates her effervescent attitude.

Leigh and his cast have fun exploring the ins and outs of this classic romantic scenario. The extroverted Poppy and introverted
Scott are seemingly like fire and water, constantly at each other’s throats. And then there is Tim, the other corner of the triangle. Who will win out? There is a part of Poppy in each of us, urging us to laugh out loud, even during many of life’s terribly unfunny moments. Leigh’s good-natured comic spirit successfully steers us through Happy-Go-Lucky’s light and dark moments, shaping Poppy into one of his most memorable creations.

“Happy-Go-Lucky is as funny, serious, life-affirming and
beautifully performed as anything Leigh has done….”

FREDERICTON  @theplayhouse MOVE! Series presents Toronto Dance Theatre

Friday, February 13, 2009 at 8 PM

A dance for the twenty-first century, Christopher House’s Timecode Break is about time, presence and the ephemeral beauty of the body. Choreographed simultaneously for stage and screen, it integrates razor-sharp dancing with gorgeous video images to create a brave new kinetic landscape. Timecode Break is intertwines dance and video by incorporating a compelling video design by Nico Stagias (http://www.stagias.com/). “Split screens allows Stagias to isolate just part of an arm or a leg, or put one movement in a loop. There are also full and partial head shots of the dancers interpolated with their movement to give a burst of humanity to the abstraction” (except of Globe and Mail review by Paula Citron, June 6, 2006).

Yours to discover, this ultra modern stage production will open your eyes to a whole new avenue of dance.

The performance is also part of the In Conversation series which gives patrons a chance to talk with the choreographer Christopher House following the show. In Conversation takes place at the Beaverbrook Art Gallery and includes complimentary glass of wine and sweets. Tickets are complimentary but need to be requested from the box office: http://www.theplayhouse.ca/event_detail_conversation.aspx?ID=58

Theatre UNB Presents Carthaginians by Frank McGuinness, Jan. 28-31

---------------------------------------------------------------

FREDERICTON - NOTABLE ACTS
One of the most powerful, moving, and extraordinary plays to come out of Ireland in recent decades will be performed at UNB this month when Frank McGuinness' Carthaginians takes the stage at Memorial Hall January 28-31.

The play is set against the backdrop of the "Troubles" in Northern Ireland, the three decade-long sectarian conflict between Catholics and Protestants that claimed thousands of lives between the late 1960s and the late 1990s.

McGuinness' play is set more than a decade after Bloody Sunday in a Catholic graveyard in Derry. A group of men and women have gathered there, believing the dead souls buried there are about to rise. As they keep their vigil, the characters, all outsiders and outcasts whose lives have been touched either directly or indirectly by the violence of Bloody Sunday, tell jokes, share stories, and come together to perform a play called "The Burning Balaclava" that is a hilarious send up of the Troubles.

Performed by students in UNB's senior acting class.

Carthaginians runs Wednesday January 28 through Saturday January 31 at 8 PM, with tickets ($10, $6 for students) available at the door. Patrons are advised that the play contains mature language and subject matter. For further information, call 455-5609
or email lfalken@unb.ca
