30TH ANNIVERSARY MEMBER ARTICLE
Time Goes By: Fifteen years with the NB Film Co-op.
My Introduction to The New Brunswick Filmmakers Cooperative
By Colin A. Smart
FADE IN:
INT. COLIN’S HOME OFFICE - DAY
Colin sits at his computer typing up an article for the Co-op's 30th Anniversary.
"Hello Everyone. My name is Colin Smart and I have been a card carrying member of The New Brunswick Filmmakers' Cooperative for well over ten years now.
During my time with the Co-op; I’ve experienced many things, met many people, have been involved in many projects and worked on many events that I could probably write a book on the subject...but since we already have someone working on that project (Thanks Tim Rayne, Tim O'Neill and Joe Blades) I’ll stick to writing up this article based upon the memory of my first encounter with The New Brunswick Filmmakers' Cooperative.
My actual fifteen year love affair with The New Brunswick Filmmakers' Cooperative began back in May of 1994 as before that time I never knew that the Film Co-op existed.
"How did you get acquainted with the NB Film Co-op you ask?", Well now that is an interesting story and one I am going to relate to you in this article."
(FLASH BACK)
INT. SED CLASSROOM - DAY
April 1994 - Colin Smart sits alone at a table trying to decide where he wants to do his second job exposure placement since his first placement with a garage went so poorly. He looks through a phone book and discovers a phone number for The New Brunswick Filmmakers' Cooperative. Curious he calls the phone number and asks the man on the other end of the phone a few questions.
Colin discovers that the New Brunswick Filmmakers' Cooperative is an organization that encourages and teaches people how to make films in New Brunswick.
Colin thanks the man on the other end of the line for his time and then goes to talk to his job exposure instructor about what he has found out.
INT. KERRY’S OFFICE - DAY
Colin talks to Kerry about doing a job exposure with the New Brunswick Filmmakers' Cooperative and Kerry agrees with him.
INT. SED CLASSROOM - DAY
Colin calls up the New Brunswick Filmmakers Cooperative and makes arrangements with a gentleman by the name of Tony Merzetti to come in for his Job Exposure.
EXT. TONY’S MUSIC BOX - DAY
It is May, 1994. Colin arrives at the doors to The New Brunswick Filmmakers' Cooperative. He hesitates for just a second and then goes inside.
INT. STAIRS THE NEW BRUNSWICK FILMMAKERS COOPERATIVE - DAY
Colin climbs the long narrow stairs up to the hallway outside of The New Brunswick Filmmakers Cooperative.
INT. HALLWAY NBFC - DAY
Colin follows the arrow to the main entrance of the NBFC and he walks into the foyer.
INT. NBFC OFFICES - DAY
Colin Meets Chris Campbell and Tony Merzetti in the foyer of the NBFC. He is greeted warmly by Campbell and Merzetti and he thanks them.
He is given a tour of the facility which takes up the entire upstairs above Tony’s Music Box and he is told he is in the old CFNB Offices. "Wow, he thinks to himself, cool."
After the tour he is shown the Film Co-op library and is given the opportunity to look at Beta and VHS copies of NBFC member produced films.
After watching the films, he is amazed at what he has seen and he wants to know more about the process. He talks to Tony and Chris about this and he is shown different aspects of the filmmaking process.
While he is being shown these things, he is introduced to Errol Williams and Doug Sutherland, two, now alumni members of the Film Co-op. They talk to him about making films. He takes it all in and he is inspired by all of them to try to make his own project someday.
He is shown more stuff on that first day than he is capable of absorbing but he knows that this is what he wants to do as a career.
He spends the next couple of weeks exploring the fascinating world of film production in New Brunswick. At the end of his job placement he vows to one day make his own film.
Little does he know that there is still a lot more to learn and it will take him at least six to eight years before he attempts to create his own independent film project.
But, he has now started on a career path that he will both love and hate but he will always come back to no matter how many other career paths and opportunities he explores.
(FLASH FORWARD)
INT. COLIN’S HOME OFFICE - DAY
Colin sits at his computer typing up an article for the Co-ops' 30th Anniversary.
"And that my friends, is how I started my fifteen year love affair with the lovely lady known as the New Brunswick Film Cooperative. I’m still here and she is still calling to me and when she calls I almost never deny her."
"Happy 30th Anniversary Sweet Lady. Hope you last for another thirty years and more!"
FADE OUT:
The End.

