The workshop line up this year that was organized for Moncton has had a good turn out and more workshops are coming up such as HD Camera, Acting for Film and Production Design. In turn, the workshops have attracted some new people and the publicity of these workshops has also generated some inquiries by a few people interested in getting into filmmaking in Moncton.

It promises to be yet another very productive year for the Moncton members who have been gaining recognition in the area.

If you are interested in any of these projects please do not hesitate to contact the filmmakers directly. Talent in crewing and casting is always sought after no matter where you live.

MATTHEW BROWN (FREDERICTON) - TIM O'NEILL (SAINT JOHN)

COLLABORATIVE WRITING

Recently I have been working with another writer and Film Co-op member, Tim O'Neill, in developing and writing a feature length script.

Prior to that, I had been struggling to put together a feature by myself and had come to the conclusion that collaboration is necessary, even if it just means having someone else to challenge your ideas and the direction you are headed in.

Since writing with Tim, I have found that although we do not always agree (more often then not the disagreements are philosophical in nature!), the discussion alone makes the whole process worthwhile. More often then not, something you may think makes perfect sense, cries out to be countered by another perspective. Since our collaboration began last summer, I think it is safe to say that not only are we now more confident in our writing, together and independently, but our movie watching has been enriched by a closer observation and conversation concerning character arcs, plot and themes.

SO, if you feel you have hit a wall with your writing and are becoming discouraged, have faith – this may just be the god's (not the one in the machine!) way of telling you to go out and get feedback from another writer or better yet join forces with them. In the end, writing with another person is like having an audience member/critic/character right there with you.

NB FILM CO-OP'S NEW SOCIAL NETWORK SITE

If there is one thing that Facebook has proven, it's the fact that people like spying on their friends' newest status updates, photos, videos, blogs and wall posts. For the past couple years social networking sites like facebook have captivated over 150 million users worldwide connecting friends and family of all ages. Don't bother picking up the phone anymore, your friend's status message tells all! Welcome to the wonderful world of social networking!

Introducing the new NBFC Online Community.

This private social network will only be made available to NB Film Co-op members and will be administered by Cat with Chafic Haddad's technical expertise.

Here members will have access to several web services such posting photos, videos, website information and important information for shoots and past films. This resource will allow NB Film members to stay in the loop with projects on the go and will put a face to some of the names we read about in the weekly newsletter.

Why would you start ANOTHER social network if you already have facebook? Well the difference here is that this new network will focus only on members of the film co-op and can be used almost as the IMDB (Internet movie database) for the NB Filmmakers Co-op. Please take a minute to explore the new website @ http://nbfilmcoop.ning.com

TWITTER AND FILMMAKERS

by Chaf Haddad

Twitter is a service for friends, family, and co–workers to communicate and stay connected through the exchange of quick, frequent answers to one simple question: What are you doing?

Twitter is a simple social networking tool which has gained much popularity in 2008 as more bloggers and internet junkies discovered a new broadcast platform which limits each post to 140 characters. Twitter can be kept as a private network between friends however, many people spy on what public conversations are happening using the Twitter search engine: www.search.twitter.com

Here you can search for topics such as "Canadian film" and anyone who has mentioned those words in a tweet will be displayed. If you dig what a person is "tweeting" about, you have the option of following their twitter feed which shows up in an aggregated friend feed.

Many argue that this form of mini-blogging is a waste of time, however if you are a content creator or the author of a blog, why not use Twitter as a means of reaching out to like minded individuals? Many artists are using Twitter to launch works of art as well as to network with other artists to share resources and information. Twitter is a great platform for bloggers who want to connect to their readers and let them know when they've updated their blog or website. Give it a try at http://www.Twitter.com and start following http://www.twitter.com/chaf

The Film Co-op staff thanks Chafic Haddad for all his hard work creating the Film Co-op network and getting the Film Co-op involved in Twitter!

The Arts

FREDERICTON - "Les fous de la scène"

by Ida Orenbach

The French play, Les Disparus, runs this Saturday and next at the Centre communautaire Sainte-Anne. Film Co-op members Dennis Poirier and I are acting in it, and Film Co-op member Ryan O'Toole will be filming it. Stephan Hamel designed the poster and is the sound technician.

Les Fous de la scène will take the show to Saint John on April 17, where we will be competing in the Festival de théâtre communautaire en Acadie.

