Peter de Niverville is a freelance writer, publisher and neophyte animator.
"For the last six months, I have been concentrating on creating new short animations to post on my Youtube page: http://ca.youtube.com/user/buckwheatpete
Subjects range from animated optical illusions to "one panel" gag-type cartoons such as : "Michael Phelps:Secret Revealed!"; "Divide and Conquer: How Cellphones took over the World"; and "While Waiting for the Museum to Open", which features a self-portrait of Vincent Van Gogh blowing bubblegum.
However, my two most popular animations are "Mr. Froggie meets the Huli Wigfrogs", which is a take off on the popular Matt Harding dance videos; and, "Why is Mr. Froggie Green?", an animated riddle.? What I find interesting is that, according to my Youtube statistics, the country where these two videos are most popular is Poland.? Globalization, eh!

Amy has been a fan of films since before she can recall. Growing up, she use to watch horror and thriller films with her father (much to her mother's dismay), and this in turn has sparked her fascination and love of all types of films (especially horror and dramas!)
Through school, she took a lot of media classes, and today Amy is graduating from the Centre for Arts and Technology in Fredericton NB, with her degree in Digital Filmmaking. She's done work both in and outside of the classroom; everything from volunteer work for Rogers Television, to paid gigs offered to her through her network of contacts. She's even had the pleasure of working alongside people such as 1st AD Stewart Young, and Actor Billy Zane in the shot-for-TV film called Blue Seduction.
Even as a fresh filmmaker straight out of college, Amy is well on her way to building up her career as a filmmaker, and eagerly welcomes any and all opportunities to be part of new projects in the film community! She is currently assisting director and Film Co-op membwer Jonathan Collicott with his documentary entitled, "The Light's of St. Mary's".

PETER EVANCHUCK
I'm now location scouting/researching in NB & NS for a documentary on the Ukrainian enslavement/imprisonment during WW1 in Canada
This is the firs time in Canada that the 'war measures act' was enforced to declare 180,000 Canadian/Ukrainians as 'enemy aliens' due to the fact they came from the Austro/Hugarian empire. All were placed under forced arrest their papers taken and they had to report to a parol officer, many had their possessions confiscated, thousands were sent into the Canadian wilderness to build their own concentration camps, thousands of others were farmed out as slave labour.
These Ukrainian Canadian 'SLAVES' were sent to work in places like the MINTO coal and steel company, others build Banff and Jasper, other Uke slaves were sent to Sydney to work the mines and create the tar ponds! The last living survivor died recently who was a baby at the time when she and her parents were sent into northern Quebec at Spirit Lake where the Ukrainians prisoners were forced to build their own concentration camp/'gulag'. Various governments including the present one has stated this illegal and unjust enslavement, removal of property (that still hasn't been returned or compensated to living relatives), etc would be recognized by the Canadian government and compensation of some sort given but so far it's only words that mean nothing but air and hollow promises.
I'm hoping this documentary will have some effect to alter that.
Also I'm working on a dramatic script encompassing the same story using that last surviving child as a lead into the fuller story.
If anyone who reads this has any information please contact me: pevanchuck@hotmail.com

SPECIAL EVENTS COMING UP AT THE NBFC IN JANUARY
FREDERICTON - SPECIAL NB FILM CO-OP SCREENING EVENT AT DOODLES CAFE
WHAT: The Cloud of Unknowing (feature film)
When: Saturday, Jan. 17, 2009 at 7pm sharp!
Where: Doodles Café in the Charlotte Street Art Centre at 732 Charlotte Street, Fredericton NB
Free of charge, all welcome.
The Cloud of Unkowing is my first feature film. It was made at the beginning of the DV revolution that shook the film world. Much of my work borders on the edges of narration. With a background in photography I can't help but sense the inherent narrative within a still image. I took a photograph of an older French gentleman walking with a young Japanese woman and that's where the story of the film was initiated.
Although I knew these people the image itself was haunting and made me think of, believe it or not, Romeo and Juliet. I thought "What if Romeo lived and twenty years later saw someone he thought was Juliet as a twenty year old. What would he feel? Joy? Grief? Guilt?" The resulting film is a departure from that original impetus but still carries within it the guilt I associate with what I believe would have been Romeo's feelings. At the time of the making of the film I was fascinated by the aesthetic of a restrained elegance and logic that can be found in the artworks of China and Japan.
Although I wrote the story and find it uniquely western in its relation to materialism and guilt it is nevertheless overarched by this Asian quality of restraint.
One reviewer Maitland McDonagh, was most perceptive in her remarks about the film which I quote here: "Richard Sylvarnes' first feature is a delicate watercolor dream of a ghost story, as unsubstantial and tremulously haunting as an unquiet spirit." I find that a very apt sentence. The Cloud Of Unknowing is closer to a small precious watercolor than to a giant expressionist canvas.
Artist Biography
Sylvarnes is a filmmaker and photographer whose work has been shown at national and international venues. He was recently nominated for a Rockefeller Renew Media Fellowship and as an interdisciplinary artist in conjuncition with choreographer David Neumann received a grant from Creative Capital for their upcoming project Big Eater. His second feature length film H.C.E. premiered as an official selection at the 5th Tribeca Film Festival. Its experimental nature calls to mind the birth of cinema, carny shows, tableaux photography, and flip books as the film tells a dream of western history. His most recent credit is directing Bate Papo Em Nova Iorque for Brazilian television. His first feature length film The Cloud Of Unknowing premiered at the inaugural Tribeca Film Festival in 2002 continuing on in festivals throughout Asia and Europe and was released by Possible Films in 2004. His latest works are Imperial Animal which showed at the Chelsea Art Museum in New York, Landscape After The Battle commissioned by Matador Records for the band Interpol, and Siberia for fashion designer Miho Miho.

