STEWART MCKELVEY ON BOARD AS SILVER WAVE SPONSOR!
Cat sat down (virtually) recently to talk to Lawyer Andrew Clark about new Silver Wave Sponsor Stewart McKelvey Barristers, Solicitors and Trademark Agents
Cat: Tell me a bit about yourself, your background, where you started and how you ended up where you are now. What do you hope to achieve in film through the company you work at?
Andrew: I am born and raised in Fredericton, spent 15 years away and have been back home for over three years now. My wife Shelley and I have three kids and believe that there is no better place in the world to raise a family than Fredericton. I hope to be able to assist film and television producers with any legal issues they face, in particular with respect to intellectual property protection, licensing, and production financing. While I was practicing law in our firm's Halifax office, I worked alongside the region's premiere entertainment lawyer, Rob Aske, on a number of productions and production financings.
Cat: Do you watch a lot of films? If so, what kind of films?
Andrew: Not as many as I'd like. We are a little time constrained with our three young children so don't get out to the theatres as much as we used to. We rent movies now and then. My wife likes romantic comedies, but I prefer movies with some historical element to them. And anything with Will Ferrell.
Cat: Why is it important for you to sponsor the Silver Wave Film Festival?
Andrew: This is our first year sponsoring - the first of many I hope. We feel it is important to support the arts and this is one of the ways in which our firm does so. In addition, we'd like to let people know that our firm has some expertise in entertainment law.
Cat: What is you biggest pet peeve about Hollywood films, if you have any that is?
Andrew: How much money gets spent on some pretty mediocre films.
Cat: What do you like most about independent films?
Andrew: Generally they focus more on story telling and character development, and on the subtleties that Hollywood tends to gloss over or replace with special effects.
Cat: What do you like least about commercial and independent films?
Andrew: Bad films, be they big budget or independent. There are only so many hours in the day - I hate to waste any watching a bad movie.
Cat: What would you like to see change for the better in the greater film community in NB?
Andrew: More recognition for local filmmakers that tell our stories on film.
Cat: Have you ever wanted to make a film?
Andrew: Not make a film, but would love to write a screenplay someday.

October 25, 8pm, Tilley Hall 102, UNB Campus
PLEASE GIVE
Director: Nicole Holfcener
Cast: Catherine Keener, Amanda Peet, Oliver Platt, Rebecca hall
Run Time: 90 minutes
Country: USA
Year: 2010
Language: English
Distributor: Sony Picture Classics
Kate (Catherine Keener) has a lot on her mind. There’s the ethics problem of buying furniture on the cheap at estate sales and marking it up at her trendy Manhattan store (and how much markup can she get away with?). There’s the materialism problem of not wanting her teenage daughter (Sarah Steele) to want the expensive things that Kate wants. There’s the marriage problem of sharing a partnership in parenting, business, and life with her husband Alex (Oliver Platt) but sensing doubt nibbling at the foundations. And there’s Kate’s free-floating 21st century malaise—the problem of how to live well and be a good person when poverty, homelessness, and sadness are always right outside the door.
Plus, there’s the neighbors: cranky, elderly Andra (Ann Guilbert) and the two granddaughters who look after her (Rebecca Hall and Amanda Peet). As Kate, Alex, and Abby interact with the people next door, with each other, and with their New York surroundings, a complex mix of animosity, friendship, deception, guilt, and love plays out with both sharp humor and pathos. PLEASE GIVE is writer/director Nicole Holofcener’s perceptive—and devastatingly funny—take on modern life’s contradictions, good intentions and shaky moral.

Andrew Johnston is the young star in the short film Magnifier which is screening in Shorts 2 at the Silver Wave Film Festival this year. Check out the full festival schedule at: Click Here
Cat: How did you end up in acting? Have you ever done theatre?
Andrew:
I started with theatre in elementary school and was recommended by my teacher to a casting director.
Cat: Have your parents been supportive of your desire to pursue acting?
Andrew: Yes, they have been supportive and helpful in getting me everywhere I need to go.
Cat: How do your friends feel about your acting?
Andrew: Some like it and some do not, but it has never been a big topic of discussion
Cat: Would you like to take your acting to the next level and study to advance your acting craft?
Andrew: At the moment my studies are my top priority and I have many other extracurricular activities keeping me occupied at the moment. However I want to stay involved with the NB Film Co-op as much as I possible and do as much acting as I can.
Cat: How difficult do you think it is to make it as an actor in the film business?
Andrew: It is very difficult. I think when you get to a certain point you need to commit a lot to acting and make it your number one priority if you want to make it in the film business.
Cat:
How do you prepare for a role, what is your method?
Lots of memorization and review. I wouldn't say I really have a method.
Cat: What has been your most disappointing experience in acting?
Andrew : I have not had any bad experiences. If I don't get a part I don't lose any sleep over it.
Cat: How did you get involved with the film Magnifier?
Andrew: I found about about the film through the NB Film Co-op weekly e-news. I auditioned and was chosen.
Cat: What was the experience like?
Andrew: It was a very enjoyable experience. I was able to work with a lot of great people and I had a lot of fun. Although the days were long and I was quite tired when it was all over I really did enjoy it.
Cat: List your Top 5 films of all time.
Andrew:
In No Particular Order
- Sherlock Holmes (2009)
- The Blind Side (2009)
- Invictus (2009)
- Monty Python and the Holy Grail

APPLY, APPLY, APPLY! OPEN TO ALL New Brunswickers
The sponsors of the MGBA are now accepting TREATMENTS in addition to scripts, and have EXTENDED THE DEADLINE through October 29th, 2010.
Filmmakers, please also note that, while the award is set-up to encourage first-time filmmakers and grow the NBFC talent base, the MGBA sponsors are not limiting eligibility to new filmmakers only - it's but one factor in the decision process.
Information is given below, and will be posted at http://www.fetalfilmproductions.com for reference. Changes are bolded.
Thanks,
Chris, on behalf of the MGBA sponsors
About the award:
The Members Give Back Award (MGBA) was created by active film co-op members Chris Fulton, Josh Linton, Danny Thebeau, and Donovan Richard to fill a funding gap for new filmmakers looking to produce their first short film (excluding any student films the filmmaker may have produced previously). The goal is to aid the NBFC, a film charity that helped the sponsoring filmmakers get their feet wet in filmmaking, in fostering new film talent and growing film culture in NB.
Rules/Eligibility:
The sponsors of the MGBA do not wish to limit eligibility to new filmmakers only, but preference in the selection process will be given to first-time filmmakers.
To enter, filmmakers must submit a properly formatted screenplay or 2-plus page treatment to
info@nbfilmcoop.com
As the script/treatment is to be BLIND JURIED by the sponsors of the MGBA, no contact information should appear on the script itself. Rather, those applying should give their NAME, PHONE#, EMAIL ADDRESS, and whether they are a first-time filmmaker in the text of the email. The only criteria that the jury will use is the quality of the script/treatment and how many, if any, films the applicant has produced for exhibition in a non-student capacity.
Applications will be accepted from October 1st through October 29th.
The Award:
Members Give Back Award ($800.00)
(intended, but not limiited to, first or second time Filmmakers)
• $200 in workshops/training from the New Brunswick Filmmakers’ Co-operative (2011)
