MEMBER UPDATES MEMBER UPDATES
Just renewed Co-op member for 2010, Dennis Poirier, is looking forward to another busy year at the NB Filmmaker’s Co-op. His aging yet strong body still has a few kicks in the can left for crew work, but Dennis will continue to expand his knowledge for acting and script writing, his strongest passions in the process of filmmaking. Dennis will continue to mentor the next generation of filmmakers in the pre-production phase with proposal writing, and fair script editing that meets your available resources without compromising your idea.
With an excellent rapport with young adults, Dennis will pursue his lifelong dream to become an English teacher, and will enroll at UNB as a mature student in 2010.
Recently, Dennis got a taste of commercial paid work as a grip on “Plaster Rock”, a feature horror film shot entirely on location in northern NB. The old quiet silver haired actor hopped on for a chance to see how the commercial lot do it. To his surprise, it was oddly familiar. Wayne Duplesea, a fellow grip on the shoot, talked about “déjà vu.” ”Many times, I felt like I had already done this” Dennis said. “Its déjà vu when you dream of these moments and then they happen” explained Wayne.
On the ten day shoot, everyone worked extremely hard, in harsh weather conditions, but at the end of the day everyone got together at the main lodge. It was a family atmosphere; grips drank beers with the makeup girls, actors and actresses, art department and camera crew. As many well trained film co-op members were on the shoot, everyone was well aware of set etiquette, or at least where the boundaries are located. That never stopped Dennis from teasing actor Jessica Holt when gobs of fake blood were applied to her face and costume. “Payback is a b*tch,” he said with a smile, reminiscing how she literally threw buckets of a recipe of fake blood over his head in Blood Shed. At that point, Dennis only thought actors who are just starting out made sacrifices to make a name for themselves, but when Frank Molina climbed into a seven-foot long coffin- like freezer, and Eric Leffler got buried in snow up to his neck, he learned that the “sacrifices” never end to capture a moment. He also learned an important acting lesson from Lalesha Stewart. There was a scene that required a lot of prep between takes, and Lalesha never broke character.
It was also his first chance to meet many more new people. The very talented Christine Johnson from Moncton, Michael Masucci, (the very same who directed “American Sunset”, as an actor in “Plaster Rock”) Pete Harding, the hardest working man on set, who kept Dennis going with his antics and “darts” (cigarettes) Conor Doyle, who he'd only met once previously as Gravel Chewers’ frontman, was location sound. Richard Matheson was continuity but preformed many AD tasks like waking the actors for breakfast. Oh yeah, there were no ADs. How can you shoot a feature without an AD? Well, director Jackie Giroux’s tremendous experience prevailed and she took on a very key leadership role. Every department waited for her instructions and everyone did their job, period. Dennis is willing to bet having so much control over the whole production was a refreshing experience, rather than stuffy meetings behind closed doors, as big budget features usually do. Problems were talked about and quickly resolved on set.
The usual crew suspects were onboard: Chris Giles was camera assist to Jesse Anthony, the DOP. Both guys are super awesome to work with on Film Co-op shoots and this time was no different. Chris’ knowledge and talent was so indispensable, it earned him the nickname: Stud Muffin. Andrew Long was THE art department. He created all the special effects with sometimes little notice, due to the unpredictable December weather. The crew had to keep a quick shooting pace to complete the shooting before Christmas.
The man who made it possible: Ben Martin. As a producer he was an approachable figure, told stories that should never be repeated in the newsletter, and did cigarettes runs for the crew who couldn’t step off set. Name a producer or employer who will do that for you.
With Plaster Rock now behind him, Dennis can’t just chalk it up as another experience. To Dennis, it was his most unforgettable film experience since working on the low budget short film Blood Shed.
