31 YEARS LATER: NB FILM CO-OP:
YOU'VE COME A LONG WAY BABY!

Spotlight
GETTING INVOLVED - IT'S EASY AS 1-2-3
You are a brand spanking new NB Film Co-op member and you are leaving the Co-op offices and in your hot little hands are your new membership card (it's still warm from the laminator) and the receipt for your membership fee. What now?
It's true that Cat, intrepid membership services gal, did bend your ear for a time about volunteer activities and what you could do, geez can she talk and why is she so happy all the time, weird! It's all so overwhelming you think as you trudge home with visions of workshops, socials, productions and why is Cat so excited about an interactive calendar?
Where do you go from here?
THE STEPS
Email Cat a profile and bio when you first join and an updated bio and picture when you renew each year after
- This is extremely important as the bio and picture introduces you to everybody on the Film Co-op listserv and the listserv is huge. The weekly e-news goes out to not only the Film Co-op members (250 province wide) but the following groups: NB schools, NB universities, NB film/video/animation/audio training centres, NB commercial producers, screenwriters and tech people, NB granting agencies, other NB artist-run centres in different creative disciplines, Canadian training centres for film and video, 99 centres similar to the Film Co-op in Canada, specific Canadian filmmakers, producers and tech people, film and actor unions in Canada, NB and Canadian casting directors, actors, community colleges, city halls, etc..etc...the list goes on and on.
Remember to keep in touch with the Film Co-op full time core staff
- Members should always feel free to email Cat if they have questions or concerns about anything. Cat is quick on email and really enjoys helping out. Don't be shy, email her anytime day or night and she will likely answer you right away if she can, she's weird that way. If you have questions for Tony or Michel, she can help out as well.
Email Cat to set up times to come in to help out in the office
- Members that live in town can do different things to help out in different ways. Cleaning up the offices, typing up articles, website corrections, scanning and sizing pictures, helping with socials, running errands, cleaning up the resources centre, dusting, organizing etc...all this is a huge help to staff. Volunteers are pure gold.
Email Cat if you want to to take out videos and films produced by other Co-op members
- This is very important as watching what the other members have created gives you insight into what is possible for you to do creatively and through the Co-op. You can also get an idea of member's work whether they are directors, cinematographers, screenwriters, production designers etc...possible crew for your future projects. Also, it's important to be up on what your creative peers are doing at all times.
Email Cat to plan impromptu events/meetings/socials and find out who needs help on their productions where ever you live in NB.
- The Film Co-op can always use a hand with socials and events happening locally or in other parts of the province and it's sometimes nice for newer members to help out to give the alumni members a break if they are the ones that always have to do this. It's a great way for a newer member to get really involved and get to know staff and members so much better. It's important for everybody to share the work load of volunteer labour so that a few don't get extreme burn out. No matter where you live, there are productions and events going on, get involved.
There are also Silver Wave Film Festival activities and work that goes on all year long that the Film Co-op needs help with, ask anytime.
Email Cat if you joined and are not getting the weekly e-news
- The weekly e-news is the creative bible for the NB Film Co-op and the larger community as it really tries to keep people in the loop on what is going on in film and television in NB and beyond. It is so important to read the e-news once a week when it goes out as it keeps everybody connected. It is also important for members and non-members to send Cat updates on what is going on in the cinematic arts in their areas in NB.
As well, there are two Co-op facebook pages and it's good to be a member of at least one of them:
New Brunswick Filmmakers' Co-operative: The Official Site
and
Silver Wave Film Festival
.
Email Cat if you want to register and pay for workshops as they fill up quickly
- The workshops really get the creative juices going for everybody. Going to workshops also helps members and non-members alike to network with other likeminded creative people in NB. Nobody is beyond taking workshops to strength their creative skills, nobody, nobody knows it all or has nothing to learn at any stage. Workshops can be refreshers for more experienced people as well.
END NOTE
Ok, so you have done some of the above but you have not landed on a member production as of yet and you are really keen to get your hands dirty and get some production action. You can't handle equipment until you are trained (let's say that you are a complete greenhorn), and have gotten in your volunteer hours, so, is that possible? Yes it is. Any new associate or full member can volunteer on a member shoot in a non-technical role . There are more non-technical roles on a shoot so, there is plenty of room for new members and older members alike to assist.
The interactive calendar is great as it tells each member what films are being shot on specific dates, who the filmmaker is and there is short description of the project. New members are welcome to contact any filmmaker listed in the calendar but ultimately it is up to the filmmaker who works on their shoot.
If you are a little shy about contacting a filmmaker or two, ask Cat and she will help you out.
You will find the calendar on the Film Co-op homepage and in each weekly e-news.
There is so much activity at the Film Co-op now that it's quite easy to find something to do. Please take the time to get involved and help out. Take that step into the Co-op spotlight and get into the action!