FREDERICTON - ACTOR BUSY ON PRODUCTIONS
"Hi Doris. It's James." Well not really, but Keith Ruttan's most recent actor role as the notorious telemarketer James has given him some recognition around NB. I remember being out on the town at a dance when two people came up to me and asked if I was that guy on the TV commercial. I smiled and replied that they had seen me on a commercial for the NB Securities Commission. As I was returning to my seat I heard, "I told you that was him." The commercial will run again in the Fall on Global Television.
Keith is now hard at work getting ready for BronweN's short drama, "A Saturday Affair" and Bruce Legrow's short comedy "The Kings of Cribbage." Both projects are being shot within the next few months.
Keith says he'll be taking in some more of the Film Co-op training workshops as well to refresh his skills and network.
"It's a great opportunity to meet other creative people and develop/upgrade the skills needed for film productions. I would recommend to everyone to participate in these workshops."

Training & Development
The New Brunswick Film Co-op proudly presents its 2009 annual workshop program!
This year there are workshop programmes in both Fredericton and Moncton . Check out the new schedules at: http://www.nbfilmcoop.com/activities.htm

Composing Music for Film
Film Co-op Training and Development - Coming Up!

Instructor: Jordan Roherty
Location: New Brunswick Film
Co-op, basement resource centre, 732 Charlotte Street, Fredericton
Fee: $20: For Film Co-op Members/$30 For Non-Members
Music is an integral part of any Film or Television project...it tells the audience how they should "feel".
This workshop covers how music compliments and enhances film and video and how to choose the appropriate music style/theme for a project.
Learn what is involved scoring music for film and video...from the Hollywood budget perspective to the indie film perspective. In addition, techniques and approaches to creating scores are discussed, including musical passage timeframes, instrumentation, rhythm, and conveying tension and tranquility. Further recording and post production of delivery music will be discussed as well.
After watching various clips from films, the class will discuss the musical approach used for each film.
INSTRUCTOR'S BIOGRAPHY
Jordan Roherty has been a NBFC member since January 2005. Jordan has scored short films, and won an award for Excellence in Music Composition for his 8-Bit work on “Gamer’s Manifesto,” which screened at SWFF 08.

Instructor: Corena Walby
Location: New Brunswick Film Co-op, basement resource centre, 732 Charlotte Street, Fredericton

First ADs must be authoritative team-leaders and motivators, whilst also being approachable team players. They need exceptional organizational and time-management skills. The ability to plan ahead, trouble-shoot and pay close attention to detail is vital.
Overall, they provide the key link between the Director, the cast and the crew, whilst also liaising with the production office, and providing regular progress reports about the shoot.
The instructor will cover the role of the First AD on smaller independent shoots.
INSTRUCTOR'S BIOGRAPHY
Corena Walby has been involved in film-making since 2004. She first joined the New Brunswick FilmmakersÂ’ Cooperative as an Associate Member when she moved to Fredericton, gradually working on her volunteer hours on some local independent short films, and then moved her way into being a full member, joining the Board of Directors, and also works as the Galas and Events Chair for the Silver Wave Film Festivals.
She has worked on over 15 short films, in many different crew positions (and acting). Her crew positions vary from craft services, continuity/script supervisor, production manager, production designer, to assistant director. May 21 - Territories
A film by Mary Ellen Davis. 2007, 65 min. Filmed in the Occupied Palestinian Territories (West Bank and East-Jerusalem), at the border between Mexico and the United States (States of California and Baja California), New York and Southern Ontario in Canada.
Through Larry Towell's lens...Palestinians form a procession around the coffin of a child killed by Israeli bullets. These are territories in dispute. In Mexico, Mennonite communities resist modernity and retain their culture of peace and spirituality - territories of the soul. Nonetheless, drought and globalization force them into poverty and migration - territories as land. Impassible walls and fences are
built to separate people forbidden territories.

