Banff, Alberta, June 16th, 2010
Atlantic Canadian based media production company Hemmings House Pictures was honored at the Banff World Television Festival on Wednesday. Greg Hemmings accepted three awards at the nextMEDIA Interactive & Pilots Awards. The awards honor the future of television programming, as well as showcasing the talent and creativity of international producers.
Three Hemmings House pilots were nominated in the Pilots Competition.
Sistema is a documentary about the Venezuelan classical music social program, Cubicle to the Cage is a TV series about a group of ordinary people being transformed into Mixed Martial Arts cage fighters, and Wrestling With Reality is a series following professional wrestlers as they strive to stay in the spot light.
Sistema and Cubicle to the Cage both won in their categories, with the third win being the top honor given to Sistema winning for the “Best Overall Pilot”.
Hemmings is excited to represent his team who has worked for many months to produce the three pilots which will be the beginning of the next season of the company’s production slate. “I am so proud to be part of the team at Hemmings House Pictures. Being recognized at this iconic international event helps us to continue creating within our province, and puts us on the map.” Sistema will broadcast on CBC, Cubicle to the Cage is in development with Toronto’s Portfolio Entertainment, and Wrestling With Reality has just been sold in Europe to the Extreme Channel.
Saint John, New Brunswick native and Banff Television Festival employee Sara Thorley-Titus attended the awards saying, “The awards that Hemmings House Pictures took home tonight are very important for the New Brunswick film industry, it was exciting to have the province represented so well, and recognized internationally.”
New Brunswick producers Andrew Tidby of Tidby Pictures, Tony Whalen of Shore Road Pictures, and Richard McQueen of Realm Productions Coalition, Mark Bishop of Marble Media and the film industry government representative Sandra Jamieson were also at Banff representing the province. This was the 31st year of the Banff World Television Festival.

Myth
The NB Film Co-op is 100% responsible for every aspect of its member's productions
FALSE
The NB Film Co-op is an educational resource and is not the film police or the better business bureau for filmmaking or big film brother with the all seeing eyes (Cat shivers).
All full members once trained with their volunteer hours in are able to access resources in some way by going through the proper channels as that is what the Co-op is set-up to be. No member should ever think that because a member received the go light to get assistance from the Film Co-op that somehow they have solved the mysteries of filmmaking and life as a whole. Wouldn't that be nice though, I would like to have those answers myself.
What is interesting about the film world is that one person's wonder filmmaker is another person's nightmare filmmaker. Everybody is drawn to different types of people, it's all so subjective.
How members direct their films, treat their volunteer or paid cast and crew, organize their shoots is their sole responsibility and I might add their liability. The buck stops at the filmmaker always not the Film Co-op or the crew and cast. The Co-op does give its members the training, tools, guidelines and resources to create in a responsible manner, what they do with the info is up to each film jedi (cut to Yoda doing back flip here)
For any member, new or alumni, when considering volunteering or taking on a paid position on a member shoot, the best practice is to meet the filmmaker and get a read on them, their personality, personal style or way of doing things etc… long before agreeing to volunteer on their production. You can also talk to people who have worked with them if this is their third or fourth kick at the production can. Hey, if at the first production meeting (or all of them) they show up naked, talk about the alien mother ship (I don't have a problem with this one myself) or just seem very scattered and disorganized to you, you will know that this perhaps may not be the shoot to cut your emerging film chops on. But then again, it does take time to get to know people and some times the most seemingly scattered people are brilliant filmmakers that you want to work with again and again because you love them as people and they have a great passion for storytelling. The irony is that those members you love may be in danger of being mowed down in the streets of NB by other members who aren't so charmed by them.....isn't life grand! (To recap: no great mysteries of life will be examined or figured out on film shoots)
But, as well, just because someone is a great volunteer and has taken 50, 000 workshops, it doesn't necessarily mean that they are great filmmakers or meant to be filmmakers or screenwriters etc.... Also, keep in mind that there are a lot of emerging members doing their first and second productions so the expectation that they will have a perfect shoot is not fair to them or you. Productions are difficult, hard work and time consuming. No matter how organized any of us are, something always happens. If someone is not into that, they should steer clear of productions.
In extreme cases of volunteer crew and cast being abused or a location or sponsor being ticked off etc… staff should always be contacted and informed and not have to find this out the hard way. If someone doesn't like someone's style of filmmaking, finds them disorganized, rude etc etc or just plain weird (have you met my relatives?), that is different…..sensible thing is to not work with them again and tell then bluntly why you are not working with them again and sure, let staff know as they don't often get to bring out the rubber hoses on Fridays anymore.
The Co-op can keep an eye on things always and educate members on what is expected and what is not acceptable. The Co-op does so much for its members, the members themselves do have to take some responsibility and handle their interpersonal relationships in the creative arts.
Just like the Nike sneaker commercial, just say NO. Nobody has to work on a particular member's shoot or be forced to take someone on their shoot that they do not want there. If you can't say no, then talk to Cat and she and you can discuss coping strategies, hopefully over a nice cold beer. Magic words were just spoken.
That's a wrap!

