MOVIE MESS ONBOARD AS NEW SPONSOR FOR SWFF 2010
Cat sat down (virtually) recently to talk to the men at Movie Mess. Movie Mess is a community focused free publication that reviews film, announces community events, and contains advertisements from local businesses.
Cat: Tell us a bit about yourselves, your backgrounds, how you ended up in business together and what you hope to achieve with this business?
Curtis:
I grew up in Fredericton, attended FHS and UNB and graduated with Business and Education a year ago. I went to the Cayman Islands last winter for a teaching position, (middle and high school US history, physical education and health). I'll be teaching in Fredericton this fall.
Mark: I’m a born Newfie, but my family moved to Fredericton 18 years ago. I graduated from FHS in 2003 and then STU in 2008 with my BA in Media Studies.
Before there was Movie Mess, there was another company under different management that basically did the same thing we did. We both were involved with this company, Curtis as the director and myself as a casual volunteer employee were looking to keep busy and get some experience while I was not working full-time. The previous company did not work out so Curtis created his own business.
Previous to this, I had left to pursue a full-time interest which also did not work out, so I agreed to again work with Curtis and help him out with his new company. Things have taken off very well since then and each day things continue to look brighter and brighter. Myself and Curtis got into this as a fun side project as it is something we both equally enjoy doing. We now hope to achieve several things: We want to be actively involved within our local community and help small Fredericton businesses gain exposure while flourishing in business without having them pay an arm and a leg. One day, we also hope to see a Movie Mess franchises start up in neighbouring cities and perhaps across Canada.
Cat: Do you both watch a lot of films? If so, what kind of films?
Mark: I not sure I would say I watch a whole lot of films, but I do view them on a regular basis. I like to watch a wide variety from comedy, to horror, action, thriller and sci-fi. I'm not a fan of dramatic films however; there is enough of that in real life. :)
Curtis: I watch an average amount of films I would say...nothing too serious. Mostly Hollywood... exited to learn more about the independent sector though and the Film Co-op and Silver Wave!
Cat: What benefits do you see coming out of partnering with the Silver Wave Film Festival each year
Curtis:
I enjoy learning new things about what is going on in NB, so I hope to learn much from the festival as well as the Film Co-op throughout the year.
Mark:
The Silver Wave Film Festival is a wonderful event that has many highly respected and reputable supporters and sponsors. Myself and Curtis are delighted to be one of those sponsors even without the benefits of networking that this opportunity will bring us. I think that this is a great way to meet other people from our provincial and national community while meeting new friends and potential business partners.
Cat: What is your biggest pet peeve about Hollywood films, if you have one that is?
Mark: I have a few of them right now. But I think the biggest would be how they have these enormous budgets and the money gets spent on marketing, advertising and all these special effects that don't always look that great compared to the older films. This wouldn't be that big of a problem if they didn't forget to focus on things like scriptwriting, character development, good acting and a reasonable storyline.
Cat: What do you like most about independent films?
Mark: I love how independent films are not watered down by enormous budgets and other things I had listed as my pet peeve. I think independent films allow for true talent and creativity to shine its brightest when a lower budget allows filmmakers to concentrate on the shear talent of the whole crew and not just CGI, marketing and nudity.
Cat: Have either of you ever wanted to make a film?
Curtis: (smiles) I have made a few low budget flicks with a standard camera. Mostly just for laughs. If you add me to facebook you can check them out: Curtis McCarthy
Mark: Yes, I have always had an interest in making films. I can remember a few years back when I was in university I made a very simple film that criticized the Bush administration and the war in Iraq. It was certainly one of my fondest classroom memories, seeing the class watch it and the emotion it stirred up within them.
Look for the Movie Mess Publications leading up to and during Silver Wave this year! Available at the Film Co-op starting in October and at another local businesses in Fredericton.

ST. ANDREWS FILM FESTIVAL - THAT'S A WRAP!
Last weekend was the first annual Saint Andrews Film Festival which screened a total of 15 films. On Friday night the opening film that played was titled "Calvin Marshall" starring Steve Zahn, Alex Frost, and Michelle Lombardo and got a great response from a crowd of people that were from all over the continent from Toronto, to New York, Florida and beyond.
The next day was questionable as the threat of Hurricane Earl was upon us but lucky for us it turned out to be just a bit of wind with some heavy rain at times, and then cleared up to be a nice sunny afternoon just in time for the double documentary matinee that was showing 2 films one about Nova Scotia Surfing the other about the fishing in Port Clyde, Maine. After the documentaries played the feature film
The Backup Man
was shown which is a film produced in NB and Quebec. The crowd was delighted to find out that the director of the film, Film Co-op Alumnus Doug Sutherland was in attendance.
Then, it was onto the
Short Film Screenings
that had films from all over the world showing and had a good turnout of people attending including the filmmakers from NB who had their films playing in the program (Magnifier, Délivrance and The Dance
). All the films were well received with some of the audience afterward even commenting on what a great selection of films there was, which as an organizer is a great thing to hear. After the screening everyone headed
down to the Shiretown Pub for the official after party to have some refreshing beverages and talk films.
Sunday was the last day of the festival where we screened the documentary Pond Hockey in the evening and later that night was the closing film Machotaildrop . Overall even with the threat of a hurricane, the festival was a success and it wouldn't have been possible without the help of the volunteers, sponsors and everyone who came out to watch the films.
It was a blast see you next year!
Festival Organizer, Jesse Anthony

