NBFC MEMBER'S FATHER COMES ON BOARD AS SILVER WAVE SPONSOR FOR 2010

Cat sat down (virtually) recently to talk to new Silver Wave Sponsor Gary Guitard. Gary is Michel Guitard's (NB Film Co-op Technical Director/Filmmaker) Father and supporter.

Cat: Gary, tell me a a bit about yourself, your background, how you ended up in the business you are in?

Gary: I was originally born and brought up in Campbellton, NB. I am the second child in a family of four boys. It's funny how things turn out as now I am the father of three boys and no girls, full circle. I am very happily married to my wife of 24 years, Denise (who is a member of the Film Co-op) and have 3 great kids, Michel (21), Allain (18) and Gabriel (12). I currently work as a self-employed relief pharmacist which keeps me extremely busy. I started doing relief 10 years ago after running a major Pharmacy Franchise in Minto and Chipman for 15 years. I always knew I wanted to be a community pharmacist. I got that bug after babysitting for a pharmacist owner's children in my early teens. I have always been very self motivated so I went after my dream. On my time off I enjoy being with my family, doing the yard-work and enjoy being involved in my children's sports  and other activities. Minor Hockey and filmmaking have been a very big part of our family's time since moving to Fredericton.

Cat: Do you watch a lot of films? If so, what kind of films? Do you have the same taste as Michel in films?

Gary: I am a huge movie fan! I'd like to share a little story as to perhaps how Michel and for that matter Gabriel have developed such an interest in filmmaking. We lived in Minto on Grand Lake. In the winter there wasn't much to do, so we rented movies to the tune of 5-6 movies per week. Denise and I did not sensor the kids from any movies so they were exposed to everything we ourselves watched. I liked watching action, thriller type movies and Denise liked love stories and comedies. Our kids watched all kinds of films so they love movies. As to having the same taste in films as Michel, no. I believe he has a much broader taste appeal than me, more eclectic!

Cat: What benefits do you see coming out of partnering with the Silver Wave Film Festival each year and why do you think it's important to support the Festival?

Gary: It is my hope that by sponsoring the Silver Wave Film Festival it will show other business owners that are not related to the movie/filmmaking community in NB to consider doing so in the future. We are so lucky to have this festival here in New Brunswick. I have watched its growth from the very first festival to now and wow! I just can't wait for the next one. The benefits are not for me. The benefits are for filmmakers in New Brunswick and for that matter the Maritimes. The benefits are also for Fredericton and the culture in the city. I cannot wait for a future when New Brunswick will be the benefactor of major movie productions on an on-going basis. These productions spend millions making films, and all businesses in the province would benefit. So, I encourage others to consider helping support this Festival. We have a perfect backdrop in New Brunswick for story telling. Dream big, think big and grow big! It can happen-we just need to share the dream.

Cat: what is your biggest pet peeve about Hollywood films, that is, if you have any?

Gary: I personally do not have any. As a Canadian I'm a little jealous that our film industry is not as well developed as the Americans. We need more Canadian Film companies. Lets face it, they (Americans) know how to promote themselves and the have the money to do it. I hope we can get there someday. If I had to make any comment it might be that Hollywood is too big, too expensive and restricts the playing field to those with deep pockets.

Cat: What do you like most about independent films?

Gary: The stories. Many are about us, our culture and what and who we are! it is also encouraging to see that the filmmakers and storytellers are all very young. This is very exciting for the future of the film community and industry at large here in New Brunswick

Cat: Are you disappointed that Michel didn't stay in pharmacy and dropped out of university to work in film full-time?

Gary: My answer is not the same today as it was 3 years ago. Phamarcy has been good to my family and I. It is a profession that is high in demand all over North America and the pay is good. Michel is also very smart. It was my hope he would get a degree for stability of income and then make the movies as more of a hobby. But, when he went to University he was not there! He had great marks considering the classes he missed due to filmmaking. I had a good friend of mine that changed my thinking on Michel's decision making. He told me Michel has a "PASSION". How many teenagers do you know have this in grade 12? When you have passion for something you have to follow it. It is the only way to fulfill a dream or desire. I forgot this because I had the same passion about pharmacy. Make no mistake, I truly am happy for him and am doing everything to help. He is very good at what he does. Lets remember he has been schooled in filmmaking by the NB Filmmakers' Co-operative since the age of 10. I'm so happy for him and his career path.

