MY TIME AT CANNES - JILLIAN ACREMAN

My first trip to the Festival de Cannes was everything I hoped it would be. I met so many interesting people from around the world, talked film, screened my short and learned a lot about the industry as well as what I could do next year to improve upon promoting myself and my work. (Above photo by Jesse Anthony - Jill at Cannes)

Some of the highlights? I participated in a "Buyers Breakfast", a morning social pitting filmmakers and buyers in one room and really giving independents the opportunity to talk one on one with buyers from around the world. At a festival where thousands of people are eager to bump into and talk with buyers, I really felt like I lucked out. The ambiance at the festival was amazing. Everyone was so enthused to be present and this created such a wonderful energy. We really got the star treatment at the Short Film Corner closing party! It was the most beautiful setting I could imagine, right on the beach, lots of champagne and beer and finger foods. The women were so beautifully dressed and most of the men wore suits or tuxedos, it was so lovely!

I'm looking forward to going back in the future, and I would encourage anyone else to try and go at least once. I'm so happy I had the chance to experience this! Cheers!

CANNES VIA JEN - JENNIFER CHIASSON

Cannes was wonderful, gorgeous, amazing, glamorous and frustrating! (Photo by Josh Linton  of Jen on bench at  Cannes)

But let me backtrack. I have to say Thank you a million times to Gia Milani and Tony Whalen who helped us survive the Cannes Film Festival. Without them, I surely would've perished. The festival is divided into many theatres, buyers, markets, pavilions, corners etc. Their guidance helped Josh Linton and I navigate the foreign halls! As well, it seemed that there wasn't much useful information as to what one is actually supposed to do at the Short Film corner at Cannes. Ie: put up promo materials, find buyers... HOW to find buyers, screenings, workshops, etc.

It felt to me, that the short film corner was a small nook of fish in a huge oceanic film world, and one that was greatly neglected for the more opulent feature world or as they say Long Métrage.

With Gia and Tony' guidance and introductions, Josh was able to go to good networking events and meet some excellent prospects. I was more so around to be arm candy and drink free champagne. I wasn't all fun and games though as I guarded the hordes of bags carried by our crew so they could easily mingle... I simply asked for a full champagne flute every now and then.

But my time to shine was to come. The ever wondrous NB actress Angela Cullins and I had a night out on the town together where I met more important people in one evening of social event hopping than I did the entire week at the Short Film Corner. The parties are where the buyers hang out.... aha! Now, knowing that, you just need some mad skills to get into the parties. Because, once you're in, everyone thinks you're someone worthwhile and will then give you their attention should you talk them up.

I of course, ran out of business cards, but kept collecting them all night long. Even on the Yacht Party. Yes I said Yacht. It was glorious, and of course my camera batteries were dead by this point. Hopefully my French connections will send me some photos of our illustrious night, as well as Miss Cullins also having collected some photos on her own digital imaging device.

My big word of advice for this kind of thing is either find someone who has an amazing network or learn the mad skills yourself. The parties ARE where it's at to meet the right people. It may be free booze on a Yacht party so, you gotta remember these people can help influence your careers; party but smartly!

Aside from that I'd recommend renting an apartment if anyone ever went again. It was the best thing we ever did. We were within walking distance to the Palais along the Croisette, secure, private, roomy, kitchenette.... parfais.

Make sure to find the time to explore. Going to the festival day in and out, hunting down illusive buyers, talking to the same people, was very monotonous. See the city, check out some shops. It'll help you mentally.

I've run out of things to write. I'm sure I could write more... but I'm at work, and should be working instead. - Le Fin.

NEW MEMBER PROFILE - MONCTON - JOCELINE PACZOSKI

Hi Cat, I just finished shooting Denis Sweet's short film Thanksgiving Wishes in the role as the mom. I met so many wonderful members of the Film Coop during the shoot (BronweN, Bun, Dennis Poirier, Donovan Richard, Danny Thebeau, Michel Guitard, Chris Giles...etc) and they told me so many good things about the Film Co-op...I just had to be part of it.