The Arts
FREDERICTON MONDAY NIGHT FILM SERIES TO START LATER NOW
Monday Night Film Series Screening Cancelled for September 13th
Due to circumstances beyond our control, we have been forced to cancel our upcoming screening of THE KIDS ARE ALL RIGHT on Monday September 13th. We are disappointed to have to delay the launch of our screening series in the newly renovated auditorium (Tilley 102). We are looking to reschedule the film during the term.
Regarding the 35mm projectors, we are having the electrical system rebuilt to meet safety code regulations and expect the work to be completed in the next day or so. A new ventilation system is being installed over the next week to provide cooling for the projector lamphousing and once the projectors are operational, we will be able to hook up the sound system and test everything prior to our showing of THE GIRL WHO PLAYED WITH FIRE on Monday September 20th.
Thank you for your patience and we look forward to seeing you at the movies.
Tony Merzetti, Executive Director, NB Film Co-op

Picaroons Traditional Ales & the NB Film Co-op's Silver Wave Film Festival Presents
"FILMS ON TAP"
Picaroons Traditional Ales, NB Film Co-op and the Silver Wave Film Festival want to take you on a cinematic booze cruise, raising a glass to the best NB indie film clips that show the seductive chemistry between the magical elixir we call beer and great short original films Imagine if the Persian Poet Hafiz had said instead "Give me beer, that I may for a time forget the cares of the world," instead of 'wine'.
The cinematic libation has a long and glorious history, while the slipping of a fine beer has become, for many of us, an essential accompaniment to movie viewing. This needs to be celebrated more; much in the same way wine is celebrated constantly in films.
The lulling yet exciting properties of both beer and film make them ideal companions. Both depend as much on mood as on any tangible properties to delight and entrance us. Spring forth oh most noble beer drinking or beer loving filmmakers. Let us raise beer to the same heights that wine has enjoyed since the beginning of time.
We don't want a beer AD please, we want a short film that tells a story which includes beer and we are not against beer being the star, a supporting actor or a bit player….just include it in some way. It can be subtle or in your face.
Deadline for Film/Video Submission: Friday, September 24, 2010
Winning Film Award Announcement will announced shortly after at a special screening event, of all short films submitted, at the Garrison District Ale House in downtown Fredericton.
The Garrison District Ale House opened to rave reviews in November 2008. The Garrison, as it has become known, is committed to providing a casual, classy atmosphere, with New Brunswick's largest selection of specialty beer.
With great beer from around the world, The Garrison is committed to finding the best beer around and bringing it to your table. They also have a selection of Belgian Beers, American Craft Beers and last but never least Picaroons Beers.