FREDERICTON -
Bard in the Barracks presents Macbeth in Odell Park
Bard in the Barracks presents Macbeth in Odell Park, June 23-July 4
Bard in the Barracks is returning to Odell Park this year for its fifth anniversary production of Shakespeare’s classic tragedy Macbeth.
Building on the success of the company’s 2009 production of A Midsummer Night’s Dream, which wowed audiences with a staging that moved between a number of spectacular locations in the park, Macbeth will unfold at fourteen different sites in Odell Park, with the audience led from scene to scene. As night descends and the witching hour approaches, Bard in the Barracks will thrill with supernatural doings and ghostly visitations, live music, epic battle scenes, and all the horror and pathos of Shakespeare’s most stirring tragedy, all happening within inches of audience members.
Macbeth will run from Wednesday, June 23 through Sunday, July 4 (except no show June 28), with performances at 7:30 PM nightly; audience members should arrive at the park (Rookwood Avenue entrance) by 7:15 to allow time to make it to play start point (early arrival recommended to guarantee a seat). Patrons should dress for the weather; sturdy walking shoes and a blanket or camp stool to sit on recommended.
Tickets ($13; $10 Student/Senior; under 12 free; 2 for 1 June 29) available at the door or in advance at the Lighthouse on the Green. Performance will proceed in light rain; cancelled in case of heavy rain at show time, with tickets honored for subsequent performances. For full show details visit

Saint John 225 Master Class series launches with
award-winning playwright Jeffrey Hatcher
Saint John 225 Master Class series launches with award-winning playwright Jeffrey Hatcher Partnership with Saint John Theatre Company will bring Tuesdays With Morrie playwright for script development workshop in July
SAINT JOHN – Playwright Jeffrey Hatcher will be the first of six masters to participate in Saint John 225’s Master Class series, presented in partnership with the Saint John Theatre Company.
The Master Class series will enhance professional development of the arts in the Saint John region and is part of the Saint John 225 program of events. The City of Saint John, through Saint John 225, was designated a 2010 Cultural Capital of Canada by the Department of Canadian Heritage. This designation includes significant funding for a year-long program designed to enhance arts, culture and heritage in Saint John.
Hatcher, whose work includes the script adaptations of Mitch Albom’s memoir Tuesdays With Morrie and Robert Louis Stevenson’s Dr. Jekyll and Mr. Hyde, will conduct a script development master class with Saint John area playwrights July 2nd to 4th 2010.
“It was important that we launch the Master Class series with the best available teachers in their field. After several conversations, I knew that Jeffrey Hatcher would strike the right balance between the high professional standards and the educational and development needs of our playwrights in this region,” said Stephen Tobias, Artistic Director of the Saint John Theatre Company.
“The inclusion of Mr. Hatcher in our list of instructors, due to the certain celebrity status that he brings, would send a clear message that we are serious about theatre education.”
Master Class participants will be chosen through an application process. To qualify for the playwright master class, applicants must have an unpublished or unproduced original, one-act play that will be read and discussed as part of the master class. Applicants must submit a one-page letter indicating their theatre background and a brief description of the work that they will wish to bring to the master class. Please do not submit manuscripts.
The Master Classes are by invitation only. Successful applicants will be contacted by the Saint John Theatre Company. For further information on the Saint John 225 Master Class series and in particular the Jeffrey Hatcher Master Class, please contact Lise Driscoll at the Saint John Theatre Company at 506-652-7582 or stage@saintjohntheatrecompany.com
The Saint John Theatre Company began 20 years ago as an amateur theatre group created by friends who wanted to bring a little theatre to the city. Over the past two decades the Company has grown, both in terms of its membership and its reach. While it is still a volunteer-based organization, it has evolved into a true community theatre company, with a small but growing outreach component.

