GET INVOLVED IN THE FILM CO-OP COMMUNITY: It will change your life
I remember when I first started volunteering at the Film Co-op years ago to help out lone staff person Tony Merzetti and President Chris Campbell who became my close friends.
I really enjoyed volunteering because my mom and dad had been volunteers in their community of Nelson Miramichi. They were involved in Big Brothers and Big Sisters as well as other orgs. They never seemed to stop from what I remember. They always told my sister and I when we were growing up that it was important to get involved in your community and help out.
Flash forward to Cat at the Film Co-op just starting to get involved there.
I became well acquainted with some specific members and staff and one in particular I fell in love with.
I was so shy though and it was difficult for me to interact with anyone without blushing a lot. My ears would turn really red and get hot and my neck would get all red and blotchy. I had really short hair so I couldn't hide my rosy face and neck under a romantic swath of hair! This especially happened to me when Tony would get me to give tours to potential Co-op members to get me in the habit of talking to people and being more comfortable around them. It took years of this type of routine, and a lot of lame jokes on my end to put myself and others at ease. Tony even asked me to give production management workshops when I was the only one doing production management on a lot of the member shoots, that was a rough go. Standing in front of people - terrifying!
(Photo - Cat and Tony's Wedding Day)
I remember scrubbing floors, organizing books and magazines, taking phone calls, sending out emails, learning how to be more computer smart (late bloomer), giving tours, organizing workshops and screenings and throwing member socials.
All the above activities helped tremendously and I had members volunteering and helping me every step of the way as well so, I became more social by being around people all the time. It's hard to believe that a shy girl in her twenties has progressed so far thanks to Tony, the Film Co-op and the membership.
I still turn red every once and a while still but I'm more relaxed and really enjoy being around the members. I do still feel that same magic in the air as I did the first moment I walked into the Film Co-op offices downtown 15 years ago. The Film Co-op, Tony and the members are pure silver screen to me, always have been.
If everybody saw the Film Co-op through my eyes, I think they would see the magic of the people and the community as I see it.
As this grand old institution enters its 31st year, long live the Film Co-op and all of the great past and present provincial members who have stormed its doors with creativity and their collaborative volunteer spirit in tow. A place takes on the aura of the people involved and what an aura we have now.
Get involved and give back to something memorable to preserve film culture in NB. Support your Film Co-op. Don't just take from it please, give back to it on a regular basis and help others and watch the fruits of your labour grow and spread.