SACKVILLE - Sites for Seeing: Out of the Cineplex and Into the Marshland
Sept. 17 & 18
rides leave from Struts at 7pm
events begin at the Carriage Factory at 7:30pm
Faucet Media Arts Centre & Struts Gallery are pleased to present the final installment of Sites for Seeing: Out of the Cineplex and Into the Marshland -- the last two in a series of four outdoor experimental film screenings in the Tantramar marshes.
On Friday, September 17, Mike Hoolboom will be presenting an award winning documentary film by Deborah Stratman called O'er The Land. On Saturday, September 18, Solomon Nagler will be presenting Blissful Discrection which is a screening of experimental short films on 35mm. Both of these screenings will take place outside the Campbell Carriage Factory Museum, with a reception at 7:30 pm, an artist talk at 8pm, and the screening itself will start after sunset at 8:30pm. For people looking for rides, drives out to the Carriage Factory will be leaving Struts Gallery, 7 Lorne Street, at 7pm each night.
Mike Hoolboom is an artist working in film and video, and the author of three non-fiction books: Plague Years (1998), Fringe Film in Canada (2000) and Practical Dreamers (2008) and one novel The Steve Machine (2008). He is a founding member of the Pleasure Dome screening collective, and has worked as the artistic director of the Images Festival and the experimental film co-ordinator at the CFMDC. This year Hoolboom was the recipient of the Canada Council Bell Award which is given annually to a Canadian video artist who has made an exceptional contribution to the advancement of the art form.
On Friday, September 17, Mike Hoolboom will be presenting a film by Deborah Stratman called O'er The Land. This exciting documentary film premiered at the Sundance Film Festival, 2009, and has won many international awards including: Best Documentary Feature at L’Alternativa International Film Festival (Barcelona), Best of the Festival at both the Ann Arbour Film Festival and the Iowa City Documentary Film Festival, and Best International Film at the Images Festival (Toronto)
O'er the Land is a meditation on national identity, gun culture, wilderness, consumption, patriotism and the possibility of personal transcendence. The film is interrupted by the story of Col. William Rankin who in 1959, was forced to eject from his F8U fighter jet at 48,000 feet without a pressure suit, only to get trapped for 45 minutes in the up and down drafts of a massive thunderstorm. Remarkably, he survived.
Solomon Nagler's films, installations, and curated shows have played across Canada, in the U.S., Europe and Asia. Retrospectives of his work have screened at Winnipeg Cinematheque, Excentris Cinema in Montreal and Festival De Le Cinéma Different in Paris. Nagler is currently a professor at NSCAD University in Halifax.
Films screening as a part of Blissful Discretion include: Long Shadows (Joshua Bonetta) C:won Eyed Jail (Kelly Egan) Refraction Series (Chris Gehman) Mamori (Karl Lemieux) Ville Marie (Alexandre Larose) Trees of Syntax, Leaves of Axis (Diachi Saito) Fore-and-Aft (Sara MacLean) sea series #6 - Landfall at Métis-sur-Mer (John Price) and sea series #5 - Georgian Bay : a survey of littoral recreation (John Price)
These screenings provide an exciting opportunity to see unique experimental film and video work outside of the institutional walls of the gallery. This opens the project up to wider New Brunswick audiences who might not normally cross the threshold of artist run centres. It also removes the work from the realm of normal expectations and places it into an environment where anything is possible.
These screenings also mark the launch of Sift; a new cultural broadsheet devoted to critical writing, interviews, and images about contemporary art. Each curator has been asked to write an essay about the films they are presenting. The essays, along with interviews are printed in the inaugural issues of Sift as well as published on our website.
A major component of the Sites for Seeing project is bringing these artists to Sackville to engage with the local community. During their visit, they will meet with local artists and residents at a reception before the screening, as well as through individual studio visits the day after the screening.
Sites for Seeing is made possible through the support of a dissemination grant from the Canada Council for the Arts. For more information on this project, contact amanda@strutsgallery.ca or phone 506-536-1211.

New Brunswick Pulse
By Gretchen Kelbaugh
(Photo: Coleen Wagner and women from Uganda)
Colleen Wagner, Governor General's award-winning playwright, is writing a female-centered heroic myth (a play) from the stories of women and girls who have survived trauma (Rwanda, post-genocide; Uganda and the child soldier; South Africa, rape capital of the world) and then contrasting those stories to the lives of people in matriarchal societies... the few that remain, where rape and gender-based violence is almost non-existent . Children follow the mother's lineage, women have economic independence (as do men) and where there is gender equality... i.e. women have power. Shooting for the matriarchal segment is from Sept-Nov. She'll have a blog on the progress. The DP is Elisa Iannacone.
Film Co-op member Pam Gallant is directing, shooting and editing four half-hour documentaries for the series Petites Vues de Chez-Nous this upcoming year to be broadcast on Radio-Canada in the fall. It is with CinImage Productions.
Film Co-op member Gia Milani’s short film, A Dark Radius , will be screening at the Atlantic Film Festival in September. It has been making the festival rounds in New Jersey, France, Minnesota, and will also be at the Toronto Independent Film Festival next month. The film, based on sex trafficking in Canada, was partially funded by CBC Atlantic.
Film Co-op member Bunthivy Nou's video poem September/Lost premiered last month at the PEI International Film Festival and the St. Andrews Film Festival and will screen at Silver Wave in November. Her short comedy Super Geek Math Boy! Trailer is currently online at www.yellowwoodpictures.com (Super Geek Math Boy! will also screen at Silver Wave in November).
She's busy volunteering now on the Silver Wave Film Festival doing graphic design.
Film Co-op member Michelle Lovegrove Thomson is starting a Masters of Information in September at U of T, while working on a few film projects, such as finishing an NB Artsboard-funded experimental short called Bountyfall . She has recently discovered that her short musical clip Librarians at Night has been accepted into the Silver Wave Film Festival and has been reposted on the blog 'Bookninja', as well as the website for a Portuguese film festival dedicated to literacy, called 'Bibliofilmes Festival.' She has recently joined WIFT-Toronto and LIFT.

SAINT JOHN - CREW CALL
I’m putting together a crew for a short 18th century adventure/ thriller called The Beckon of the Beast . The film tells the story of a hunting party sent from a British naval vessel to a deserted island. Instead of following the order to “bring back fresh meat” a self seeking officer puts his crew in peril leading them after a mythical beast.
Shooting is will take place mostly in the Saint John area and is tentatively scheduled for two weekends in October. This is a volunteer/deferral project and roles that involve equipment use will require film co-op membership who are trained or are available to be trained.
If you’re interested in being a part in the production contact me (Nathan Savage) at nathansavage44@gmail.com , (please indicate any areas of specialization and or interest).
A casting call will follow soon.
This project is made possible through the Short Film Venture Grant through NB Film and the New Brunswick Filmmakers' Co-operative.