Hugh Hefner: Playboy, Activist and Rebel, by Oscar-winning™ director Brigitte Berman, premiered at the Toronto International Film Festival in 2009 and is due for national release August 6th.
The film takes an intimate look at the outspoken, flamboyant founder of the Playboy empire. When Hefner launched Playboy magazine in 1953, he became a champion of the sexual revolution and, immediately, the forces of Church and State initiated a war against him that raged over the decades.
Hefner is revealed both as a hedonistic playboy, but, more importantly, as the man who's been a groundbreaking advocate and catalyst for civil rights, the First Amendment, and human rights.
With humour and insight, the film captures Hefner's fierce battles with the government, the religious right, and militant feminists. Compelling interviews with a remarkable Who's Who of the decades, and rare footage, present a brilliant and entertaining snapshot of the life of an extraordinary man and the controversies that surrounded him.
The film highlights how in fighting his battles, Hefner was arrested for obscenity, branded a pornographer by Ronald Reagan's Meese Commission, endured a boycott of his magazine, was under FBI surveillance and was set up on a fabricated drug charge. He has won every legal battle he has ever fought. And of course his legendary lifestyle has continued unabated throughout.

ORIGINAL MUSIC FREE FOR FILM USAGE
My name is Gene Kondusky. I'm a dual American-Canadian citizen currently living in Montreal (about to move to Fredericton to start a PhD program). I've just completed a musical project under the name of Kites Overhead. It's mostly me, my guitars, and my computer, but sometimes friends drop in and sing a bit. My sources of inspiration are varied: you'll likely hear pieces of Sigur Rós and Mogwai just as readily as you'll hear Leonard Cohen or Neil Young.
I've decided to divide these recordings into two releases: an EP and a full-length album. The EP is a free digital release, called "In the Shadow of the Mountain." It contains two tracks from the album, as well as a cover of a song by The Magnetic Fields. It's being released through my own imprint, Home Is Not Here, and was made available online on March 31st.
The album is called You are a secret, and you must never tell it. It's recently been mastered, and, once album art is finalized, will likely be available on the website and in CD format sometime in the summer.
I believe that music should be made available to consumers at a price that they can live with. If that means free, then that's perfectly fine with me. I released the EP as a free download because I believe that the most important thing is to have people hear my music. Having said that, I'm still interested in recouping the expenses of recording. My principal strategy is to license my music to various media outlets (TV, film, video games, new media, etc). Unfortunately, most media want to see a proven track record before they are willing to license music. Since this is a new project, I have yet to license anything to
anyone. This makes it very difficult to get my foot in the door.
This is where you come in. In an effort to "build my brand," I am currently offering to license my music to your project with no charge. My only condition is that the license is non-exlusive: that is, if one of my songs is included in the soundtrack of your project, that I still have the right to license the song elsewhere.
If this sounds promising to you, please download a copy of "In the Shadow of the Mountain" from the Home Is Not Here website. If you like what you hear, but perhaps those songs don't quite fit in to your project, you can download an incomplete copy of the full-length album You are a secret, and you must never tell it here. (Please note that album art is currently in process.)
Thanks so much. I appreciate your willingness just to read this. I hope you get around to listening to the music, and I hope even more that you like what you hear and are willing to include it in your work.
Cheers,
Gene

ACTOR NEEDED
Physical Description
Male. 5-8 years old. African American.
(Height and physical appearance is not of too much importance. This is a none speaking role.)
Scene Description
It’s a stormy ocean in the sunny summer day. There are many people on the beach - mostly families. A 5 YEAR-OLD BLACK BOY is the only one who is in the water playing with the huge waves of the ocean. A young CAUCASIAN WOMAN IN HER 30’S is standing on the shore and calling the boy, gesticulating energetically. She looks a little scared and happy at the same time.
Project Background
The entire story takes place in one single bedroom with one window, with only one exception – the family’s favorite memory on a beach. **This is the scene with the child version of the male character** In that scene everything is bright: the sun, the intense blue color of the ocean, the sky… with his projection I want to show happiness to its maximum. This happiness especial only to them and nobody else; they are alone. A paradise made only for them.
