Spotlight - NBFC Member Updates

PRODUCTION SPOTLIGHT - TONY SEKULICH & LITA LLEWELLYN

Azure Sky Films is pleased to announce that their television series proposal "The New 20" has been accepted to the National Screen Institute's (NSI) 2010-11 Totally Television Program.

Series creator and writer Tony Sekulich said they are thrilled to be accepted to the program.

"The NSI program is the best in the country at developing emerging television talent. It is a great honor to be part of it," he said.

The New 20 is about four 40-ish guy friends who have not yet married and settled down. It explores the comic side of what it's like being 40 and on the singe scene.

Azure Sky President Lita Llewellyn said she hopes audiences will get a chance to see it sometime soon.

"This show is funny and poignant and even though it is about guys, it's a show women will find hilarious too."

The show is being produced by Toronto Producer Jordan Gross (Man vs. Minivan)

The program officially begins in Toronto in late September.

PRODUCTION SPOTLIGHT - RICHARD MACQUEEN (SAINT JOHN)

I've been busy lately. I just produced a 5 part webseries, RAISING SONNY . I launched it on 6 online channels a few weeks ago, the one with the most traffic is youtube (link is below) webisode 02. There are also some promo videos for the series you can check out on my channel, and the pilot webisode. Three more Raising Sonny webisodes will be posted online throughout the summer.

http://www.youtube.com/user/RichardMacqueen#p/u/0/5QVTB8cEmsw

Story background: A documentary film crew comes into an hopelessly oblivious stay-at-home dad's apartment to document him with his son. His major problem is that he is trying to cover up his failures, while they are just trying to exploit them.

If anyone can rate and subscribe that would be great.... after you watch please take 45 seconds to rate and scribble a quick note on the video page..... and if you LIKE IT take another 45 seconds to subscribe and Share the link on your facebook page or blog.

The internet allows us series producers to skip the Corporate Gatekeepers, and get straight to the viewer. It lets you decide if its to be thrown aside, or commended and shared. And if that happens enough, we get a following, and it begins to open doors enough for us to push through.

PRODUCTION SPOTLIGHT - DONOVAN RICHARD (MONCTON)

The  final picture edit and color correction are done on my short film venture project Delivrance (I was able to do this project thanks to a grant from NB Film and equipment and member support from the NB Film Co-op) . The lighting (in post) has been corrected as well. Special FX scenes are  done except for one touch up and credits are done.

I recently brought everything to my music composer Ronaldo Richard and his sound engineer partner Samuel Richard who are both working on the audio. Samuel has already worked on the sound for me and had cleaned up 3/4 of the audio track. We have three scenes we will need to do some ADR for so that will be done this week and possibly on the weekend depending on my actors and actresses availability. Samuel will also work on the foley and special sound effects.

So, in the next two weeks I am hoping to have the sound fx, final music and final mix of all the audio done!

As for Thirteen I wish I could have had it ready this year but it has taken the back burner to Delivrance as that is the one that I want to complete first. XIII is actually 3/4 edited as far as picture edit goes. But we haven't had a chance to look at music or sound effects for it which we will start to look at as soon as Delivrance is  done.

A little touch of Europe: The Padlocks of Venice

By Film Co-op member Joan Headley

Recently I returned from a European holiday to Italy. Lots of art, history and walking plus a little boating on a vaporetta water bus in quiet Venice. Not that I noticed it was quiet. Not until after we left and arrived in Florence where a cacophony of car engines and horns assaulted our ears. Back in the murky waterways of Venice, you hear the occasional boat motor. Every canal bridge has one or more gondoliers in striped shirts and wide brimmed straw hats singsonging "gondola-gondola-gondola." to the passing tourists.

