NETWORKING NETWORKING NETWORKING NETWORKING

Networking is the life force of any business. It is especially important if you're self-employed, like for example...oh I don't know...storytellers (I was once told by a prententious director that it's pretentious to call yourself a filmmaker so storyteller it is).

As most of you know, making a film of any kind is a Rancor of a task, and takes many hands to get one done. Lets say you want to make a short film about about ninja zombies in love. You're going to need those hands (and not just for the ninja zombies). Where do these hands come from? Do they fall out of the sky? Are they hiding under your dusty bed? Go check, I can wait.

Find any? If you did...well, there's something really wrong with you. For the rest of you who just found dust bunnies and sun spots come with me and I will tell you how to find these ellusive hands.

Lets start simple. If you're super green and have yet to be on set don't fret, I can help I bet, won't you let me introduce you to some people I've met. This is your first and easiest networking tool. Talk to Cat and Tony. Don't be shy, you can do it. These guys are walking encyclopedias of the NB area and beyond. You need something, they'll hook you up and get you started on your merry way.

If this isn't your first rodeo, then these tips are for you.

Talk to everyone on set. AD, DP (DOP), AC, MOO, BRA (ok I made up the last two) it doesn't matter what position they're in. See that lowly PA skulking in the corner of the room guarding a box of kleenex? Talk to that guy too (he's still got dreams that haven't been crushed). The point I'm tryingt to make here is that you want to make yourself known to as many people as possible and you want to get their contact info. This, ladies and gentlemen is your first step in networking.

Just talking to these people is not enough. Odds are if you and I were on a set together and you got my info but never followed up with me, I'm going to forget who you are. I mean, I can barely remember what I did yesterday. In this day and age there is no exuse not to keep in contact with people that you meet. I mean there's Facebook/Myspace/Blogging/Vlogging/Twitter/Email/Carrier Piegon and dare I say it........a phone still works. Periodically check in with people that you've met and see what's up in their life. Find out what projects they are working on, see if they need a hand. This is the second step in networking

Now, networking doesn't stop on a film set. This planet is full of interesting and weird people who, for some reason don't make movies for a living but do other things. These people can one day lead to more work, or they might end up owning a cool location that you can use, or know how to kill a guy with a dixie cup. If some of these contacts end up being business people or giant corporations there's an extra step that you may want to take. Personal cards! People love getting snail mail, it's such a novelty and it shows that you care.

Going back to that project about ninja zombies in love. Lets put your networking skills to practice! You've met sally who is in your aerobics class who happens to be training as a ninja. Mike who lives next door is one step away from being homeless and has all kinds of tattered clothing you can borrow, And Stanley your dentist is a part time grave digger. Oh, and lets not forget Gerome the PA guarding the Kleenex. Turns out his uncle owns a prosthetics shop that specializes in zombies. Because you've networked with these people you have the means to ask for their help to bringing your masterpiece to life! That is the third and final step in networking, asking for help.

I know this all sounds time consuming (and it can be, so suck it up princess) however if you want those hands I was writing about earlier to help out on your next project then I suggest you start practicing.

NEWS FROM THE MONCTON MEMBERS

Hello from Moncton. With the excitement of the summer's arrival, the season not only brings sunburns and beach bikinis, it also brings yet another exciting season of filmmaking. It's shaping up to be another busy one again this year. Moncton NBFC members have been busy writing, in pre-production, and participating on fellow member's film shoots.

With the success of AHA (Actors helping Actors) group in Fredericton, there has been demand to get things going here in Moncton as well. We have begun the process and have been in contact with the City of Moncton who have once again came through for us offering many alternatives for locations. Our hurdle now is that we're all so busy with productions, performances, getting our films sent out to festivals, and the ever exciting NBFC 30th Anniversary celebration preparations, that we have decided to put AHA off until end of August. But fear not Moncton actors, at that time we will send a call out inviting those interested in joining the group. In the meantime, watch for casting calls and auditions, we want YOU! We have a few productions coming up real soon.

Catch you all on a film set, or on a big screen… if not on a beach.

