MANY WELL TRAINED HANDS GET THE JOB DONE ON SET
(Above photo by Jeff Picka - D&D Crew and Cast)
After 4 days of shooting, 24 costume changes, 2 different cities, and more red licorice than should ever be consumed by one person in a lifetime, principal photography for D&D: A Love Story wrapped on Sunday May 16 at 8:00 pm with little fanfare.
Now that I’ve had a few days to decompress, I can look back on the experience with a mixture of gratitude, awe, and pride. I am so thankful to have been able to work with the cast and crew of this short film, and so completely overwhelmed by their tireless energy and enthusiasm for the project.
From the start, I knew I was taking on my most ambitious film to date. With 1980s period costumes as well as a fantasy element complete with blue face paint, weapons, and suits of armor, not to mention more actors and more locations than I’ve ever dealt with before, I was pushing my limits in every way. I knew I’d need the best crew possible to achieve it.
Above all, I need to thank Phil Angers, my director of photography. Thank you for reading my thoughts and thank you for all the rack focuses. You are fantastic!
I also need to thank Corena Walby, my first AD, for being fast on her feet and saving me when we hit our first, and biggest, snag on the first morning. And thank you to the James Joyce Pub for coming up huge for us.
Thank you to my gaffer and my grips and my assistant camera who never stopped working. Thank you to my art department for surpassing all expectations in all areas. Thank you to Jeff and Justin for the thousands of photographs. Thank you to Paul, for keeping us so well fed. Thank you to my sound guys for always being ready to go. Thank you to my production assistants for holding umbrellas and wrangling extras and bringing me coffee.
Thank you Donovan and Paul and Kelly-Jo, for letting us invade your homes, and thanks to the Rainbow Carwash and Laundromat.
Thank you to my cast. It was so fun to watch the characters I had created come to life. You were all exceptional. I owe you big time.
Thank you to everyone who rolled with the punches, kept me moving when the rug got yanked out from underneath me, who stood in the rain for 12 hours because the weather just wouldn’t co-operate. Thank you to those who travelled from Saint John to be extras, and to those who travelled to Moncton and back in one day and then kept working until 4 in the morning. Thank you for telling my story.
This project was truly a labour of love. Despite the weather, and the long hours, and the challenges we had to overcome, we never stopped smiling and never stopped having fun. Why? Because we love making movies.
This independent short film was made possible thanks to the generous volunteer crew and cast and the support and sponsorship of the NB Film Co-op as well as many others who assisted in different ways.

Over the winter months I've been doing a great deal of writing and assisting Donovan Richard in completing the film
Délivrance
that I wrote and had a lead acting role in. Though being very proud of
Delivrance
it is the first step to a feature that I am in the process of writing and as part of the
Great Upheaval untold stories
.
In addition, I intend to film The Report Card , a 5 minute short comedy I wrote featuring child actors, early this summer. Some other things going on: I just came off as crew on Britany Sparrow short film production ( D&D: A Love Story ). On the performance side, I am cast in Denis Sweet's (McLovin) short film Thanksgiving Wishes which is being shot this weekend and lastly, I'm really excited about returning to the stage in the Melodrama/Comedy Spirits on Robinson Court , which is part of Resurgo Redux, a Moncton Museum and the Centre d’études acadiennes in association with the Capitol School of Performing Arts and one of five original scripts in both French and English highlighting people and events that helped make the Greater Moncton area what it is today.
I was excited when I was approached by the director Patricia Leger to play the role of Mr. McSweeney in a play that deals with bootlegging. It was like life in Kent County that I have fond memories of. In the capable hands of the prolific playwright, singer, actress and filmmaker, Patricia with the rest of the cast are shaping this one up to be quite the comedy. I'll be performing along with Tracey Carney (SWFF Best Actor in Comedy), Jason K Roy ( A Dark Radius ), Danny Cormier ( Délivrance ) and other great actors from the community.
The shows for Spirits on Robinson Court are June 12 and 13 (1:30 and 2:30) for both days. Tickets go on sale next week. A bus will take the ticket holders around the city to attend all 5 plays. If you're in town, come join us for some bootleggin' fun.

The short film Délivrance was made possible thanks to the generous support of New Brunswick Film, New Brunswick Filmmakers' Co-operative, volunteer crew and cast and additional supporters and sponsors.