The largest bridge, near the train station, arches its way over the Grand Canal with (too) many steps to bump your luggage up and down. Also, quite curiously, the bridge is festooned at many points with dozens upon dozens of padlocks that appear to have no apparent purpose. I wondered if the African lads who line the bridge with their designer purses for sale used the locks, but that did not appear to be the case. At our hotel, the desk man revealed the answer. It's a fad amongst the young people. Better than the 1930s fad of college boys swallowing live goldfish, I mused.

In Florence we noticed a sign warning of a large fine of several Euros for attaching padlocks to a bridge. The sign was decorated with a variety of padlocks of course.

FREDERICTON - UNDER THE STARS: CLASSIC FILM SERIES!

After seeing last Sunday's turnout at Under the Stars in downtown Fredericton and realizing that much of our audience was comprised of new faces, we felt it might be nice to share some history about the Under the Stars Classic Film Series.

First off, the Under the Stars series was created in 2003 after
discussions between Dave Seabrook, Manager of City Tourism, and
myself. At the time I was President of the NB Filmmakers’
Co-operative and had met Dave at a planning meeting for the Film Co-op's annual November Film Festival.

Dave had mentioned that he was curious about the logistics of
screening old movies and, oddly enough, I had been investigating the
possibilities of screening New Brunswick-made Short Films somewhere
downtown. Dave and I talked and the Under the Stars Classic Film
Series was born. Downtown Fredericton and the Centre for Arts and
Technology were invited and a partnership was born.

The City runs the concession stand, supplies staff and equipment, the
Film Co-op offers technical advice, programming of the short films, distributor negotiations and graphic design work when needed, Downtown Fredericton supplies advertising and marketing and the Centre for Arts and Technology supplies the pop-corn bags. And, last but not least, in order to present the films at no charge each of the partners throw money into the pot to cover the distribution rights.

Feature Film Presentation: The Thin Man

91 minutes

The Thin Man (1934) is the first installment of a popular series of films casting a sophisticated, glamorous, pleasure-seeking, and urbane husband-wife detective team (William Powell and Myrna Loy as Nick and Nora Charles). Director W.S. Van Dyke had previously directed Manhattan Melodrama (1934), in which stars Powell and Loy had displayed their unique and charming chemistry in their first of 14 film pairings.

The film's mystery story takes a back seat to the romantic screwball comedy, featuring the splendid, snappy banter between the rich, carefree married couple. They are known for sleuthing, solving murders, wisecracking one-liners, affectionate witticisms, delightful teasing and one-upmanship, alcoholic fun with plenty of martinis, a wire-haired terrier named Asta (actually named Skippy), and a loving relationship - often punctuated with quick kisses and slight hiccups.

The story is taken from Dashiell Hammett's 1934 detective novel of the same name, with a married couple that was supposedly modeled on the author's relationship with longtime love and playwright Lillian Hellman. [This was Hammett's fifth and final novel, written following The Maltese Falcon and The Glass Key.] The 'thin man' is actually the murder victim in the novel and film, and only appeared in the initial film. This low-budget MGM film, that was shot in less than three weeks (14 days) and earned over $2 million, is the best of the bunch.

FREDERICTON - Women in Film and Television-Atlantic & First Weekend Club Present…

Brigitte Berman Film Tour

Photo: Brigitte Berman

Brigitte Berman's new documentary Hugh Hefner: Playboy, Activist, Rebel is touring Atlantic Canada from July 10-13. Read on to find out more about it!

Brigitte Berman may not be a Playboy bunny, but she counts Hugh Hefner as among her friends. She's also one of Canada's leading documentary filmmakers. Her film Artie Shaw: Time is All You've Got, landed her an Oscar, a rare trophy on Canadian shelves. In July, Brigitte brings her latest feature to Atlantic Canada: Hugh Hefner: Playboy, Activist, Rebel, giving us the scoop before it opens in theatres around North America.

Brigitte Berman studied film and theatre arts at Queens University and credits her early positive experience as a film editor with really "throwing her into the craft of filmmaking." Like many, she discovered that editing film is a wonderfully creative experience. Eventually she took on the roles of writing, producing and directing, and now has an impressive 100-plus documentaries to her credit, as well as dramatic films.

