This year there are workshop programmes in both Fredericton and Moncton . Check out the new schedules at: http://www.nbfilmcoop.com/activities.htm

The AD's Role on Independent Productions

Film Co-op Training and Development - Coming Up!

Intro - Theory
May 12, Tuesday, 7pm - 11pm
Instructor: Corena Walby
Location: New Brunswick Film Co-op, basement resource centre, 732 Charlotte Street, Fredericton

Fee: $15 for NBFC Members/$25 for Non-Members

Number Limit: 8

First ADs must be authoritative team-leaders and
motivators, whilst also being approachable team players. They need exceptional organizational and time-management skills. The ability to plan ahead, trouble-shoot and pay close attention to detail is vital.

Overall, they provide the key link between the Director, the cast and the crew, whilst also liaising with the production office, and providing regular progress reports
about the shoot.

The instructor will cover the role of the First AD on smaller independent shoots.

INSTRUCTOR'S BIOGRAPHY

Corena Walby has been involved in film-making since 2004. She first joined the New Brunswick Filmmakers’ Cooperative as an Associate Member when she moved to Fredericton, gradually working on her volunteer hours on some local independent short films, and then moved her way into  being a full member, joining the Board of Directors, and also works as the Galas and Events Chair for the Silver Wave Film Festivals.

She has worked on over 15 short films, in many different crew positions (and acting). Her crew positions vary from craft services, continuity/script supervisor, production manager, production designer, to assistant director. She enjoys all aspects of film-making, and aspires to create her own project someday. In her weekday life, she is manager of Carrier Recruitment at Brunswick News Inc.

Corena hails from Moncton, NB and is married with 2 step-children.

Composing Music for Film - NEW DATE!

Film Co-op Training and Development - Coming Up!
Intro - Theory

May 23, Saturday, 11am - 5pm
Instructor: Jordan Roherty
Location: New Brunswick Film Co-op, basement resource centre, 732 Charlotte Street, Fredericton
Fee: $20: For Film Co-op Members/$30 For Non-Members

Music is an integral part of any Film or Television project...it tells the audience how they should “feel”.

This workshop covers how music compliments and enhances film and video and how to choose the appropriate music style/theme for a project.

Learn what is involved scoring music for film and video...from the Hollywood budget perspective to the indie film perspective. In addition, techniques and approaches to
creating scores are discussed, including musical passage timeframes, instrumentation, rhythm, and conveying tension and tranquility. Further recording and post production of delivery music will be discussed as well.

After watching various clips from films, the class will discuss the musical approach used for each film.

INSTRUCTOR'S BIOGRAPHY

Jordan Roherty has been a NBFC member since January 2005. Jordan has scored short films, and won an award for Excellence in Music Composition for his 8-Bit work on “Gamer’s Manifesto,” which screened at SWFF 08.

He specializes in using Logic Pro for writing and producing music. Jordan recently graduated with an honours diploma in Audio Engineering from the Centre for Arts & Technology. He has recently launched his website (complete with a demo reel of works completed) at www.robotcousin.com

Contact cat at: info@nbfilmcoop.com to register for all workshops please. Workshops can be paid for through PayPal, snail mail or in person, but check to ensure there are seats left before you pay by snail mail or online please.

This year, we are celebrating our 9th year with new programming  and again we’ve waived the submission fee for filmmakers submitting so, it promises to be a good year. Save the dates and plan to attend!

The following items must accompany the application:

FREDERICTON - The Gilbert and Sullivan Society present The Best Little Whorehouse in Texas

wHEN: May 7-9

The Gilbert and Sullivan Society of Fredericton is staging the musical comedy The Best Little Whorehouse in Texas on May 7, 8, & 9, with a nightly 8 PM curtain time at the Tom Morrison Theatre at FHS. Tickets are on sale at the Playhouse box office, 458-8344, or www.theplayhouse.ca (click on Buy Tickets).

The Best Little Whorehouse in Texas is based on the true story surrounding the closure of the Chicken Ranch Brothel, in a small Texas town. In the musical, Miss Mona, played by Erika Nason, is running a clean brothel with plenty of rules and "nothing dirty going on." She has developed good relationships with the local celebrities such as the sheriff, comically portrayed by Tom Whidden; the local Senator (Brent Howe) and even with the Governor of Texas (Jack MacDougall). When Watchdog news reporter Melvin T. Thorpe (Joel Howe) gets involved, the citizens of the quiet little town become caught up with Miss Mona, and the girls of the Chicken Ranch are right in the middle!

The Gilbert and Sullivan Society of Fredericton is a not-for-profit organization promoting amateur theatre in the community. For more information on the production or the Gilbert and Sullivan Society, please contact producer Stacie Cougle at 474-8041.

FREDERICTON *NASTY SHADOWS THEATRE COMPANY STAGES ORESTES 2.1 - a slight modification of an adaptation by Charles L. Mee*

_Orestes_ is an Ancient Greek myth about matricide, incestuous innuendo, the meaning of friendship, and happy endings written by the tragedian Euripides. The story goes: Orestes, driven mad after murdering his own mother for having slept with another man while his father/her husband (Agamemnon) was away fighting the Trojan War, is seeking a way out of town to escape the death sentence handed to him and his sister, Electra. Orestes seems to be willing to go to any lengths to make sure he and his closer-than-you-should-be-with-your sister are able to run free. Luckily for all concerned, Apollo arrives just in time to provide everyone a happy ending before anything truly disastrous occurs (aside from all the death that began the tale).

_Orestes 2.1_ takes this classical story and throws it in the midst of a pseudo-mental hospital with diabolical Nurses, merging modern and classical interests, and allowing characters like Tapemouth Man to share in this story where a happy ending just doesn't look likely.
http://www.charlesmee.org/html/orestes.html

The cast of eleven and the technicians are comprised of local
Fredericton talent.

_Orestes 2.1_ runs May 14th-16th (Thurs-Sat) 8pm nightly @ the Charlotte St. Arts Centre Auditorium.

Tickets available at the door: $12/adult; $8/student.

This play contains mature language and subject matter.

NEW BRUNSWICK'S STICKS AND STONES – WINNER OF THE 2009 SHAW ROCKET PRIZE!!

The heroic efforts of pee wee hockey players both on and off the ice in Sticks and Stones have won this television movie the prestigious $50,000 Shaw Rocket Prize for most innovative and creative Canadian production of 2009 for youth and families!

Produced by Cirrus Communications, QC, and Dream Street Pictures, NB , Sticks and Stones tells the heart-warming story of a Friendship Series Tournament organized by young Canadian hockey players to make amends for the ill treatment received by a visiting American team.

Over 800 students from schools across Canada voted Sticks and Stones the ultimate winner of the 2009 Rocket Prize, choosing from a short list of four exceptional productions (Fred’s Head, How She Move, and Instant Star) selected by an international jury of industry experts.

“It is a great honour to receive the Shaw Rocket Prize,” comments producer, Josée Vallée. “Sticks and Stones sends an important message to all ages, especially the young generations. Therefore, this award is especially meaningful to us, because it is granted by a jury of young viewers.”

The Shaw Rocket Prize congratulates Sticks and Stones, and all of this year’s Rocket Prize finalists. We applaud the tremendous efforts of all of those who work in the Canadian production industry to create consistently great programming for Canadian children, youth, and families.
