A LITTLE MORE ABOUT CAYMAN

Cayman moved to Los Angeles from Saint John, NB about four years ago to pursue her acting and filmmaking career. Since then, she has capitalized on every moment: writing, producing, directing, and starring in her first film "Leap of Fate", which debuted in 2006 at recognized film festivals across North America, including New Brunswick’s own Silver Wave.

Since then, she has completed three more projects. Soup Ladle, which was completed in July 2007, met tremendous success as it has been short-listed as "Best Short Film" at several film festivals and has won the title as "Best Film from Away" from the Silver Wave Film Festival in New Brunswick, Canada. Her most recent project "His Good Will" has garnered tremendous success. It has and continues to play at prestigious film festivals worldwide including Festival de Cannes, LA Shorts Fest and the Chicago International Film Festival. It has recently been qualified and submitted for 2009 Academy® Award consideration under the "Live Action Short Film" category.
As a director, Cayman has had her hand in a number of other projects. She is currently writing her first full-length feature film and plans on shooting within the next two years. In the meanwhile, Cayman is working on a number of short films, including "Commitment" and "Tap Dancer" which are in pre-production and will be ready for the film festival circuit in spring 2009. Cayman's most recent film "Suspendu" which was co-directed with actor Laurent Puechguirbal, is a part French, part English short film about "free will". This film is set to hit film festivals this upcoming Spring.

Cayman submitted “His Good Will” and “Suspendu” to Silver Wave recently.

FREDERICTON MONDAY NIGHT FILM SERIES BEGINS NEW SEASON SOON!

To find out more about the series, go to http://www.nbfilmcoop.com/fs.htm

Memberships for the Monday Night Film Series are available at the Film Co-op and at Tilley Hall before each scheduled screening.

IS ANYBODY THERE?
September 14 , 8pm at Tilley Hall, UNB Campus
Director: John Crowley
Cast: Michael Caine, Bill Milner, Anne-Marie Duff, David Morrissey
Run Time: 92 minutes
Country:  UK
Year: 2009
Language: English
Distributor: E1 Entertainment
An official selection of the 2008 Toronto International Film Festival®, the critically lauded Is Anybody There? is a tender portrait of friendship between an inquisitive ten-year-old boy and a retired magician. Fresh from his 2007 Festival success Boy A, Irish director John Crowley returns to the world of a young boy, infusing his new work with the childish naïveté of a precocious and curious lad named Edward (Bill Milner, Son of Rambow), whose less-than-idyllic home happens to double as a hospice for the aged.
As his parents (Anne-Marie Duff and David Morrissey) struggle to keep the family business afloat, Edward pursues his obsession with the paranormal. Surrounded by the elderly, he is intrigued by death, toting his tape recorder
around in an attempt to find clues that will help him understand mortality. With the arrival of the bitter, burned-out Clarence (the indomitable Michael Caine), who unwillingly finds himself an inmate of the hospice, Edward’s interests take on an entirely different dimension. An ex-magician who has stopped practising his trade, Clarence no longer finds positive elements in anything or anyone. The irascible, angry old man is at first barely able to tolerate the young whippersnapper, but it is not long before they are drawn together, two mutual outsiders trying to make sense of the world.

Caine gives a commanding and daring performance as the jaded Clarence, and Milner is a perfect foil as the youngster. This unlikely couple find themselves embroiled in a series of comic misadventures that touch on the deeper questions and mysteries of life. Full of wit, wisdom and wistfulness, Is Anybody There? confronts death and the hereafter with humour and honesty.
“It is a trembly and vulnerable Michael Caine that we see in Is Anybody There?, a finely drawn and gentle British drama propelled by another of the star’s unforgettable screen portraits.” – Betsy Sharkey, Los Angeles Times

Biz & Indie News

AS SEEN FROM HERE, THERE AND EVERYWHERE

By Jim Lavoie

The Blood, Sweat and Tears of Recreating History:
Cultural Capital Style

I have played many a role, mostly in silence, in my few years of being involved in this crazy biz we call show but this past weekend I threw what little dignity I had left to the wind.

For reasons which I will have to clarify with my shrink I found myself dressed in naught but a Johnnie (some would call it other things – nightie being one) as I prepared to take one for the team. Oh yeah I was going die, but not from embarrassment, but because the Director, Wild Gilles (or Chris Giles as some of you know him) thought I had experience enough (I had a heart attack a while back) to fake a sudden collapse. If there ever was a case of being stereotyped…

To be serious, there is so much work and detail being put into these productions of historical and cultural significance. It is truly amazing to see the cast and crew, primarily NB Film Co-op members, at work.

If you ever wondered about the difference between a commercial shoot and an independent Film Co-op shoot, the two brief emails below say it all
FYI:  Being the estimator that I am... Terry Oakes speaking about “Venus in Flames”...I estimate the total number of hours at the end of each shoot for shitz and giggles. My estimate for this shoot works out to be about 1000 people hours and feel this is probably lowballing it. It doesn't include writing the script, the actors' time, pre-production or post. Add another
500 hours to be safe. So, if total run time of said film is 15 minutes, that works out to be 100 hours per minute for the finished product.”
We made it!! Says, First AD BronweN
” I want to thank everyone who worked their butts off on set to help Chris see his vision realized.  It would have been impossible to accomplish the shot list without you.  We got 122 shots done in one (long) weekend, which is an absolutely amazing feat!

A big shout out to Alan Edwards and the myriad team of grips helping him last night for putting up a 35 ft (??) green screen to make sure that Chris got the shots he wanted in the rooms he liked best.  You all ROCK! I look forward to working with all of you again.  You are an amazing crew!”

National Video Competition is a contest which provides the opportunity for youth, between the ages of 12 and 20, to submit short videos (45 to 60 seconds) on their thoughts about eliminating racism.