How does a hard-working Canadian find herself invited to the private mansion of the playboy king? Hefner loved a film Brigitte had made about jazz musician Bix Beiderbecke and invited her to visit. Their friendship developed over a mutual love of jazz and film. "He did not trade on his playboy image at the mansion, but on his smarts."

He may be smart, but what an unlikely subject for a documentary by a woman.

A few years into their friendship, Brigitte attended the "glitz, glamour and beautiful women" of Hefner's 80th birthday party in 2006, and she got the idea for the film. "There is another side that tends to be forgotten." That side of Hugh Hefner may surprise you: years of dedicated activism. In the documentary, viewers will be taken through a social and political history of advancements: black rights, gay rights, abortion and freedom of expression, and often with the original playboy at the forefront. Featured friends you'll see include (among many) Gene Simmons, Reverend Jesse Jackson, Joan Baez and George Lucas. Foes get their say, as well, with commentary by public figures such as Christian activist Pat Boone, Reverend Jerry Falwell, feminist Susan Brownmiller and President Ronald Reagan. In fact, for years Hefner's name remained on the enemies' lists of Nixon, Reagan and J. Edgar Hoover.

To make this comprehensive documentary, Brigitte was given total access to Hefner's vast personal archives and had "complete creative and editorial control" over the film, something she insisted upon.

Brigitte Berman looks forward to bringing her film to Canada’s East Coast. “As a Canadian woman filmmaker from Toronto, I believe it is most important that I take the time to visit the Atlantic Provinces personally with my film. All the Atlantic WIFT Board members have worked incredibly hard to make this tour possible at such a busy time of year and I look forward to meeting many of the wonderful women filmmakers in the eastern provinces. Canadian women filmmakers need to get to know and support each other.”

The Hugh Hefner: Playboy, Activist and Rebel tour is sponsored by WIFT-AT, The First Weekend Club, The St. John's International Women's Film Festival, KinoSmith, New Brunswick Film, New Brunswick Filmmakers' Co-operative, DOC Atlantic and The Island Media Arts Co-op.

Ridley Scott, YouTube prep for 'Life in a Day'
Team with Kevin Macdonald to create 'user-generated' doc

By Gregg Kilday

(Ridley Scott. Photograph: Martin Argles)

Producer Ridley Scott and director Kevin Macdonald are joining forces with YouTube to create what is being dubbed "the first user-generated feature-length documentary."

Titled "Life in a Day," the doc will incorporate footage shot on July 24 that is submitted by YouTube users from around the world. It will have its world premiere at the 2011 Sundance Film Festival.

Macdonald, whose features include "State of Play" and "The Last King of Scotland," will direct, compiling the best footage into the final film, which will be exec produced by Scott and his Scott Free Prods. Individuals whose footage make it into the finished film will be credited as co-directors, and 20 of them will be flown to Sundance for the movie's bow.

Scott Free will work with Rick Smolan, creator of "A Day in the Life" and CEO of Against All Odds Prods. -- a California-based organization that specializes in the execution of large-scale global projects -- to distribute cameras to individuals in remote regions of the world in an effort to ensure that the film is as inclusive and representative as possible.

LG Electronics is supporting the project as part of its "Life's Good" campaign.

" 'Life in a Day' is a time capsule that will tell future generations what it was like to be alive on the 24th of July, 2010. It is a unique experiment in social filmmaking, and what better way to gather a limitless array of footage than to engage the world's online community," Macdonald said.

"A vital part of our mission is to support individual storytelling around the globe and to provide a platform for expression and experimentation," Sundance director John Cooper said. "This is a great way to engage the YouTube community and to provide festival audiences with something new and unexpected."

Details about uploading footage are available at www.youtube.com/lifeinaday
