END OF THE LINE
Finally, after months of sleepless nights and lying and stealing to survive, my bastard child, "End of The Line" is finally in the can. It seems like only yesterday that I was raising blood pressures as I told several co-op members of my intention to shoot, of all places, on a frozen lake. But as the days passed, this crazy idea became more and more of a reality.
I had to shoot the film on Grand Lake, its where I grew up and I knew full well how gorgeous of an area it was, perfect for my film. It also helped that I had so many friends in the area! Before I knew it local businesses were helping out with the production. We were getting pizzas, coffee, breakfast, gasoline and free locations to shoot and even store our heavy equipment. Heck, the mayor was even involved and plays a role in the film! Thank you all!
The first shooting day came and went without a hitch as we captured Grand Lake and Minto's scenery. Day two was colder but totally worth it as we shot the local ice fishing tournament on French lake “20 minutes from Grand Lake”. Once again the locals were great (some of them even ended up in front of the camera) and the conditions were perfect. Week-end number one was finished, but we were far from done with this monster.
Late the following week, we drove down to Minto, bought a bunch of lumber, and built our very own ice shack! We managed to get it on the ice in our “secret cove” before dark, and just in time because we were going back to camera the very next day... at dawn.
My fearless cast and crew, Pierre Huard, Andrew Long, Bruce LeGrow, Sarah Bood, Lex Gigeroff, Big Dave Fanjoy, and Christine LeBlanc, met me at the Minto Tim Horton's at 5:30am. After a quick breakfast, we were on the ice. The weather was constantly changing. It would be clear for a half hour, then snow lightly, then hard, then clear again, but it really added something to the footage and worked to our advantage. Shooting went smoothly through the day and into the night, as we moved our shoot into the Minto Legion. We wrapped before 9pm and headed back to Fredericton, exhausted.
We started our last day around noon at the Grand Lake Senior and Children's ice fishing tourney. We stuck around for a bit and got our hands on some of the fish that were caught, including the second place catch! Once we were satisfied, we headed back to the shack for some of the more gruesome scenes, between taking turns on the snowmobile!
Darkness had fallen on the lake by this time and everyone was anxious to shoot the snowmobile crash. We headed out with no power source except for a small generator, lots of the set-up was complete using the snowmobile's light in fact. After getting some initial shots in the bag, in was time for Bruce's stunt... we were gonna hit him with the snowmobile for real! At a blistering 1mph, we rushed to Bruce who threw himself into the snowmobile hard and then landed without a sound. Everyone was scared for a second because he wasn't talking but then we realized it was just good acting. No one had to go to jail after all! We wrapped around midnight and headed back to town, victorious.
“End of The Line” is now in post-production and is expected to be finished in late April, early May.
I have to thank my cast and crew big time for helping me out, Cathie and Tony for making it possible, and my parents, for supporting me by letting me drop out of university to make films, thanks everyone!

Saint John and Halifax based Hemmings House Pictures in association with CBC Land and Sea is proud to present the brand new episode “Winter Wave Riders” .
“Winter Wave Riders” explores Nova Scotia’s vibrant winter surfing community while profiling three local hardcore surfers braving the sub-zero Atlantic Ocean in pursuit of that perfect wave.
Featuring Nova Scotia’s first and only pro surfer Nico Manos; renowned Canadian author Lesley Choyce; and Janine Strickland, co-owner and surf instructor with Lawrencetown’s One Life Surf, “Winter Wave Riders” is full of wicked waves, awesome rides and icy beaches. Be sure to tune in nationwide for a rare inside look at this rapidly growing East Coast extreme sport full of colourful characters and stunning natural scenery.
A Co-production between CBC Atlantic and Greg Hemmings of Hemmings House Pictures, “Winter Wave Riders” is directed by Eva Madden-Hagen and written by Eva Madden-Hagen and Drew Hagen.
Reached for comment, director Eva Madden-Hagen says she’s thrilled to be bringing this project to CBC television. “I grew up watching Land & Sea in Newfoundland so I was really stoked for the opportunity to tell this story”. Madden adds “Winter surfing can be a real challenge to shoot too since you can’t really schedule the waves. But we were lucky to capture some great surf footage with Nico, Lesley and Janine, so visually this is going to be a really amazing episode”.
Executive Producer Greg Hemmings says he’s very excited to produce a surfing documentary featuring the East Coast surfing scene and its world class waves. “The waves here are stunning and in the winter the surf is as good as anything I’ve seen in Hawaii and California. It’s hard to get a bad shot.”
“Winter Wave Riders” will be broadcast on Sunday March 14th, as part of CBC’s long running national program, Land & Sea, airing every Sunday at noon.

GALLERY OF NEW BRUNSWICK COLLEGE OF CRAFT & DESIGN OPENING
For Immediate Release: Tuesday March 9, 2010
Fredericton, NB. 3/09/2010. The Gallery at the New Brunswick College of Craft and Design is honoured to be opening a spectacularly beautiful exhibition of knives on Tuesday March 16 from 5 - 6:30 pm by Thomas Ferrero entitled Artifacts of Fantasy.
"Artifacts of Fantasy examines our understanding of what defines a knife. What purposes do knives have? And who might the users be? I ask the audience to suspend their awareness that these pieces were made by a human artist and entertain the possibility that they are small fragments of real yet unexplained civilizations," wrote Tom Ferrero in his artist statement.
"As a species, we have explored nearly every region of our planet and have drawn back the veil concealing the workings of our solar system. In doing so we have left our imaginations to forage the theoretical domains of human understanding, nesting in the deepest depths of our oceans and roving the vastness of our universe. This work entertains the "what if," celebrates the areas unexplored, and contemplates the cultures existing in these realms."
Take a sneak preview at www.tomferrerostudio.com for info on the artist.
