Spotlight!

UPDATES: FREDERICTON: A CULTURAL CAPITAL FILM PROJECTS

The Apostles of Beauty (Short Historical Reinactment) was shot recently and is now in post-production. It is one of a number of film and video projects being produced by filmmakers through the Film Co-op with funding, equipment and crew resources from the following sponsors (Canadian Heritage, City of Fredericton and New Brunswick Filmmakers' Co-operative) as part of the Fredericton: A Cultural Capital activities and events.

The Story: Oscar Wilde visited Fredericton's famous opera house in 1882 to deliver a lecture on the Aesthetics Movement. This film recreates moments and characters surrounding the visit, in particular a meeting between Wilde and Fredericton's famous poet son, Charles GD Roberts.

The Filmmaker: Glendon McKinney studied film at York University. As well as writing and directing his own works, Glendon has worked as a production and/or costume designer on numerous independent productions including Tim McDonough's "The Strings Attached" and Jon Collicotts' WW II story, "A Song for the Homefront", for which he received the award for Best Achievement in Art Direction at the 2007 Silver Wave Film Festival. His film, "They Only Come Out at Night", won the Best Short Drama award at the 2005 Silver Wave Film Festival. His short film, "We Two Boys Together Clinging", was commissioned by and streamed online by the Struts Gallery in Sackville.

Glendon teaches through the NB Film Co-op's annual workshop series as well as also teaching film history and aesthetics at the Digital Arts College.

The Cultural Capital Projects will be screened at the 2009 Silver Wave Film Festival.

More updates to come on the other cultural capital projects in post and in the works!

Canadian Heritage designated Fredericton as a 2009 Cultural Capital of Canada to recognize and support the city's investment in arts and culture. In addition to the title, Fredericton received $500,000 for celebratory and legacy projects throughout the year. The City of Fredericton contributed $150,000 while additional cash and in-kind contributions were made by other government and cultural partners.

FREDERICTON - UNDER THE STARS: CLASSIC FILMS IN THE PARK

July 12 at Dusk

SHORT FILM SCREENING BEFORE FEATURE

Assassins (2008)
Director: Cameron Mitchell, Michel Guitard, Writer: D.J. Sweet
Producer: Tony Merzetti
Length: Aidan Dewirst, Steve Crane, Alicia Tremblay, Tessa McKim, Amanda Spear

Tension is high...Rubber bands are low...No one is safe. In the small university town of Celarton, 'trouble's a brewin'. It won't end until the last rubber band falls.

Casablanca (1943) (102 minutes)
Starring: Humphrey Bogart, Ingrid Bergman, Director: Michael Curtiz

World War II Morocco springs to life in Michael Curtiz's (THE ADVENTURES OF ROBIN HOOD, YANKEE DOODLE DANDY) classic love story. Colorful characters abound in Casablanca, a waiting room for Europeans trying to escape Hitler's war-torn Europe. Humphrey Bogart plays Richard "Rick" Blaine, a cynical but good-hearted American whose café is the gathering place for everyone from the French Police to the black market to the Nazis. When his long-lost love, Ilsa (Ingrid Bergman), surfaces in Casablanca with her Resistance leader husband, Victor Laszlo (Paul Henreid), Rick is pulled into both a love triangle and a web of political intrigue. Ilsa and Victor need to escape from Casablanca, and Rick may be the only one who can help them. The question is, will he?

Top-notch performances include Claude Rains as the chief of the French police and the major authority figure in Unoccupied France, Peter Lorre as the doomed Senor Ugarte, Sydney Greenstreet as Senor Ferrari, and Dooley Wilson as Rick's loyal friend and the café's pianist, Sam. The mesmerizing musical score, by Max Steiner, along with the well-structured plot, flawless acting, and unforgettable dialogue makes this one of the best films of all time.

ANNA SILK - THE IMPORTANCE OF ACTING WORKSHOPS

"As an actor, studying your craft is essential to developing the skills necessary to build a carreer and a life doing what you love! My weekly classes with Steve Braun have allowed me to disappear into a place where I feel at my safest and most vulnerable at the same time. Steve's passion for what he teaches fuels you to be at your best and at your bravest. It is not always easy to stand up there and tell the truth, but when you do you feel at your most creative and free. Steve's approach applies to the real world of what it is like to audition and have to make quick and bold choices, to prepare yourself to be at your most truthful, and to allow yourself to unfold and discover a scene moment to moment. I have learned and continue to learn so much from him and recommend his workshops for any new or veteran actor"

http://actingthetruth.com/

Anna Silk was born and raised in Fredericton, New Brunswick and, at the age of six, made her stage debut playing a squirrel in a local production of Hansel and Gretel. Having grown up in the seats of the local theaters watching her mother direct, it was no wonder that Anna went on to pursue a career in acting.

In 1999, Anna moved to Toronto where she began studying at The Actors Network. She has since gone on to work steadily in Toronto, Montreal, and more recently Los Angeles. Her film credits include Confessions of a Dangerous Mind (George Clooney), Where the Truth Lies (Atom Egoyan), The Company (Mikael Salomon), Deception (Richard Roy), Love Rules (Steve Robman), The Perfect Neighbor (Doug Jackson), Anonymous Rex (Julian Jarrold), and Earthstorm (Terry Cunningham), which is currently airing on the Sci-Fi Channel. Some of her television credits include Mutant X, Missing, Hate, and Puppets Who Kill, Legacy of Fear (Don Terry), Angela's Eyes (Stuart Gillard), and 'Til Death Do Us Part starring John Waters (Ken Hanes). She has also appeared in numerous television commercials including a spot for Nicoderm which has achieved cult status in Canada.

Anna recently wrapped Lost Girl, a new TV series pilot for SHOWCASE. Anna plays the lead role of Bo, a supernatural being who refuses to embrace her powers. She spent the early part of this past summer filming Stacking Chips, an independent feature film in which Anna plays one of three assassins looking to get out of the business.

Anna now calls Los Angeles home but loves to make visits to New Brunswick whenever she can.