I was bitten by the acting bug from the moment I performed in my first high school production. I have done several community theatre productions and also was a member of a women's barbershop singing chorus. I took a few classes at the Capitol Theatre in Moncton and it was there that I learned about the audition for Denis Sweet's movie. I auditioned on May 11th and got the part that day! We filmed the movie this past weekend and I must say....I am hooked! It was such an amazing experience. I miss it already. I want to participate in future NB Film Co-op films.

Looking forward to meeting more members

RENEWED MEMBER - SEBASTIAN MACLEAN

Sebastian MacLean is a Fredericton based, producer, actor, writer and web marketing strategist. He began his journey in film in 1993, acting in a NB Film Co-op project for the late filmmaker Errol Williams, titled A Parable In Black & White . That initial experience moved him into a variety of film roles for feature films and shorts, many of which can be found through the internet movie database: http://www.imdb.com

Sebastian's interest in film had him dabbling behind the scenes occasionally, until he decided to produce and star in a feature documentary about his journey in competitive bodybuilding, titled Facing Goliath . That feature aired on televisions around the globe in 160 countries and was followed by his producing of the local TV series Body Quest for Roger's television.

Sebastian has since gone on to produce a variety of projects for local organizations through his partnership at PixaTale Media http://www.pixatalemedia.com , where he continues to act in projects when possible and is currently developing a feature film script, titled Tuff. Development of his feature film has lead him into partnerships with LA and Toronto based stunt and FX teams that developed scenes for 300 , Hellboy ii and Kick Ass among a few. These teams are working together to come up with action oriented film and TV production pitches that fit the evolving production market place.

Part of these efforts to produce content for others and develop his own film projects has lead Sebastian into developing an interest in internet marketing strategies to get projects off the ground. Current efforts are under way to find a volunteer (paid on deferral) web developer to initiate a new film production funding system that Sebastian has developed.

To contact Sebastian about any of the above, you can reach him through www.pixatalemedia.com

FREDERICTON - SPECIAL SCREENING EVENT

Wednesday, June 2nd at the UNB Library
7:00 - 8:30
FREE

What is Descriptive Video Service (DVS) and more importantly, what impact can it have on a growing audience.

Descriptive Video Services, first established by WGBH, a Boston media outlet, is the technique of providing a narrated audio track which helps blind or visually impaired audience better understand movies or television programming. By describing on screen actions, facial expressions, scenery and other visual elements, someone who is blind is able to better enjoy main stream media.

Just as closed captioning for the hearing impaired provided audiences who were deaf with access to main stream programming, DVS has opened a new world for the blind. When closed captioning was first introduced by Julia Child in 1972, advocates would have laughed if someone would have suggested that networks would one day be offering advertizing spots to media buyers. Yet today, without exception, not an hour of main stream television programming is without a message about close captioning provided by ...

Demand for entertainment media by baby boomers and the elderly is unlikely to diminish. As society ages, consumers will demand accessible programming alternatives; and legislators are complying. In Canada, broadcasters are obligated by CRTC mandates to provide 4 hours / week of programming. This will increase as the movement of blind and visually impaired consumers push for more choices.

For more information about this years DVS presentation, please contact:Lui Greco, Lui.Greco@gnb.ca

Sixteen aspiring writers from across Atlantic Canada selected for the 4th PEI Screenwriters’ Bootcamp June 7-11

Bootcamp will be the largest yet

Charlottetown May 20, 2010 -- The jury of the PEI Screenwriters’ Bootcamp is pleased to announce its selection of writers for the 4th annual week-long series of writer development workshops to be held June 7 - 11, 2010 at the Haviland Club in Charlottetown, PEI.

“For us, the best part of Bootcamp is seeing the different reactions and emotions our writers go through and helping them plan to maximize their evolution during their intense week with us,” says Louise Lalonde, Project Manager, Island Media Arts Co-op. “I encourage those who didn’t get in this year to keep working on their writing and apply next year.”