NEW PRODUCTION COMPANY AZURE SKY FILMS QUICK OUT OF THE GATE
A new film and television production company is launching this week with three projects already in the chute. AZURE SKY FILMS Inc. is the brainchild of Tony Sekulich, Lita Llewellyn and Michael Lavigne who came together last fallwith a similar ambition.
“We all wanted to produce top quality material and we felt the best way to do that is to produce it ourselves,” Sekulich said. “I think the reason why we’ve been able to get off to a fast start is we all bring specific skill sets to the team. I’m the content guy, Lita is responsible for industrycontacts/relations and Mike is business development.”
The combined effort is already yielding results beginning with Sekulich’s feature film script Sharkjumping. Azure Sky Films is partnering with Vancouver producer Elizabeth Yake of True West Films to develop and produce that script. True West previously produced It’s All Gone Pete Tong, winner of Best Canadian Feature at the 2004 Toronto International Film Festival.
“Elizabeth is amazing and we couldn’t be more thrilled that she is taking the producing helm of Sharkjumping,” Llewellyn said. “We’re all really excited to be working with her.”
Llewellyn is an accomplished actor who has lived and worked all across the country, including Vancouver, Toronto and Halifax. For her, Azure Sky Films represents an opportunity to help shape the projects in which she will also appear on screen.
“I felt it was a good time in my career to start producing and focus on high caliber projects that will also fulfill me creatively as an actor,” she said.
It was through one of Llewellyn’s industry contacts that they found Elizabeth Yake.
“Elizabeth and I had never met but it turns out we have a mutual friend so we were put in touch and she agreed to take a look at Tony’s script,” she said.
Rounding out the team effort is Michael Lavigne who is responsible for attaching Executive Producer David Scantling. Most recently Scantling co-exec produced the feature documentary Brothers at War with Gary Sinese. This time it was Lavigne who got the script in Scantling’s hands and like Yake, Scantling was keen to come on board.
“Dave has been working some heavyweights in LA for his documentary so when he read the script and said ‘I’m in’ we were extremely pleased,” Lavigne said.
Also in development for Azure Sky Films is the television comedy series Two-Four, created by Sekulich. Last fall while in Toronto, Sekulich and Llewellyn pitched the series to Super Channel. Azure Sky Films is currently developing the series for Super Channel as they work towards acquiring a broadcast license.
“They want to see more scripts for Season 1 and so we are working with them on fine tuning the series and getting it to where it needs to be,” Sekulich said.
Azure Sky Films is also developing another television comedy, The New 20, co-created by Sekulich and a Toronto writing partner Domenico DeLuca. For The New 20, Azure Sky Films is partnering with the Halifax based producing team of Teresa MacInnes and Kent Nason of Sea To Sea Productions. Sea To Sea recently won the Rex Tasker Award for best Atlantic Documentary at AFF and best documentary at the Silver Wave Film Festival for their project Norm.
“I’ve wanted to work with Teresa and Kent for a couple of yearsand when we discovered they were looking to produce a dramatic television series I knew we would make a great team,” Llewellyn said.
For more information on Azure Sky Films and the various projects, please check out their website www.azureskyfilms.com

This is Angela's first feature film and she is working with Cory Haim and Frank Molina in a thriller written and produced by Jackie Giroux.
The Film Co-op's Silver Wave Film Festival fans will of course remember Angela's award winning role in Gia Milani's award winning short film
Bathroom Stalled
.

I let Cory hang with me! Just kidding folks. He is a really good guy and what an actor. He spoke so highly of NB and the talented people living here. He sees NB as a fantastic place with great locations and feels that its potential and provincial talent is underutilized.

PAID LABOUR - CAMERA PERSON WITH EQUIPMENT NEEDED
NYC Film Crew needs cameraperson to shoot the Widows on the Warpath as they go to Ottawa for the documentary GAGETOWN. The Widows have been trying to get their story out of New Brunswick for a long time, and have been speaking with Senator Day for months. He finally came through for them, and they are road tripping to Ottawa on May 31st, they will be there until June 3rd. They are going to protest all over for a couple of days. We really need footage of this trip, but as we are editing right now in NY, trying to get our cut done to make the deadline for Toronto film festival - we cannot make it up there.
We need someone with their own equipment. We have been shooting 24p Anamorphic on Panasonic DVX100b's, and would like to keep it that way, but let us know what you have and hopefully it will work. We would like footage of the drive up there on 5/31, and the protesting on the 6/1 and 6/2. We will pay for a hotel, gas and $200 for the work. It will be an adventure, and you'll be filming the oldest bunch of chicks to go on a road trip.
If you are interested, please contact us at gagetownmovie@gmail.com and we can discuss all the details.