The Arts

FREDERICTON - NEW BRUNSWICK COLLEGE OF CRAFT & DESIGN

Fredericton. 15 June 2009.

SAMPLE LEMONADE AT OUR NEWLY TRANSFORMED GALLERY SPACE WHEN YOU EXPLORE WORK BY OUR 2009 GRADUATING CLASS at the closing reception in the New Brunswick College of Craft and Design Drawing Studio Saturday June 20 from 3:30 to 5 pm.

Makin' Lemonade, artwork by the 2009 graduating class at the New Brunswick College of Craft and Design is now on in the Drawing Studio at NBCCD. From studio to gallery, literally: yes, we've transformed our drawing studio and created the first graduate gallery in this beautiful airy space on the third floor of the college. If you are a prospective student, thinking of taking night classes, enrolled or about to enroll in our exciting summer program EdVentures, or are any kind of art lover, come, and see the work from the generation of artists about to join you in the arts community in Fredericton and beyond. The show highlights work from Ceramics, Communication Design, Fashion, Metal and Jewellery Arts, Photography, and Surface Design/Textiles Studios.

If you were so late that you missed the fashion at this year's catwalk extravaganza, "Fashionably Late", if you want ideas for fresh ways to communicate your visual message, or are looking for the newest hottest potter in town, this is the show for you.

Tulle, Satin, Lace, animation, copper, silver, porcelain, raku, Black and White and colour photography - we have it all.

"Makin' Lemonade" takes art from concept to conception and adds a little more to the regular recipe - for something delightfully fresh and different. Don't miss this very special event - June 1-20 with a closing reception at the college on June 20 after the students' graduation ceremonies at Centre Communautaire St-Anne. Join us between 3:30 and 5 pm on the 20th or come anytime before then and celebrate with us. For more information contact the college at 453-2305, and ask for Harriet Taylor or contact karenruet@gmail.com. Our new gallery can be accessed through the main doors on Queen Street - 457 - between the hours of 9 and 4:30 pm, and by appointment. Follow the Makin' Lemonade posters and then explore the art on the first floor of this historic building in the heart of the Historic Garrison District. See our graduate portfolios online at www.nbccd.net

SACKVILLE - CALL FOR VOLUNTEERS

The 2009 Ok.Quoi?! Arts Festival + SappyFest are fast approaching! These festivals will take place MONDAY JULY 27 to SUNDAY AUGUST 2. Now is your chance to become a part of one of Atlantic Canada’s most respected and anticipated cultural events.

We are extending a call for volunteers who can contribute a little or a lot of their time, in a range of capacities during these two festivals. This is a great opportunity to work with a variety of artists and musicians behind the scenes. Volunteers are needed to help with the Kids Corner Power Jam, merchandise, the BBQ, as security, making burgers, and more.

We would also sincerely appreciate if anyone planning a trip outside of Sackville would take some posters, postcards, and programs with them!

We greatly appreciate and acknowledge the contributions made by festival volunteers, and extend our thanks to those who will share their time with us this year.

If you are interested in volunteering, please write to isabel@strutsgallery.ca for more information.

FREDERICTON MUSIC EVENT!

A thrill at the Grill! The Jim Axelrod Big Little Band will be playing at The Grill on York (Kings Place) on Friday, June 26, from 6:00 to 8:00 p.m. The band features Jim Axelrod on trumpet and vocals, Joe Richard on guitar, and Tom Richards on saxophone. Enjoy a delicious meal while listening to some sweet blues and jazz!

------------------------------------------------------------

FREDERICTON - BARD IN THE BARRACKS

It's that time of the year again where Bard in the Barracks is looking for volunteers! This year is a little different than last year mainly because it is taking place at Odell Park instead of the Barracks. We'll need three volunteers a night to work the
door and concessions until intermission - this means that you won't be able to see the show that night but you will be able to come back to see it for free on another night of your choice. The dates are June 24th to the 28th and June 30th to the 4th of July
(no show on the 29th). Volunteers will need to be at Odell Park at 6:00pm. Wear warm clothing. Feel free to pass this along to anyone who might be interested!