Guitarist and composer
I've been playing the guitar for 20 years and composing for film and television for almost as long.
My first professional composing gig came in high school, when I wrote some theme and incidental music for the CBC News for New Brunswick. I delivered an eclectic variety of music, including big band swing and reggae themes.
Most recently I have written songs for the debut season of Pure Pwnage, a comedy series on the Showcase network. This music was in a hard rock vein. I also provided guitar parts for some other songs on the show. I'm hoping to see the program picked up for a second season so that I can continue my collaboration with writer-producer Geoff Lapaire.
I'm living in Fredericton for the summer and hoping to get involved in some scoring projects through the Film Co-op. I'm able to compose in a wide diversity of styles, from classical and jazz to rock and pop. You can see samples of my work here:

ACTOR NEEDED
Physical Description
Male. 5-8 years old. African American.
(Height and physical appearance is not of too much importance. This is a none speaking role.)
Scene Description
It’s a stormy ocean in the sunny summer day. There are many people on the beach - mostly families. A 5 YEAR-OLD BLACK BOY is the only one who is in the water playing with the huge waves of the ocean. A young CAUCASIAN WOMAN IN HER 30’S is standing on the shore and calling the boy, gesticulating energetically. She looks a little scared and happy at the same time.
Project Background
The entire story takes place in one single bedroom with one window, with only one exception – the family’s favorite memory on a beach. **This is the scene with the child version of the male character** In that scene everything is bright: the sun, the intense blue color of the ocean, the sky… with his projection I want to show happiness to its maximum. This happiness especial only to them and nobody else; they are alone. A paradise made only for them.

Lies to God :: Casting Call :: Young Mary
Principal photography for the Lies to God short film, a story about a young woman struggling with the effects of abuse by an older man, was completed over this past weekend. The amazing, lean and mean cast and crew worked tirelessly to complete this part of the filming and the footage looks amazing.
Thank you Andrew and Becky for your amazing performances. I don't know, and probably don't want to know, where you have to go to bring out those emotions. Thank you to Larry, Bruce, Justin, Robert and Jeff for doing everything and then some. And a huge thank you to "S" for keeping us fueled with wonderful meals. Your chocolate cheese cake was exceptional.
All that remains to wrap up are a few inserts.
The story calls for Mary (played by the wonderful Becky Forbes) to have a couple of flashbacks to her childhood. One of these flashback scenes is of a young Mary being pushed by Raymond on a playground swing.
To film this short scene, we require a young actress, about 8 years old. The filming will be of the back of the actress with Raymond (played by equally amazing Andrew Long) pushing her on the swing. Filming will take about an hour and scheduled when it is convenient for the actress and her parents.
A couple of important items to note. The actors’ faces filmed for this scene will not be shown in the finished film. The scene, once edited, will last approximately 5 seconds in the finished product. Also, written parental consent is required, as is their presence during filming.
For more information or if you are interested, please contact Robert through the Lies to God web site. http://blog.liestogod.com/contact/