Smack-dab in the middle of big screen superhero season, Tony Sekulich finds himself immersed in the world of super heroes and arch-nemeses. Tony has recently been hired to adapt the superhero graphic novel property Blake Undying into a feature film script. Blake Undying is the property of Zeros2heroes which operates out of Vancouver.
“I’ve always wanted to write a superhero movie and I’m thrilled to have the opportunity to work on this one,” he said. “I can’t reveal too much about it right now but Blake is a misanthrope who is very much a reluctant hero so that is a lot of fun to work with as a writer.”
Blake Undying represents a departure from the feature film screenplay Tony just finished, Dan vs. Darwin.
“I’m really pleased with the way the first draft of Dan turned out. And now working in a different genre is like exercising a different set of creative muscles so I’m enjoying this immensely as well.”
Now that they have completed the treatment to first draft stage on Dan vs. Darwin for Telefilm, Tony and his Azure Sky Films producing partner Lita Llewellyn will turn their attention to moving to the next phase of development for that project.
“We’ve teamed up with Elizabeth Yake of true West Films who has agreed to come on board as our Executive Producer and we are in talks with a top director to sign on as well,” he said. “Our strategy is to start with a strong concept and surround ourselves with talented and successful people and work together to develop a top tier feature film project.”
As exciting as these challenges are, they pale in comparison to the truly daunting task that Tony plans to tackle this summer.
“I need to get my golf game back in shape,” he laments. “Last couple of times out, it just wasn’t there. I’d love to have the superpower of a consistent 260 yard drive – now that would make the world a better place!”

Well, another film is in the can for me. As all filmmaking should be, & this one was no exception, it was a huge learning experience. What saved me this time
was my AMAZING cast & crew. They kept it from becoming a complete disaster as I was learning things on the fly.
It was Bunthivy Nou’s first attempt at DOP, & from my stand point, it will not be her last. She did an awesome job & I highly recommend her. My crew kept us in line & on time. We had a very long shoot day, but as always, everyone was smiling & keen to do their thing. I couldn’t ask for better people to be around with. You guys rock!
My cast did their amazing thing as usual. I honestly don’t understand why filmmakers have to go elsewhere to film when we have the talent pool right here in this province.
As for me, this was a huge learning curve, & I realize how important it is to take the film co-op workshops. I’ve gotten a lot out of them in the past, but I feel it’s still important to take them over & over again as it’s incredible the amount of stuff you think you know.
Cheers,

Website 'most comprehensive' in Canada - Doherty
From the Daily Gleaner by
By MOLLY CORMIER
New Brunswick's Irish heritage was recognized in a big way Monday night at the Provincial Archives in Fredericton.
The New Brunswick Irish Web Portal was launched at an event, which included speeches from representatives of the provincial government, St. Thomas University and the University of Ulster in Ireland.
The portal is an interactive website highlighting New Brunswick's Irish history.
It includes digitized records of manuscript collections, immigration records, newspaper articles and official documents.
Supply and Services Minister Ed Doherty was on hand to launch the site, and announced the portal as a record holder among Irish historical archives in Canada.
"The New Brunswick Irish Web Portal will be the most comprehensive website of Irish-related information assembled in Canada," Doherty said.
"It has already piqued the interest of historians, genealogists and colleagues in New Brunswick, across Canada and abroad in Ireland."
The site also includes searchable databases and exhibits outlining the hardships Irish people faced when immigrating to New Brunswick.
More than 500,000 Irish immigrants had made new homes in British North America by the 1850s, according to information released by the New Brunswick Provincial Archives to mark the launch.
Records such as letters sent from immigrants to family members back home in Ireland are available on the site and provide insight into the history of Irish immigration and settlement in New Brunswick.
"This is an important step in preserving New Brunswick's Irish history," Doherty said.
"The provincial archives allow New Brunswickers to learn about our province's past while looking to future technology to preserve and share important culture."
William Kelly of the University of Ulster made the trip to Fredericton to applaud the website creators for their contribution to Irish-related historical research.
"This technology is on the cutting edge of the future," Kelly said.
"They have made an academic's life much easier, and that's always a good thing."
Monday's event was co-hosted by the Irish Canadian Cultural Association of New Brunswick.
The group's president, Roly McSorley, said New Brunswickers must remember the important place Ireland held in shaping the province.
"The Irish in New Brunswick have basically created this province," McSorley said.
"If you go through the archives - in most of the information provided from all areas of the province - the Irish have been involved in some way."
The New Brunswick Irish Web Portal is available at http://archives.gnb.ca/Irish/IWDP/en/Default.aspx
Alumni Film Co-op member Melynda Jarratt was heavily involved with this very important project along with a team of people.

Dennis Poirier recently submitted a play to NotaBle Acts and received word this week his play will be acted out this summer in the week long festival in late July.
(Photo: Dennis (left) and Chris Nyarady (right) in "To Slay a Dragon" 2009 NotaBle Acts)
"I've acted in a few "Taking it to the Streets" plays, but this is an exciting thrill to have something I've written acted out."
Dennis has acted in two plays written by NBFC member and actor Chris (Maddox) Campbell. (Making the Sale & To Slay the Dragon) and has acted in the film version of Manic Chiropractic , Chris Fulton's play turned short film will be playing in a short film program at the Cannes International Film Festival in France.
Noteable Acts is a sounding board for not just playwrights, but any writer who has the ability to create compelling stories.
The play is called: "The Peanut Butter Formula." It explores the archaic movie script writing formula. A young scriptwriter claims he's found the formula and can insert any scenario into a film and make it successful, including the making of a peanut butter sandwich. Is there even a story telling formula? Dennis now believes the "formula" is the construction of an outline. You can't make a PB sandwich if you don't have bread, a clean knife, a clean table or counter top and of course: Peanut Butter. The bread of any story is the introduction and the climax. Knowing who your heroes are, and how they are going to achieve their goal is the peanut butter. It's up to the writer how crunchy, or smooth, or how thick, or spread out they like their PB. A writer can add sugar, jam or marshmallows, and cut the crust off, but it's still two defined pieces of bread with an awesome middle.
The secret is out: there is NO FORMULA. It's just a sandwich with a beginning, middle and end. Will Harry sink his teeth into a delicious peanut butter sandwich? Find out in July in at NotaBle Acts in
Taking it to the Streets
from Monday to Friday.

