The 9th Silver Wave Film Festival Announces Line-up
Fredericton, NB-The 9th Annual Silver Wave Film Festival, November 5-8, 2009, announced its line-up of films and special events. Over 110 films from New Brunswick, the Atlantic region, across Canada, and around the world will grace Silver Wave screens this November.
"This year, as we celebrate the NB Film Co-op's 30th anniversary, we are entering a new chapter of the Festival, " says NB Film Co-op Executive Director Tony Merzetti. "The Festival is about the love of cinema and we know that our audience will find something to love at Silver Wave this year."
The opening gala screening is the NB feature film American Sunset, written and produced by Jacqueline Giroux, and shot in Fredericton, Moncton and other areas of NB. The screening will take place Thursday, November 5th at UNB.
On Friday, the festival will present a gala screening at Le centre Communautaire Sainte-Anne of several short films commissioned by the Co-op about Fredericton's rich cultural history. It is one of the projects supported by the City of Fredericton this year as a Cultural Capital of Canada project.
The screening will include films about Patel's samosas, the Chestnut Canoe, Francis Sherman, Oscar Wilde, The Lights of St. Mary's, Evelyn's Beauty Salon, Gabe Acquin and the Exhibition Palace. The screening will be followed by the NB Film Co-op 30th anniversary Gala bash.
The festival also includes a plethora of short dramas and comedies, documentaries, animations and experimental films culminating in the Silver Wave Awards presenting 22 prizes including the prestigious NB Joy Award valued at $17,000 and the CBC 3-2-1 Award valued at $25,000.
In total 64 New Brunswick made films will be shown. The festival has added new programmes this year including a special emphasis on young filmmakers. There will be a youth programme of films made by filmmakers under 15, and 2 programmes of films made by high school and university students. The quirky and contagious midnight screening program is aptly themed this year: Gore, Guns, Bad Behaviour & Black Comedy.
The festival has really put an emphasis on short films this year, but has some great features as well including: Cairo Time, Amreeka and In the Loop. There are lots of free documentaries to see on Sunday as well.
For those looking for professional development, there is an all-day scriptwriting workshop on Saturday as well as a scriptwriting super panel organized by Women in Film and Television - Atlantic. There are also several one-on-ones with key industry people available.
No festival would be complete without parties and every night there will be opportunities for festival-goers to rub elbows with filmmakers and celebrities.
The 9th annual Silver Wave Film Festival takes place November 5-8, 2009, in Fredericton, NB.

Join award winning New Brunswick filmmaker Gretchen Kelbaugh in conversation with Louise Lalonde, Tim Hogan, Tony Sekulich and others. All who have worked with screenwriters or have a body of work as screenwriters themselves.
Gretchen will ask the questions that writers too often don’t have the chance to ask: What opportunities are there to develop screenwriting skills? What can a writer do to improve the chances of their work being produced?
What do producers look for in a writer beyond just a good idea? Is it possible for a writer to apply for development $ to write a script? When should a writer link up with a producer? When should a writer work with a story editor? How do you get your script to a producer? Can a writer approach a Broadcaster with an idea? When should a writer pitch their idea? What elements should a writer bring with them to pitch their idea?
Come join us in this lively interactive discussion during the Silver Wave Film Festival in Fredericton. For more information please contact Pamela Lovelace, creativepam@gmail.com or visit www.wift-at.com

Cast: Hiam Abbass, Ali Suliman, Rona Lipaz-Michael, Doron Tavory
Run Time: 106 minutes

Year: 2009

Salma Zidane (Hiam Abbass), a 45 years old widow from a small Palestinian village in the West bank, finds herself at war with the Israeli Minister of Defense (Doron Tavory) who built his house on the green line border between Israel and the occupied Territories on the edge of Salma’s lemon grove. soon enough the Israeli security forces claim that the grove is a threat to the safety of the minister and issue orders to uproot the lemon trees. salma, whose son is in America and daughters live far away from her, decides to fight for her trees.
She embarks on a legal journey all the way up to the Israeli Supreme Court. Salma is joined by a young Palestinian lawyer, Ziad Daud (Ali Suliman), who fights against a wall of clever military lawyers who have the backing of the government. Ziad, 34, divorced from a Russian woman he met while attending law school in Moscow, falls in love with Salma. Their love affair is a complicated and dangerous one as Palestinian widows are not free to do whatever they like, certainly not fall in love, certainly not with younger men…
Salma realizes that she has inner strengths that allow her to continue her lonely quest, despite the pressures put on her from both sides – Israeli and Palestinian. Salma is fighting for trees that were planted by her father over 50 years ago, trees that have absorbed blood, sweat and tears like the whole region. She will not let them be cut down just to satisfy absurd security requirements.
On the other side of the grove, Mira Navon (Rona Lipaz-Michael), the Minister’s wife, is also undergoing a major change in her life. After fulfilling her duties for so many years, and despite the new house and her husband’s new and powerful job, she feels unhappy. The clock is ticking away and there must be more to life than her share so far. The events around her invisible new neighbor gradually raise her awareness of her husband’s approach to the whole affair, and she finds herself defying what is expected of her. A bond is created between the two women, each of them discovering a new life ahead of them, each in her own territory, across the deep border between them.

Lionsgate Teams With Massify in Pioneering Project to Access Online Community for Feature Film Development
Lionsgate Teams With Massify in Pioneering Project to Access Online Community for Feature Film Development
SANTA MONICA, Calif. and VANCOUVER, British Columbia, Oct. 20 /CNW/ -- Lionsgate (NYSE: LGF), the leading next generation studio, and Massify, the largest online film production network, today announced they have formed an innovative partnership to tap into the massive pool of online creative talent and develop groundbreaking feature film projects. The Lionsgate Incubator Project, dubbed "LINC", will enable Lionsgate to work with Massify's growing talent pool to develop original film ideas with the ultimate goal of parlaying them into feature films or shorts using Lionsgate's development and production
resources.
The first project, launching later this year, will produce a high-concept, male-driven comedy short that the studio expects to subsequently develop into a feature length production. The comedy short/pilot will be based on a user-generated script, and a director, cast, and crew will subsequently be attached through Massify's online network, with Lionsgate's feature film development team providing input throughout the process.
"There is a revolution of new ideas in filmed entertainment online," said Curt Marvis, President of Digital for Lionsgate. "We intend to be at the forefront of accessing this enormous and largely untapped source of fresh talent and original new voices. Just as we are always looking for ways to monetize our content in a broadband environment, we are equally committed to using new media platforms as a source of new content. Massify's large and talented community of filmmakers make them an ideal partner to bolster our online initiatives."
"We're thrilled to be working with Lionsgate, which has already established itself as the leading next generation studio and an innovator in finding new ways to deliver content to its consumers in a digital world," said Massify CEO Geoff Pitfield. "We have great expectations for the partnership between the cutting edge voices of our users and Lionsgate's bold vision, feature film expertise and development, production and marketing prowess."

In my dotage I have decided to cause a website to be created. I feel it is somewhat arrogant, but one must go out with a bang and be contemporary, though my work is somewhat Retro. And I have also discovered a great webmaster in Lee Pidgeon.