This year’s participants are:
• Prince Edward Island: Kathleen Hamilton, Peter Murphy, Diane Renwick, Susan Rodgers, Julie Pellissier-Lush, Amy Sark and Marlene Campbell
• Nova Scotia: Joe Leclair, Asna Adhami, Sue Carter-Flynn, Stephen MacLean, Benjamin Stevens, and Jamie Feldman
• New Brunswick: Danielle Hébert
• Newfoundland/Labrador: Martine Blue, Julie Whalen, and Irene Duma.

Tom Shoebridge, Founder of the Canadian Screen Training Institute in Ottawa, will be mentoring ten writers regarding their film script ideas (from horror to romance). Jennifer Podemski, writer, actor, and producer for Redcloud Studios in Toronto will be working with
writers on seven projects for both television and the web that run the gamut from children’s programs to drama and comedy series.
Bootcamp is an important rung on the ladder of career development for aspiring writers in this region, says Gordon Whittaker, Regional Director, Business Development and Feature Film Executive -- Atlantic Region for Telefilm Canada.

The program reaches out to new writers across Atlantic Canada, supporting the development of Canadian talent, a key part
of Telefilm’s mandate.

Lalonde says that Bootcamp’s dedicated funders have enabled the Island Media Arts Co-op to provide this unique training opportunity for screenwriters in the Atlantic Region for four years now and the investment is paying off -- Atlantic Canadian writers are finding their
place in our screen-based entertainment industry. Thanks to the Federal cultural investment agency Telefilm Canada, Innovation PEI and PEI Community and Cultural Affairs.

More information about this event is available at www.peiscreenwritersbootcamp.net For
more information, contact: youthinkyoucanwrite@yahoo.ca or call Louise Lalonde at (902) 566-1353.

LIGHTS! CAMERA! LOCAL!
Online video contest offers chance to share passion for food from region

More than ever before, Atlantic Canadians are expressing their love of food from close to home. From farmers markets to home canning to label-checking in the grocery aisles, a new passion for Atlantic food is gripping the region.

The Eat Atlantic Online Video Contest is the chance for Atlantic Canadians to show the world what makes food from our region great. Organized by the region's Co-op stores as part of the Eat Atlantic Challenge, the video contest is another attraction to the popular http://www.eatatlantic.ca website.

All eligible videos will be 90 seconds or less, and a panel of three local food experts will select the best entry from each province. Each provincial winner will receive a $450 multimedia prize pack, which includes an iPod Nano and a 10-inch Dell Netbook computer. Contest entries must be received by August 15, and winners will be announced during the 3rd Annual Eat Atlantic Challenge Celebration, on September 2. Entries also will be posted at http://www.eatatlantic.ca

"One of the most exciting things we have seen through the Eat Atlantic Challenge is how Atlantic Canadians want to share their love of food from our region," says John Harvie, CEO of Co-op Atlantic, which is the wholesaler and service provider owned by Atlantic Canada's Co-op food and farm supply stores. "On the website, at the stores, at community events, they express that they are proud of their commitment and want more people to understand why choosing Atlantic first is so important. This video contest is a new, creative way to share our stories."

The Eat Atlantic Challenge has gained national attention since it began in 2008. Last year more than 4,500 Atlantic Canadians pledged to eat only Atlantic for the day, while the Agriculture ministers for the four Atlantic provinces staged a friendly competition for which province would garner the most pledges. Prince Edward Island was the province with the highest proportion of residents taking the pledge, while Nova Scotians were most numerous in pledging to eat only Atlantic foods for the day.

The Co-op system has always been a committed and integral part of the region's food system. Started more than 80 years ago by farmers in the region, it is the only retailer involved in every stage of food production, from helping with producers plan their crops and products and selling them the items they need to grow their foods, to selling the end products through the Co-op stores.

"Choosing local and Atlantic first is good for our environment, our economy and our communities," says Harvie. "We're all very excited to see what kind of ideas and videos people come up with. Knowing Atlantic Canadians, they will be full of passion and insight, and could lead us toward a whole new level of appreciation for food from close to home."