GALLERY CONNEXION AND THE NB FILM CO-OP PRESENTS:
The Astounding Adventures of Strongman and Quickboy
By Peter Kingstone
When: Thursday, Jan. 22, 2009 at 7pm sharp!
Where: Doodles Café in the Charlotte Street Art Centre at 732 Charlotte Street, Fredericton NB
Cost: By donation
Join us in the intimate setting of Doodles Café at the Charlotte Street Art Centre to view The Astounding Adventures of Strongman and Quickboy, the first feature length video by Toronto artist Peter Kingstone.
The Astounding Adventures of Strongman and Quick Boy is a narrative about disease, death, love getting older, and sex. Dave and Adam have a meager existence as prostitutes in Toronto, when Dave receives a call from a friend in Sudbury. They must rush off in hopes of saving her. Adam spends most of his time writing comic books and is retelling his story as Strongman and Quickboy, as they fly of to Nebulon 5 to battle Xenon and save Princess Ariana. He has also brought along his video camera to capture the action. These two narratives coexist along the road, till they meet King Kipling, who crystallizes their concerns through pop philosophy and changes the course of the tale. The music of cougar party plays alongside the trip.
The feature was a community effort made on a very limited budget of $750.00. The video was shot on evenings and weekends in Toronto and on the road to Sudbury during the fall of 2006. The main actors are Matt Thomas (Adam/Quickboy), Richard Fourhier (Dave/Strongman) and Paris Cameron-Gardos (King Kipling) each in their first major roles. Sholem Krishtalka executes all the illustrations.
Peter will be present at the screening on the 22nd. He is in Fredericton for the installation and opening of his exhibition 100 Stories About My Grandmother, organized by Gallery Connexion and hosted by the Beaverbrook Art Gallery in their lower level gallery space. As Scene From Here
By Jim Lavoie
Last week I threw out an idea for beating the Winter Blahs which, by response or lack of, has been replaced by an idea I think will be fun. The reasons are twofold: first I don't have to do any work and secondly all the infrastructure is already in place.
Are you ready Freddy, because starting next Friday, January 16th, let's raise our voices in harmony, er forget that, well raise them anyway at the Musiplex where they are launching a once a month Big Karaoke night . A night for those who dare to get up on the big "BUD" stage and strut their stuff and oh yeah sing!
Karaoke is fun, lots of laughs. There is a bar and it's a big place with lots of room to gather any film co-op troops. Let's give this a try for this month anyway and maybe next month we will go back or try something different like full contact curling!
Hey, it's not a contest but, someone from our group just may walk off with $100 for being picked as the top singer for that night The Karaoke starts at 9 pm but warm up, drinking that is, starts at 8 pm.
The Musiplex (North Side), located at 15 Cityview Avenue, behind Home Hardware and Tim Horton's off Main Street. The Telephone: 506-450-8786 or Wendy at wendy@musiplex.com

