ANNIVERSARY ACTIVITIES - FREDERICTON CULTURAL CAPITAL PROJECTS

Evelyn's Beauty Salon: Fifty Years of Storytelling
(Left - Photo of Michelle)

Directed by Michelle Lovegrove Thomson

80 York Street houses one of Fredericton's long-standing businesses: Evelyn Grant's Hair and Beauty Salon. Established as a business over fifty-years ago, the hair salon itself has been housed in various downtown storefronts, taking up residence at the current location in 1982. Despite the changes over the years, Evelyn has remained the constant centre in an ever-changing roster of shampoos, sets, and stories.

In Evelyn's salon, one senses that the space itself is a character in its own right. Lush hanging-plants dangle in front of vine-print wallpaper; seasonal decorations, handmade crafts, and cross-stitches adorn the walls, and hair-drying chairs still defiantly offer built-in armrest ashtrays. The cross-stitched crafts are gifts from customers and family-members paying tribute to years of excellent service and a genuinely friendly atmosphere. This rich landscape is the backdrop for a ten-minute video portrait that will explore Evelyn's combined business-sense and flare for storytelling.

During regular visits to the salon, it is easy to feel a sense of community emerging. Clients keep weekly and bi-weekly appointments, many of whom have been frequenting Evelyn's salon for years. Adding to the feeling of community and long-standing friendship is the presence of Maureen Sullivan, Evelyn's assistant. Maureen has been working with Evelyn for twenty-seven years, and oversees the salon during Evelyn's yearly winter sojourns to Florida. Evelyn has said that Maureen is in many ways like a daughter to her, and in talking with the two women it is apparent that the feelings of kinship are mutual.

In 1995, Evelyn was inducted into the Association of Atlantic Women Business Owners Hall of Fame. In fact, she proudly displays many plaques, certificates and honours on her walls. In addition to running her successful hair salon, Evelyn is an active member of many business and hairdressing organizations and associations. She is one of the co-founders of the Hairdresser's Association of New Brunswick, having called the first meeting in 1962, and has also served as a volunteer and boardmember for countless organizations, including the Y's Menettes, the Kidney Foundation, Wilmot Church, and was Grand Mistress of the Ladies Orange Benevolent Association.

This short documentary will delve into Evelyn's Beauty Salon as a long-standing business, and will also serve as a portrait of a very charismatic and caring woman who has a lifetime of stories to share.

MIRAMICHI  - A MANIC FILM SHOOT
By Chris Fulton - Writer/Director/Co-Producer of Manic Chiropractic 2.0

Remember 2006? It was a simpler time - gleeful investors snatched up as much sub-prime-backed paper as they could get their greedy little mitts on, and the only means pigs had of harming us was bacon. Also circa '06, as a naive new co-op member, I adapted my NotaBle Acts-winning play Manic Chiropractic into a film script, got a crew together, and started shooting - skipping the tedious step of 'planning'. I was going guerrilla.

Three miniDV tapes later, I had a film that wouldn't cut together, including an ill-advised song-and-dance routine that I chose not to have choreographed until we were all on set. The lesson was pretty clear; plan first, shoot second. The grab-and-shoot approach, though sexy, isn't for the uninitiated.

Fast-forward to the present, my lessons learned and taken to heart, I've got Manic Chiropractic 2.0 in the proverbial can. The path to finally getting this project finished started with the script. The original screenplay was nearly 20 pages long, with many challenging elements (including the afore-mentioned musical number). I slashed mercilessly, and ended up with an 11-page, filmable version. I'd killed my darlings - many of my favourite moments from the script howled for me to reconsider as I highlighted them in Word and threatened to press Backspace. In the end, anything that didn't move the story forward was dispatched.

Getting the cast & crew back together proved much easier. Co-op Filmmakers are a hardy bunch - the talented peeps whose effort I effectively wasted the first time 'round were only too eager to come back. The entire original cast of Josh Linton, Sue Thompson, Dennis Poirier, Andrew Jones, Emily Carter and Mike Mallaley reprised their parts and gelled like before. Crew-wise, Brit Sparrow (P.M./A.D.), Rob Gemmell (Gaffer), Bunthivy Nou (Production Design) and Laura MacInnis (Continuity) all returned. To this stalwart group we added: Danny Thebeau (D.O.P.), Jordan Roherty (Sound Recordist/Mixer/Composer), Terry Oake (Boom! Op.), and Kayleigh Smith (Costumes/Hair & Make-up). Also in need of a shout-out: Allen Galloway (for helping our production design team move furniture) and Kevin Matthews (who secured the friendly confines of the Conservation Council of N.B. for our interior office scenes).