If you're interested, please let me know by email (nbacts@unb.ca ) or by phone 458-7406 as soon as possible. Hurry because the places fill up quickly!

Thanks,

Annick

Biz & Indie Film News

AS SCENE FROM HERE, THERE AND EVERYWHERE

By Jim Lavoie

Great workshop put on by Gary Ferguson (Gun wrangling for Movie/TV productions) to a packed crowd from across the province at the NB Film Co-op on Monday night.

He covered a very serious subject, interjecting the right amount of levity, and the responsibilities of all involved when a firearm is on set. For those of you with the mindset of knowing all about firearms better change your thinking. This is not hunting 101, but directly related to production procedures and the volume of background information required (reading glasses suggested). This will definitely separate the wannabes from the serious potential gun wranglers.

The workshop covered some of the rules/regulations governing types of firearms/type/classifications etc. The degree of detail in the display of weaponry Gary presented was amazing. Replicas were passed amongst the class and to hold one and feel the weight/inspect the detail was surreal. Talk about faking it…….

It was great to have a mixture of members and industry people as participants in what I feel should be a compulsory workshop. I say this because no matter what your role is in a production when a firearm is to be used, safety is the number one priority for all. The attitude "I am not in the scene anyway so, no problem" is wrong and potentially dangerous.

FEELS GOOD ALE AND SAIL
Now for something completely different! Perhaps this will be a cure for what ales you. This may well speak to the beer wrangler in all of us. The folks at www.feelsgood.ca in conjunction with Picaroons have had an ongoing contest that closes June 21 . If you are an artistic/creative person in NB, then you may just be able to brew up the winning design for a beer label for the soon to be unveiled Picaroons Feels Good beer. The only limitation is time, not on your idea, as indicated previously, June 21 is the deadline submission, and, funny you should ask, the winning design puts you aboard the Feels Good Canada Day (week long event) Houseboat Party. This happens June 29 - July 3. If that's not enough you may personally imbibe as many of your newly designed beverages as possible- in a responsible manner of course.

Even if you don't enter the design contest you might just want to partake in a day or a week of festivities on board the Feels Good booze er cruise line. This is a great idea with bands and friends ready to have some safe fun while celebrating our nation's birthday. Different packages available, but going fast. Contact Feels Good Fleet Admiral Paul McAllister for details paul@feelsgood.ca or www.feelsgood.ca

Have you ever been to a party where a river runs through it? Now is the time!

This Sunday is Fathers day (I know some of us have been called mothers from time to time) and may all of us (including, ahem grandfathers) have a well deserved day of recognition and special treatment. And, since this is not going to happen good luck on the lottery! Lol, just kidding ladies, its not like we gents ever complain do we?

Speaking of summer, this is going be a hot one, hopefully the weather as well, as there are more Film Co-op member production meetings happening than ever and crews already shooting so we are off and rolling en masse. Oh yeah, one more thing, lets be careful out there……..

ISLAND VIEW - ACTOR PROFILE - FONYA IRVINE

Acting is a passion so deeply ingrained in my heart that I can often think of nothing else. When I step onto a stage or a set I feel exhilarated. Acting is a way for me to share my heart and soul with others - translating abstract thoughts and feelings into concrete reality for the audience.

I'm really grateful and proud to have participated in many film productions in New Brunswick. Regardless of whether the production is a feature or a short, I feel completely at home on the set. The Maritimes have a growing film community, and networking is key for getting involved. Becoming involved in the Film Co-op and attending workshops are great ways for learning about new productions.

Acting takes work, and I am a strong advocate for continuing training between productions. In the last month I have attended three different workshops: Acting for the Camera through the NB Film Co-op (Suzanne Short and Gretchen Kelbaugh), Acting for the Camera with Megan Follows through the Summer Institute of Film and Television, and the ACT NOW program with Tom Todoroff in Toronto. These workshops provided me with the tools to hone my skills and to foster confidence. Workshops provide a platform for meeting new people and networking ideas.

My next stop: New York City for a one-week intensive program with Tom Todoroff. Acting takes discipline, commitment, fearlessness and above all else, love.