Cat: Could you list your top 5 films?

Gary:

1) Dirty Harry (Clint Eastwood)
2) The Bourne Identity (Matt Damon)
3) Lethal Weapon 1,2,3,4 (Mel Gibson)
4) Die Hard 1,2,3,4,5 (Bruce Willis)
5) Star Wars 1,2,3,4

Location Sound with an Industry Specialist

The instructor has kindly donated his fee back to the Co-op for this workshop

Tod Bovingdon , New Brunswick Filmmakers' Co-operative & Tyler Wade, Trew Audio in Toronto - http://www.trewaudio.com/

Intro - Theory and Hands-on
October 9, Saturday, 1 pm - 5 pm
Instructor: Tod Bovingdon
New Brunswick Film Co-op, basement resource centre, 732 Charlotte Street, Fredericton

THIS WORKSHOP IS NOW FREE!!! WE CAN ONLY TAKE A LIMITED NUMBER SO PLEASE REGISTER TO ENSURE YOU GET A SEAT.

(Required Workshop for members who want to do sound on film &  video projects through NB Film Co-op)

Number Limit: 10

A hands-on workshop for anyone interested in doing effective sound recording on videos and television shows. Participants will learn about location sound, and the troubles and tribulations that go along with trying to have perfect audio in the midst of whirling fans, beeps and bumps.

This workshop will certainly be of interest to sound recordists but will also be instructive to directors and DOP/camera operators as well as any other department. Filmmaking is a 'team sport' and all departments would do well to learn how all the members of the team work so that, together, the product is better. Studies have shown that, with today's prevalence of YouTube video and its counterparts, the viewing public has come to accept shaky, grainy, blurry and sub-par images as the norm (and even a stylistic decision) but those same viewers will tune out and turn off any program that has poor, scratchy or missing audio! Truly, it has now come to pass that the image exists to support the audio and not the other way around as previously thought and this has made the task of the sound recordist getting crisp, clean sound that much more important.

INSTRUCTORS BIOGRAPHY
Tod Bovingdon hails originally from Fredericton, NB and has been recording sound professionally in Toronto since the mid-Nineties. His main focus is long-form adventure documentaries ("The Devil's Brigade", "Destination Nor'Ouest") but has recorded everything from children's programming ("This is Daniel Cook") to youth stunt shows ("The Adrenaline Project") to improvisational comedy ("Punched Up!"). In between he has recorded sound for commercials, sports, pressers, scrums, red carpet, junkets... You name it, he's probably done it.

Tod is an alumnus of the New Brunswick Filmmakers' Co-operative ("Colours of The Wind" "The Vacationers" "Driftwood" "A Darker Side" "Echoes in The Rink - The Willie O'Ree Story") and credits his NBFCO experience with giving him a solid grounding in filmmaking, the necessary set-discipline and a no nonsense work-ethic that made his transition to the huge Toronto market a smooth one.

Tod returns to the NB Film Co-op to instruct a sound workshop, because he feels it is vitally important to 'give back' and to train filmmakers on the importance of sound in film.

October 11, 8pm, Tilley Hall 102, UNB Campus
THE KIDS ARE ALL RIGHT
Cast: Annette Bening, Julianne Moore, Mark Ruffalo
Run Time: 106 minutes
Country: USA
Year: 2010
Language: English
Distributor: Focus Features

The most talked-about movie at the 2010 Sundance Film Festival, and the winner of the Teddy Award for Best Feature Film at the 2010 Berlin International Film Festival, THE KIDS ARE ALL RIGHT is directed by Lisa Cholodenko (HIGH ART, LAUREL CANYON) from an original screenplay that she wrote with Stuart Blumberg (KEEPING THE FAITH). The movie combines comedic surprise with poignant emotional truth in a funny, vibrant, and richly drawn portrait of a modern family.

Nic and Jules (Annette Bening and Julianne Moore) are married and share a cozy suburban Southern California home with their teenage children, Joni and Laser (Mia Wasikowska and Josh Hutcherson). Nic and Jules – or, when referred to jointly by Joni, "Moms" – gave birth to and raised their children, and built a family life for the four of them. As Joni prepares to leave for college, 15-year-old Laser presses her for a big favor. He wants Joni, now 18, to help him find their biological father; the two teenagers were conceived by artificial insemination.

