WORKING WITH THE ROOM

By Jordan Roherty

There's nothing that takes anyone out of the movie-watching experience faster than bad sound. Bad acting you can laugh at, bad lighting could be considered intentional, bad camera-work could be the next Blair Witch. However, bad sound just doesn't work. And it never will.

I don't want to hit on every aspect of proper sound recording. I'm only going to discuss one; Room Tone, otherwise known as RT. For the uninitiated (and there are a surprising number out there), room tone is the general ambient noise of whatever location you are currently filming in. Fridges, stoves, crowds, crickets, the hum of the lights, or the ticking clock... all of that is considered room tone. Why is it important?

MEMBER UPDATES   MEMBER UPDATES   MEMBER UPDATES

I was a high school co-op student at the NB Film Co-op last year. I hope everyone is having a great time and still pursuing their cinematic dreams at the Co-op! I moved to Toronto after graduation to attend Humber College where I study film. I’ve learned a lot from the program so far and it has led me to meeting in person many great people – even Kevin Smith! I love what I’m doing and currently I’m in Calgary Alberta working the summer away for a company called SMART Technologies in the marketing department. Here I’m a summer student digital design coordinator; I’m more or less taking the company’s media files and organizing them for ease of use. With this new system I’m working on I will be helping create/design a website for clients to access files.

On the side, I’m also doing a lot in the video filming, directing, and editing for product promotion; it’s been great so far and I have the NB Film Co-op to thank for supplying the first steps in my career. I will be returning to Toronto in August to continue my education, then attending school in Australia for further film studies; wish me luck and thank you everyone who helped keep my interest in film going.

Regards,

Alex Donnelly

He has done everything from lace doilies in local theatres to bus explosions for large Hollywood features. Recent credits include the latest Trailer Park Boys feature in Halifax, "Dog Pound " and "A Dark Radius" shot locally.

Gary is a member of IATSE 849 and New Brunswick's only registered gun wrangler for film, the first for the Maritimes, and has been a large voice in proper weapons handling for the industry since 1995.

FREDERICTON - GALLERY CONNEXION FINDS A HOME!

One year after the flood of 2008, the Board of Directors is both relieved and ecstatic to announce that finally, after looking at over 50 venues, a new space for Gallery Connexion has been secured thanks to the vision and sponsorship of Brian Johnson, co-owner of Kingswood

Gallery Connexion will move into the ground floor of the Chestnut Complex at 470 York Street in Fredericton and be bigger and better than ever with approximately 4,000 square feet of space to turn into galleries, affordable artist studios and/or offices, a performance area and a café . The building itself has an immense amount of history and character. Originally the Chestnut Canoe Factory, and following that the Chestnut Night Club, it will now be converted into Gallery Connexion but will retain traces of its past. What was the dance floor of the club will now be Connexion’s main gallery with the original factory stonewalls running throughout.

Biz & Indie Film News

Locations Management is more than Director of Janitorial Services.

By Rex Baldwin, Locations Manager, 'American Sunset'

The #1 goal of Locations Management is to leave a location in a better state than you find it, so that another film crew will easily be able to film there in the future. The priority is Crew, Location, Truck, Set and Shot safety. With all of the crew, equipment, logistics and chaos associated with on-location filming this is a huge challenge. Combine this with under staffing, lack of resources and inexperienced PA's this becomes an extremely stressful role but it does come with its rewards.
Before getting into a more detailed discussion on Locations Management in general, I just want to say that it was a real honour working with the crew on 'American Sunset'. While it took a whole crew to make this feature film work I want to make a special mention of the exceptional team work of Sean Patterson (1st AD), Nicky Despres (Production Manager), Terry Daily (Transport Coordinator), Roddie (Transport Captain) and especially Andre Leger (Key PA) who saved our bacon and allowed me to do many things to make this show a success. It would have otherwise been impossible and would have compromised the production.
Many people see locations management as the people who deal with the trash, but Locations Management is far more than that.