FREDERICTON - MONDAY NIGHT FILM SERIES!
TELL NO ONE
January 12 , 8pm at Tilley Hall, UNB Campus
Director: Guillaume Canet
Cast: François Cluzet, Marie-Josée Croze and Kristin Scott Thomas
Run Time: 125 minutes
Country: France
Year: 2008
Language: English
Distributor: Music Box Films
An unusual example of a best-selling American thriller adapted for the French screen, Tell No One is a thoroughly absorbing whodunit with more twists and switchbacks than the Le Mans racecourse.
Popular French actor-turned-director Guillaume Canet has taken a page-turner by Harlan Coben set in the U.S. and transposed both the story and the movie genre to France, heightening the artistry without sacrificing the thriller elements.
Tell No One proceeds in short, vivid, now-you-see-them-now-you-don't scenes that make the cinematic equivalent of a jigsaw puzzle. The technique adds to the suspense by throwing the viewer off the scent, and contributing to a sense that we might be watching the work of an untrustworthy narrator.
Dr. Alexandre Beck (prolific French actor François Cluzet, a Humphrey Bogart for our times) is an inner-city pediatrician whose wife was murdered after both go for a midnight swim in a lake at the place where they played as childhood sweethearts.
Even in death, Margot (Quebec actor Marie-Josée Croze from The Diving Bell and the Butterfly) remains the love of his life. Beck was initially a suspect, but was cleared and a notorious serial killer was blamed for Margot's death.
But now, eight years later, two things happen. A pair of unidentified bodies have been found near the scene of Margot's murder and police reopen the case. The unexplained circumstance in Beck's story is how he managed to get out of the water after being knocked unconscious as he ran toward Margot's cries.
Then Beck receives an email with a link to a surveillance camera and a specific time to watch. The message warns: tell no one; trust no one. Is the woman he sees at the appointed hour actually his wife?
Beck's guilt or innocence is at issue throughout the film. If he's innocent, why is he running from police? Cluzet has a look that could work as either criminal or victim.
Bruno (Gilles Lellouche), a gang member who comes to Beck's assistance after the pediatrician has helped save his son's life, leads Beck's pursuers on a merry chase that includes a heart-stopping sequence on a six-lane freeway.
Canet himself makes a cameo appearance as Philippe Neuville, another alleged murder victim and son of the powerful and wealthy Gilbert Neuville (Jean Rochefort). A horse-owning family, they are tied to Beck through his sister Ann, a show jumper.
Crossing social lines from upper-class privilege to gangland underground to French middle-class family life, Tell No One is a suspense invention told in purely naturalistic terms.
Soundtrack choices such as U2's "With or Without You" and Otis Redding's "For Your Precious Love" contribute to a discombobulation that place this thriller in a realm of its own: a love story, a detective story, a family saga and a social commentary all at once.
Tell No One is not one of those mysteries that can never be unravelled or that defies logic. Yet, so cleverly are the pieces of the puzzle put together that one's immediate desire on reaching the end is to watch the whole thing again.

FREDERICTON - GALLERY CONNEXION PRESENTS:
100 Stories About My Grandmother
Peter Kingstone
January 24 to March 7, 2009 at the Beaverbrook Art Gallery, 703 Queen Street, Fredericton NB
Opening Reception on Saturday, Jan. 24 from 5 to 7pm
Gallery Connexion is very pleased to present new work by Toronto-based artist Peter Kingstone. Kingstone works with video and photography, often experimenting with narrative strategy to explore ideas of personal history and the intangible nature of truth. Opening the New Year is his documentary work 100 Stories About My Grandmother, a four channel video installation weaving together portraits of male sex trade workers telling stories about their grandmothers. Sharing family stories may seem banal, but inviting sex trade workers to do so becomes a way of including them in a society all to frequently eager to reject them. Audiences are invited to spend time lounging and listening to the thoughts and memories of an often marginalized community, allowing the talked-about to talk, giving a voice to those who have been voiceless.
The Beaverbrook Art Gallery has graciously agreed to host 100 Stories About My Grandmother in their lower level gallery space at 703 Queen Street, Fredericton NB.
ABOUT THE ARTIST- Kingstone holds a Philosophy/Cultural Studies Degree from Trent University in Peterborough, Ontario, and Masters of Fine Arts from York University, Toronto, Ontario. His work has been shown across Canada and throughout the United States- most recently 100 Stories About My Grandmother in 2008 at Gallery TPW in Toronto, Ontario. He won the Untitled Artist Award in 2005 for his installation The Strange Case of Peter K. (1974-2004). And in 2007 was the recipient of a Toronto Arts Council Level 2 Media Arts Grant and an Ontario Arts Council Media Arts Council Mid-Career and Established Grant.