Les Disparus (The disappeared), by Marie-Christine Lê-Huu, is not one story but two parallel, intersecting stories. As some characters ascend, others descend. Grace, an Anglophone, continually uses mental cruelty to shake off Jacques, her hypochondriac, socially maladjusted roommate. Phil psychologically manipulates his best friend, Ben, to ease his own guilty conscience. What can be weighing on his conscience? What has happened to bring them to this point? A comical reflection on self-centredness and malice, the play explores the multiple aspects of human stupidity with humour. Les Disparus is a little killing game where every word hits closer and closer to the mark; it's a small enterprise of destruction in order to overcome boredom. And it's all served up with the piquant flavour of satire to delight you.

Les Disparus runs Saturday, March 21, and Saturday, March 28, at the Centre communautaire Sainte-Anne at 8:00 p.m. Tickets are $12 for adults and $6 for students, and are available from cast members or at the door.

-------------------------------------

FREDERICTON - MONDAY NIGHT FILM SERIES!

WALTZ WITH BASHIR
March 23, 8pm at Tilley Hall, UNB Campus
Director: Ari Folman
Cast: Ari Folman, Ron Ben-Yishai,
Ronny Dayag, Dror Harazi
Run Time: 90 minutes
Country: Israel, Germany, France
Year: 2008
Language: Hebrew, German with English subtitles

Nominated for the Golden Palm Award at the 2008 Cannes Film Festival and an official selection of the 2008 Toronto International Film Festival®, Ari Folman’s exquisite animated documentary Waltz with Bashir is a decisive entry into the canon of war films. Told from the point of view of Folman himself, it is a brutally honest exploration of the reliability of memory and the long-term impact of violence on young soldiers.

The film’s opening sequence follows twenty-six wild and angry
dogs as they run through a town, stopping to bay with rage under a man’s window. This scene is the recurring nightmare of one of Folman’s army comrades, and it is his dream that inspires Folman to search into his own past. While he knows that he participated
in the 1982 war with Lebanon, Folman has virtually no memory of the events. He goes in search of his fellow soldiers, hoping that by collecting their memories he will be able to recreate his own.

Folman has elevated the film’s impact by securing the extraordinary
involvement of Yoni Goodman, who created astonishing animations of images originally shot on film. This visual approach takes Waltz with Bashir beyond ever-present news footage and into the surreal terrain of image and memory.

Folman does not delve into the politics of the conflict, choosing instead to explore a dark chapter in his (and Israel’s) life. His conclusion, made in the last few shocking moments of the film, is a tribute to the filmmaker’s own moral honesty and to generations of young people scarred by ungodly acts of war.

“Folman has made a beautiful, disturbing and deeply compelling
film that documents the horrors to which he and his
friends were witnesses, while offering hope that he and others
might, some day, heal from the ravages of war.” – Kim

Their worlds collide when Brandi, driving home from a club after too many drinks and pills, accidentally hits Tom, the impact smashing his body head-first through her car's windshield. atlantic - Women in Film and Television-Atlantic (WIFT-AT)/ Femmes du cinéma et de la télévision – Atlantique (FCT-AT)

Women in Film and Television-Atlantic (WIFT-AT)/ Femmes du cinéma et de la télévision – Atlantique (FCT-AT) celebrated the opening of the first Atlantic Canadian Chapter of Women in Film and Television at the Halifax Club on Monday, March 9.

WIFT-AT/FCT-AT had the perfect launch. From introducing the Founding Board, to attendees signing up as members and volunteering for committees, to Sharon McGowan’s inspirational presentation.

As one of the founding members of WIFT-Vancouver which just celebrated its twentieth anniversary this past week, Sharon McGowan offered a remarkable perspective on what WIFT-Vancouver has accomplished in the past two decades, along with how much more needs to be done in balancing the gender disparity in the film, television and new media industries in Canada: “We are now in an era of subtle sexism - or gender bias - where bias against women and their abilities flourishes in small, unspoken ways that are accepted in institutions and society. Subtle sexism may appear subtle but it has a profound effect. In the United Nations index for overall human development, Canada placed 4th in the world in 2006. When gender disparities were taken into consideration, Canada slid to 83rd of 136 countries.”

WIFT-AT/ FCT-AT is up and running with a terrific base of members’ talent and four clear goals:
1) research and networking; 2) training and professional development; 3) celebration; 4) advocacy.

WIFT-AT / FCT-AT announced the Founding Board on March 9th, which will remain in place until the Annual General Meeting during the Atlantic Film Festival in September 2009, however we are seeking volunteers and committee members.
