Spotlight - Community Support

PROFILE ON NB FILM CO-OP SUPPORTERS: ROBERT SIMMONDS CLOTHING

A special thank you to Robert Simmonds Clothing for all their support over the years of the Film Co-op, its members and the greater film community in NB!

Robert Simmonds Clothing has had the pleasure of supporting the NB Film Co-op for many years and see it as one of the première arts mediums for New Brunswick. We are fortunate to have a lot of dedicated and talented individuals who represent the NB Film Co-op so well.

In our endeavors to lend support to the film community, our store has been used as a location for a film and we have supplied wardrobe to various productions in and out of New Brunswick. We are always inspired when working with producers, directors, actors & wardrobe consultants and consider it an honor to help the NB Film Co-op in our own little way.

Kudos to you and your team for advancing Film in New Brunswick.

Regards, Paul & Linda

SAINT JOHN - RENEWED MEMBER - NATHAN SAVAGE

I first became interested in filmmaking in the late 90's back before the dawn of computer editing, when we had to edit as we shot on a friend's home video camera. Since then I've developed my filmmaking knowledge and skills through formal education, reading, and lots of hands on experience. In the early 2000's I started taking workshops at the Film Co-op and I started volunteering on many co-op and non-co-op film projects. I have also been volunteering regularly with Rogers TV since 2003. My first major film project was As the Sun Casts no Shadow on which I served as co-director, co-writer, DOP and editor. Completed in 2007, the film played at the Continental Drift and Silver Wave Festivals where it was nominated for several awards.

I recently completed a BA at UNBSJ with a Major in Information and Communication Studies and a Minor in Philosophy. My university career has had a particular emphasis on genre studies including a major research paper which defined the narrative structure of the western subgenre I called "undead wanderer" films. The topics of my studies might show through in some of the films I make with the frequent use of genre conventions and many philosophical references.

Although I've done all sorts of jobs from sound recording to directing, cinematography has been my area of concentration. Between short films and community television, I have put in hundreds of hours behind the camera. Despite my tendency to sometimes lean toward the technical side of filmmaking, my primary interest remains in telling stories that communicate what words cannot whether it be social commentary or tackling the problems of existence. In the future, I hope to do more writing and directing. To start I hope to shoot my script for an 18th century adventure/fantasy/thriller currently entitled The Beckon of the Beast . If all goes well shooting will start towards the end of the summer or early fall (2010).

FREDERICTON - NEW MEMBER - JORGE THIELEN

Jorge was born in Caracas, Venezuela. He grew up in the midst of Latin American political turmoil. He then moved to Florida at the age of 16 and two years later he escaped from the swamps of Naples, Florida and moved to Canada to study Communications at University.

In New Brunswick, Jorge involved himself in media related activities such as broadcasting, journalism, film, etc. Jorge is interested in media, communication, and fine arts; he is talented in creative writing and willing to learn more about film, a third language, photography, communication, and more.

Jorge hopes to move to Montreal in the fall and continue his university studies

FREDERICTON - RENEWED MEMBER - BRIAN ATKINSON

Hi Everyone,

Well, as it seems is usual, another wild and crazy year. Not as much foreign travel as usual, unless you count Alberta and British Columbia. And then there was Italy, the land of fast fast cars, twisty road, great wine and food and… and, well, just about everything one could want.

In the world of work it was a busy one but I did have the pleasure to work with some other Film Co-op members on some big projects for New Brunswick's Tourism and Parks. A great cover shot of Angela Cullins making her way by kayak through the Flower Pots at Hopewell Rocks. Jean Bertin, another model on the shoot, went for a swim in the rolling waves after the shoot was completed, but you might want to ask them about that. Jim Lavoie handled production duties and then up at Kouchibouguac where Angela was once again into the water, Andrew Long… built a great swing set for another cover shot.

In June, a book project that took two years to shoot, finally hit the stands: Miramichi: River of Character . I worked with Terry Power on this and it really was a labour of love. Met a ton of great people and learned why the Miramichi really is a special place. I try and get back there whenever I can now- so many good friends up there. Oh and this June, Nimbus released a book called Covered Bridges of New Brunswick that I shot for them last year. Not a big book, but it was one of the most fun projects that I have ever worked on, but just to say that cowboy boots aren't the right footwear for photographing covered bridges in. They just don't keep the water out the way a good pair of rubber boots would.

This summer is shaping up to be a busy one as well with Tourism work, a Canadian Geographic project and as one of the presenters on the Adventurer Clipper for Adventure Canada. An eight day cruise around the Gulf of St. Lawrence. Mostly what I have to do is talk about photography and take photos- doesn't sound to hard and with stops in Magdelan Islands, Cape Breton, Cape St. Marys, St. Pierre Michelon and more, it won't be hard to take.

I just want to mention that anytime anyone at the Co-op wants a little help with photography or just a bit of advice on photography, I'm always happy to chat, as anyone who knows me can testify too.

So all the best everyone on this year's summer shooting schedule.

WANTED: DESIGNER - PAID LABOUR

I'm hoping to do another photo project, and am looking for someone who could design a costume and hat of a representation of the Mad Hatter from Wonderland. The style would be part Goth, part Tim Burton's version and part my own creative thought. This is a paying job for anyone you know who could do a good job at it.

If you could pass this on, please have them contact me with by email: laser_shadows@hotmail.com   or phone at 476-2825.

The purpose is to post them on my website with my other costume photos/models.

WANTED: VOLUNTEER CAST AND CREW

Crew: Sound, AD, Grip
Cast: Male Role - 20-30
Female Roles (2) - 18-30

Email Jason Nicholson if interested at: jason.dj.nicholson@gmail.com

BACKGROUND ON THE PROJECT

Rayid: Results May Vary is an exploration in human horror. It deals with a controversial subject that most are afraid to address which is the sex trade and the value of human life. In Trotsky’s perspective you witness his work by tracking down these monsters and giving them the option to free themselves from the guilt of ruining innocent lives before judging them in a fashion that leads to mind prison.

--------------------------------------------------

FREDERICTON - VOLUNTEERS ACTORS NEEDED

I am putting out a call to see if there are local actors or someone who is interested in participating in a video performance piece. These would be volunteers who would be available for one or two days, for a few hours. Essentially they would have to remember a very simple line or gesture. This will take place during the week of July 19, 2010. They will be filmed and will have their image reproduced; I will have a contract for them to sign saying that they agree to be filmed and have their image shown in a gallery space.

Email Suzannes

Thanks Suzanne Caines
