NBFC 30TH ANNIVERSARY ARTICLES - DAN THEBEAU
Tim O'Neill: How and when did you first get involved with the NB Film Co-op?
Dan Thebeau: Through a friend producing in Nova Scotia, where I'm originally from; I was learning how to write scripts. He had actually coached me on buying my first camera, a Sony VX2000, and was encouraging me to write and shoot as much as I could. But shoot who, what? I convinced a friend and singer/songwriter to let me shoot a music video for her. Although the experience was fun, it was a disaster, I had no idea what I was doing... but I had a vision and passion. I think it was summer 2004, my friend was busy and I felt terrible about constantly emailing him questions, so I started looking for resources on the Internet. To my surprise I found New Brunswick Film, but couldn't really see how they could help me as a novice filmmaker…but through that research…I stumbled onto the NBFC..... Click here for full article

FROM THE NBFC HISTORICAL VAULT
From the NBFC Historical Vault
is a look at the behind-the-scenes world of NB independent filmmaking from a grass roots perspective. Wonderful, funny and sometimes insane people (some of them Cat's relatives) drop into Cat's office on a regular basis seeking: community, friendship, love, celebrity and fame. Unfortunately Cat has to inform people ongoing that the last two are not possible at the Film Co-op as the socialist co-op environment is more about volunteering and fellowship in film. Not to say it can't happen but it is not the focus of the place.
One of my favorite Film Co-op happenings from the NBFC Vault takes place at the Film Co-op's past location at 51 York Street in downtown Fredericton when the co-op was housed over Tony's Music Box.
It was the early 90's and I was in my office (which had a great view of city hall and any picketers from the Anglo Society). I was working away on my old computer (which kept on crashing) and heard a movement behind me. I swiveled in my chair to face the door and there was a young man standing there; his arms up in the air clutching the doorway frame. He gave a whoop and yelled, "make me a star, I could be the next Brad Pitt, I look like his double." It is true that this man was blond and young but the dominating feature that I could not look away from (much like a car accident) was his left deformed eye. Every time he spoke, I would try to look at his other eye as to not be rude, but my eyes would somehow always wander back to the deformed eye which was on full display.
I can't remember what I said to the young man but luckily because he was only interested in a fast track to fame and fortune in 15 minutes or less, I had totally turned him off before long having mentioned volunteer hours and proper film training. He quickly made his exit.

FREDERICTON - MONDAY NIGHT FILM SERIES
IL DIVO
November 30, 8pm at Tilley Hall, UNB Campus
Director: Paolo Sorrentino
Cast: Toni Servillo, Anna Bonaiuto, Giulio Bosetti, Flavio Bucci
Run Time: 1 hr 57 mins
Country: Music Box Films
Year: 2009
Language: Italian with English Subtitles
Director Paolo Sorrentino's audacious and inventive biopic of Italian parliamentarian (and "Senator for Life") Giulio Andreotti doesn't make the Byzantine world of modern Italian politics any less confusing (non-Italian viewers may want to brush up on the topic beforehand), but the film illuminates, in great emotional detail, important events surrounding an early-1990s investigation in which the perpetual statesman was accused of having Mafia ties. The case was appealed and overturned several times, and Andreotti never served prison time, but it effectively marked the end of his centrist Christian Democratic party and forever changed the age-old relationship between the Mafia and the Italian government.
Sorrentino's fanciful use of titles, quick edits, multiple-perspective flashbacks, slow motion, extreme close-ups, and sublime musical accents--as well as star Toni Servillo's brilliantly stylized acting--convert this airless and sinister piece of world history into a dynamic tale of moral ambiguity and seemingly invulnerable political power. Servillo plays Andreotti as an arrogant, deadpan Puck--an Italian Richard Nixon replete with easily mimicable physical tics and the conviction of his own rightness. In the film's most memorable scene, Servillo allows his ironic veneer to crack just once, in a molten monologue where, spit flying, he justifies "perpetrating evil to guarantee good." Another chilling sequence intercuts a crucial Mafia hit with shots of a particularly tense and triumphant horse race, while a punky blues number roars in the background. Sorrentino's controlled and masterly storytelling won the 2008 Prix du Jury at Cannes.

FORMER NEW BRUNSWICKER WINS EMMY FOR HIV PROJECT
Dr Kwame Dawes, distinguished poet-in-residence at the University of South Carolina, won a News & Documentary Emmy Award for his Web-based project, Hope: Living & Loving with HIV in Jamaica. The awards ceremony was held Monday night in Lincoln Centre in New York City.
Dawes worked with long term Film Co-op filmmaker member Errol Williams on some of his earlier projects and starred in the film Driftwood alongside Williams in the late 80's.
During the last four months of 2007, Dawes, the director of the university's Arts Institute and Louise Fry Scudder Professor of English, made five trips to Jamaica to learn and write about the impact of HIV/AIDS in the country where he grew up.
One result of those trips is the Hope website, which includes poems, photos, video and music inspired by the people Dawes met.
Dawes said the project was a collaboration that he hopes will lead to greater awareness and response to HIV/AIDS.
Dawes, a native of Ghana who grew up in Jamaica, joined the University of South Carolina's faculty in 1995. He previously taught at the university's Sumter campus and the University of New Brunswick in Canada. In addition to his role as distinguished poet-in-residence at the University of South Carolina, Dawes is executive director of the South Carolina Poetry Initiative and the University of South Carolina Arts Institute.