FREDERICTON - NEW MEMBER PROFILE: JENNIFER FERRIS
My name is Jennifer Ferris and I am second year UNB student studying Multimedia and Film. I've recently become a film enthusiast and primarily enjoy the production side of film.
I've done theatre all through grade school and was first introduced to filmmaking in a grade 12 through a media course where we would deconstruct films and create our own short film. I continue to do some theatre while at university but I mainly focus on coaching Leo Hayes High School Improv and running F.I.E.R.C.E., which is UNB/STU's improv group. I also am currently volunteering at Rogers TV where I have been getting some basic training with camera and audio what TV has to offer.
I'm new but I'm fast learning and ready to get my hands dirty (so to speak). After I'm done at UNB I wish to pursue a career in film so any and all experience is welcomed, not to mention I love doing this kind of stuff anyways.
So here's to a year filled with film activity.
-------------------------------------------------------
HILLSBOROUGH - NEW MEMBER PROFILE: NGAIRE GENGE
A recent arrival in New Brunswick, Ngaire Genge is quietly enjoying new opportunities to stretch her writing muscles.
Her film background is limited but feels fortunate to have been a working writer for thirty of her forty-five years. Authoring twelve entertainment and pop culture titles, including the New York Times bestsellers The Unofficial X-Files Companion, Urban Legends, and The Forensic Casebook, as well as working as publishing-editor and journalist for the regional weekly 53 North kept her busy in Labrador.
While there, she also volunteered with the regional cable outlet, where she was introduced to producing news and ad copy, experience that proved helpful when 53 North began webcasting evening news in the region in 2004. In co-operation with local theatre companies, she saw three full-length plays produced and also created the audio-video scripts and walking tour scripts for the area’s museum.
At various times, she’s worked in public relations and advertising, including graphic design and the creation of television and radio commercials and campaigns. She and 53 North were delighted to create a nationally-recognized campaign for MADD in 2008. As 53 North was published in-house, she gained seven years of print experience in magazine and special project production. The in-house print shop quickly grew to include production of posters, signage, screen printing, specialty stationary, and engraving - skills and equipment that are finding a home here as an independent business.
Leaving the 24/7 world of independent journalism has opened doors to other writing projects. Ngaire, along with her husband and writing partner, Peter, has finally found more time to turn to screenwriting, completing three long projects this year while continuing to freelance for magazines and polish her next book project. She looks forward to learning the production side of film while in New Brunswick.
A very special thank you to Ngaire who donated a professional paper cutter to the Film Co-op recently!

FREDERICTON - SPECIAL SCREENING EVENT
Wednesday, June 2nd at the UNB Library

What is Descriptive Video Service (DVS) and more importantly, what impact can it have on a growing audience.
Descriptive Video Services, first established by WGBH, a Boston media outlet, is the technique of providing a narrated audio track which helps blind or visually impaired audience better understand movies or television programming. By describing on screen actions, facial expressions, scenery and other visual elements, someone who is blind is able to better enjoy main stream media.
Just as closed captioning for the hearing impaired provided audiences who were deaf with access to main stream programming, DVS has opened a new world for the blind. When closed captioning was first introduced by Julia Child in 1972, advocates would have laughed if someone would have suggested that networks would one day be offering advertizing spots to media buyers. Yet today, without exception, not an hour of main stream television programming is without a message about close captioning provided by ...
Demand for entertainment media by baby boomers and the elderly is unlikely to diminish. As society ages, consumers will demand accessible programming alternatives; and legislators are complying. In Canada, broadcasters are obligated by CRTC mandates to provide 4 hours / week of programming. This will increase as the movement of blind and visually impaired consumers push for more choices.

CALLING ALL MUSIC LOVERS
Looking for volunteer composers and musicians to compose, improvise or perform soundtrack for short comedy film directed by NB film co-op member D.J. Sweet. We're looking for something either jazzy or bluesy... We're imagining a score done entirely by either (1) a solo instrumental (saxophone, clarinet, flute, or jazz piano) or (2) a small jazz/blues band (piano, bass, saxophone, etc. etc.)
If you can play the sax, clarinet, flute or jazz piano or you're in a jazz/blues band email den.sweet@gmail.com to get involved.
If you're interested in composing the score but cannot play any instruments, that's okay. Contact den.sweet@gmail.com anyway and we'll talk.
