NBFC Spotlight!

Picaroons TRADITIONAL ALES & the NB Film Co-op’s Silver Wave Film Festival Presents

“FILMS ON TAP”

The NB Film Co-op and Picaroons Traditional Ales want to take you on a cinematic booze cruise, raising a glass to the best NB indie film clips that show the seductive chemistry between the magical elixir we call beer and great short original films

Imagine if the Persian Poet Hafiz had said instead “Give me beer, that I may for a time forget the cares of the world,” instead of ‘wine’. The cinematic libation has a long and glorious history, while the glugging of beer has become, for many of us, an essential accompaniment to movie viewing. This needs to be celebrated more; much in the same way wine is celebrated constantly in films.

The lulling yet exciting properties of both beer and film make them ideal companions. Both depend as much on mood as on any tangible properties to delight and entrance us.

Spring forth oh most noble beer drinking or beer loving filmmakers. Let us raise beer to the same heights that wine has enjoyed since the beginning of time.

Deadline for Submission: Friday, October 16

Winning Film Award Announcement: October 22, 2009

THE HURT LOCKER
September 21, 8pm at Tilley Hall, UNB Campus
Director: Kathryn Bigelow
Cast: Jeremy Renner, Anthony Mackie, Bryan Geraghty, Evangeline Lilly, David Morse, Ralph Fiennes, Guy Pearce
Run Time: 131 minutes
Country: USA
Year: 2009
Language: English
The Hurt Locker is a riveting, suspenseful portrait of the courage under fire of the military’s most unrecognized heroes: the technicians of the bomb squad, who volunteer to challenge the odds and save lives in one of the world’s most dangerous places. Three members of the Army’s elite Explosive Ordnance Disposal (EOD) squad battle insurgents and each other as they seek out and disarm a wave of roadside bombs on the streets of Baghdad -- in order to try and make the city a safer place for Iraqis and Americans alike. Their mission is clear - protect and save - but it’s anything but easy, for the margin of error on a war-zone bomb is zero. A thrilling and heart-thumping look at the effects of combat and danger on the human psyche, The Hurt Lockeris based on the first-hand observations of journalist and screenwriter Mark Boal, who was embedded with a special bomb unit in Iraq.

Visionary director Kathryn Bigelow brings together groundbreaking realistic action and intimate human drama in a gripping film starring Jeremy Renner (Dahmer, The Assassination of Jesse James), Anthony Mackie (Half Nelson, We Are Marshall) and Brian Geraghty (We Are Marshall, Jarhead), with cameo appearances by Ralph Fiennes (The Reader), David Morse (“John Adams”), Evangeline Lilly (“Lost”) and Guy Pearce (Memento).

In the summer of 2004, Sergeant J.T. Sanborn (Anthony Mackie) and Specialist Owen Eldridge (Brian Geraghty) of Bravo Company are at the volatile center of the war, part of a small counterforce specifically trained to handle the homemade bombs, or Improvised Explosive Devices (IEDs), that account for more than half of American hostile deaths and have killed thousands of Iraqis. A high-pressure, high-stakes assignment, the job leaves no room for mistakes, as they learn when they lose their team leader on a mission.

When Staff Sergeant William James (Jeremy Renner) takes over the team, Sanborn and Eldridge are shocked by what seems like his reckless disregard for military protocol and basic safety measures. And yet, in the fog of war, appearances are never reliable for long. Is James really a swaggering cowboy who lives for peak experiences and the moments when the margin of error is zero or is he a consummate professional who has honed his esoteric craft to high-wire precision? As the fiery chaos of Baghdad swirls around them, the men struggle to understand and contain their new leader long enough for them to make it home. They have only 38 days left in their tour of Iraq, but with each new mission comes another deadly encounter, and as James blurs the line between bravery and bravado, it seems only a matter of time before disaster will strike.

With a visual and emotional intensity that makes audiences feel like they have been transported to Iraq¹s dizzying, 24-hour turmoil, The Hurt Locker is both a tense portrayal of real-life sacrifice and heroism, and a probing look at the soul-numbing rigors and potent allure of the modern battlefield.

Today on CBC Radio – Maritime Noon with host Costas Halavrezos
Weekdays 12:00 to 1:00 p.m. AT
Talkback: 1-800-565-5463
Phone-in: 1-800-565-1940
As the Atlantic Film Festival gets underway week, we'll hear about the latest crop of cinematic works created in this region.

In any given year, though, those films only scratch the surface of all the stories - fictional or historical - which deserve to come to life on the silver screen.

So which great stories remain to be told from New Brunswick, Nova Scotia and Prince Edward Island ?

Our question : "Which Maritime story would make a good feature film or documentary ?"

WANTED: FILMS FROM INDEPENDENT & STUDENT FILMMAKERS

Cape Town Television (CTV) is a non-profit organization established as a community television service to serve the greater Cape Town metropolitan region and has been broadcasting since September 2008. CTV is interested in all genres of filmmaking and encourages filmmakers to submit their films for broadcast.

Access to film festivals in Cape Town have generally been very limiting to the majority of people living here- owing to where cinemas are based and the cost of attending the screening. As such, Cape Town TV would like to propose a system that will take independant media to the small screen.

We are encouraging filmmakers to use CTV as a medium through which independent work can be showcased – whether it is shot on cell phones, consumer video cameras or more high-end cameras. We have a potential audience of 2.5 million people living in our footprint. We do not limit our acquisitions to local films but also actively seek national and international content