Against her better judgment, Joni honors her brother’s request and manages to make contact with "bio-dad" Paul (Mark Ruffalo), an easygoing restaurateur. The kids find themselves drawn to the confirmed bachelor’s footloose style – especially in contrast to Nic, a principled doctor who has long established their house rules. Jules, who has been looking to start a new career in landscaping, also strikes up a rapport with Paul. As Paul comes into the lives of the forthright four, an unexpected new chapter begins for them as family ties are defined, re-defined, and then re-re-defined.

SAD FARWELL TO MONDAY NIGHT FILM SERIES MEMBER & FRIEND

St. Thomas University philosophy professor Leo Charles Ferrari, son of Leo Francis and Millicent Josephine (Müller) Ferrari, was born in Bathurst, New South Wales, Australia on 8 December 1927. He received his early education at St. Patrick's College (Christian Brothers' Colleges), Strathfield, later graduating with a B.Sc. from the University of Sydney in 1948. For seven years he worked as an industrial chemist and studied medieval philosophy at night. In 1955 he emigrated to Canada to commence advanced studies in philosophy at Laval University, earning a L.Ph. and Ph.D. in 1956 and 1957 respectively. Following graduation, Ferrari accepted a position as lecturer with St. Mary's University, Halifax (1957-58) and later as assistant professor with Mount St. Vincent University, Halifax (1958-61).

Ferrari began his 34-year association with St. Thomas University in 1961, joining the faculty to lecture in philosophy. In 1964 he relocated from Chatham to Fredericton when St. Thomas moved into new facilities on the University of New Brunswick campus. Active on a number of university committees, he was the first chair of the Executive Committee of St. Thomas Faculty Association (1965), later renamed the Faculty Association of the University of St. Thomas (FAUST). In 1970 UNB appointed him Honorary Research Associate of the Graduate School, and a year later St. Thomas elevated him to the rank of full professor.

Recognized internationally as an authority on Augustine of Hippo, Ferrari published over 35 works on the 5th-century bishop-philosopher and presented a number of academic papers on him at conferences and conventions. In 1982 he was invited to deliver the annual Saint Augustine Lecture at Villanova University, Villanova, Pennsylvania. A substantial work, Concordantia in libros XIII confessionum S. Aurelii Augustini, the first published concordance to the Skutella text, was published jointly with Rodney H. Cooper, Peter M. Ruddock, and J. Robert Smith in 1991. Ferrari retired from university teaching in 1995. At spring convocation 1998, he will be named first professor emeritus of St. Thomas University.

Outside scholarly pursuits, Ferrari took an active role in the community, sitting on the executive committee of several societies and organizations. For a number of years he served as president of The Flat Earth Society, an organization dedicated to renewing "faith in the veracity of sense experience," which he helped found. In addition, he wrote several articles for the New Brunswick Human Rights Commission on the subject of racial discrimination. He also acted as president of both Grosvenor Park Home and School Association, Halifax (1960-61) and Kingsclear Home and School Association, York Co., N.B. (1964-67), and he chaired the Centennial Committee for the New Brunswick Home and School Federation (1965-67). For several years, Ferrari was an exhibiting member of the Fredericton Society of Artists.

His wife is Lorna E. Drew.

SAINT JOHN - Marco Polo: The Musical rehearsals are underway

Last Sunday the full cast, choir and orchestra met at the Denis Knibb Auditorium to rehearse the musical creations of local composer, Richard Kidd. The musical pieces are original works that have been created specifically for this production and have never before been heard by audiences. “Today was one of the most inspiring days of rehearsal that I have ever spent in my close to 30 years of working in theatre” notes Stephen Tobias, Director of the production. “Hearing this sweeping, epic score come to life at the Saint John High School theatre today was, quite simply, magic.”

Marco Polo: The Musical is an original work written by Saint John native Mark Blagrave. The play follows the story of several individuals whose lives are tied to the Marco Polo ship from her construction and launch at Marsh Creek in Saint John to the record breaking trip from Liverpool to Melbourne that earned her the reputation of “The Fastest Ship in the World” to her final resting place off the coast of Prince Edward Island.

The George Street Blues project is looking for a singer. GSBP is a
well established Fredericton blues band that has been on the music
scene for about 8 years having played at venues and festivals in New

guitars, bass, harp and drums and plays a variety of traditional and
Chicago style blues, R&B classics and some original material.

The singer can of course be male or female and need not have vast band experience. They can play an instrument-or not.