The actual shooting went smoothly; as lights went up and make-up was applied Brit, Dan and myself planned the converage, and the actors were so familiar with their characters that they were ready to roll when the camera was. The RedRock was a blast to work with. We were able to use the narrow depth of field to achieve some good-looking shots. Before long we were on the last shot of the production, Josh was slapped repeatedly on-camera (three takes, just because), and that was a wrap.

Fetal Films (my and Josh's production company - website pending) is really looking forward to screening this at SilverWave, should the stars align and the film be accepted, and hope that this simple tale of a humble chiropractor and his mania tickle the funny bone, or other places where you may be ticklish.

Huzzah!

EMERGENCY FIRST-AID ON FILM CO-OP PRODUCTIONS

I did a workshop recently on Emergency First-Aid for the New Brunswick Film Co-op. Four NBFC members who took it are now going to be certified First-Aiders. They are going to be nationally certified. I volunteered my time for this workshop and didn't mind volunteering because I ultimately benefited from it as well. After a hiatus on teaching, it was nice to start off slowly like this with a mix of people I knew & some that I met for the first time.

For some odd reason, it didn’t seem to matter because like the bunch of friendly people that we are in the membership at the Film Co-op, it didn’t take long for everyone to feel like they have belonged here for a long time.

I adapted the course to cater to what I felt were the needs for the organization. We did the mandatory chapters plus three more that were on medical conditions, environmental illnesses & a secondary survey. I felt they were important as we tend to shoot outside at various times of the year; we also deal with a population that have more medical issues than ever before such as allergies, diabetes, etc. We also sometimes shoot at remote locations & as such may need to transport people to a rendez-vous point.

“The difference between adventure & disaster is preparation” is a quote I recently read. I believe it to be true. I would like to see more people attend these training workshops given by the Film Co-op as I feel that every one of them can help a person avoid disaster. I would like to see more people think safety as well. A great day is when you end your workday with the same amount of digits as when you first started. We are volunteers; we should not compromise our quality of life for any venture.

Directors Guild of Canada signs HISTORIC collective agreement with national film board

Toronto, 2009 –The Directors Guild of Canada (DGC) and the National Film Board of Canada (NFB) are pleased to announce that they have entered into a collective agreement. Sturla Gunnarsson, DGC president, and Tom Perlmutter, Government Film Commissioner and National Film Board of Canada Chairperson, hosted a signing ceremony in Toronto this morning to formalize the new agreement.

“This is an historic agreement, which recognizes the central role a director plays in shaping the creative vision of a film,” said acclaimed director Sturla Gunnarsson. “For the first time, Canadian documentary and animation directors and assistant directors will enjoy the protection and benefits of a comprehensive collective agreement.”

“The National Film Board, probably more than any organization, supports the work of directors,” said Tom Perlmutter. “Over the course of 70 years we have provided the creative and material safe haven that has allowed creators to bring their unique, necessary visions to the screen for the benefit of Canadians. We are delighted to sign this agreement with the Directors Guild, as it will give filmmakers the ability to place all their energies into creation, with a clearer understanding of their working conditions.”

The DGC and NFB are pleased to have reached a deal that respects the NFB’s public service mandate and is equitable for both organizations. “We are hoping to use this agreement as an organizing tool or a template to help other directors in the private sector who do not have union protection,” said Brian Baker, DGC Director of Directors' Affairs.

"A Saturday Affair" tells the story of how Bena Patel brought her samosas to the Saturday Morning Farmers Market and changed the way Fredericton eats on a Saturday morning. It is a revelation of the growth of multiculturalism in Fredericton over the last three decades through the food we eat. This film is part of the Fredericton Cultural Capital Project.

"A Saturday Affair" will be filming on the weekends of July 3-5 July 10-12. We are currently seeking to fill some key crew positions. If you are interested in any of the positions below, or would like to assist in roles not listed, please contact Production Manager Corena Walby at mwalby@nb.sympatico.ca

Positions we are currently seeking to fill:
Locations Manager
Makeup/Hair (able to do 70s looks)
Lighting Technician
Grip

If you love making films, we would love to hear from you! Thank you to all who are already on board, and to all who are interested in helping. Making this film is going to be a lot of fun!
