Hurray for the Unsung Hero
The Line Producer/Unit Manager/Production Manger
By Colin A. Smart
The job of the Line Producer, Unit Manager, Production Manager is a very important job as without this person the film shoot will not run as smoothly as it should and confusion and chaos can and usually does happen. These crew members are the producer's voice for the production and on the set (even when the producer is also the director). They need to know a little about a lot and have to make tough decisions and are usually the one everyone comes to when a problem happens. Where the First Assistant Director is specifically responsible for running the set, the LP/UM/PM is responsible for everything and everyone else on the production. On smaller shoots one person often carries all three of these job titles.
Below are some of the tasks that these important film crew members have to carry out.
Line Producer - The line producer is responsible for bringing the movie project in on time and on budget. They make most of the spending and logistical decisions on the set. Ideally they help the director get what he or she wants. It’s not their job to be liked as their job is to oversee how the money is spent. On films with smaller budgets or no budgets, the line producer and the unit manager are the same person.
Unit Manager - The unit manager signs most of the cheques and money requests and has intimate knowledge of the production budget. The UM hires and fires crew members, approves schedules, call sheets and production reports. The UM is also usually the spokesperson for the crew or the unit. The UM leads the entire support crew for the actual production team. The UM may also do the job of the location manager if that person is unavailable.
Production Manager - The production manager helps prepare the film’s budget, assists in the preparation of the production to ensure continuing efficiency, ensures that all parties preparing for the shoot are achieving their targets and goals, coordinates and assists in the hiring and firing of all production personnel (volunteers can be fired too!).
Often a thankless job the person who carries the title(s) of, Line Producer/Unit Manger/Production Manger, are an integral part of any production and no production should move forward without this individual. A voice of comfort and guidance is what this person becomes in the chaos and frenzy of a film production whether it is big or small.
So, Hurray for The Unsung Hero oh you wonderful, Line Producers/Unit Mangers/Production Mangers. May you always be there when the filmmaker, crew and cast needs you.
Tip: Filmmakers should not try to be their own production managers, find someone else for this very important role.

ROYALTY-FREE MUSIC
Kirk Smith here. I am a Winnipeg-based composer and owner of a royalty-free music site, http://www.oakstockmusic.com , that could be a great resource for the artists who work with the New Brunswick Filmmakers' Co-operative.
For independent filmmakers, licensing music can be an expensive hassle. http://www.oakstockmusic.com has hundreds of tracks of royalty-free music in dozens of different genres. The tracks we offer are professionally recorded and can be used for themes, music cues, or background.
We add an additional 10-20 tracks every week. At $20 per multi-track
download, we are roughly half the price of other royalty-free music sites. Our composers include professionals from all over the world, with credits on dozens of feature films and hundreds of broadcast television shows.
(We are also actively looking for composers to submit their music to our site.)
I hope you will check it out. If you have any questions, or if you are
looking for custom music, I would be happy to help. Yours, Kirk Smith
