NBFC Indie Member Spotlight!

(Photo of Actor Josh Linton by Jeff Crawford)

Hopewell follows central protagonist David, a mechanic who has worked full-time at his uncle’s garage since he was 10 years old. After his parents’ untimely death, David has become a recluse, rarely engaging with others and never leaving his uncle’s garage where he eats, sleeps, and works.
David, who is in his mid-30s, has entirely disconnected himself from the rest of the world, and lives in the images of the postcards he collects of New Brunswick destinations that he has placed on the wall of his work space in the garage. The film is an exploration of David’s struggles to gain personal freedom and independence.

Hopewell was just accepted into the 14th Portobello Film Festival which runs September 3-20th.

The Festival is 17 days of non stop cutting edge cinema from the modern masters of the medium – unimpressed with bling, spin and celebrity culture, these guys have gone out and made their films, often on budgets of next to nothing, for the sheer thrill of it.

Tim was also awarded a NB Joy Award at Silver Wave 08. The award gives him over 16,000 dollars worth of production support to help make his newest short film Songbird which will be shot Spring 2010. The Award is offered by the Linda Joy Media Arts Society and supported by partners and sponsors including PS Atlantic, The New Brunswick Filmmakers Cooperative, New Brunswick Film, and Kodak Canada in order to recognize and support outstanding emerging New Brunswick talent.

MONDAY NIGHT FILM SERIES BEGINS NEW SEASON SOON!

To find out more about the series, go to http://www.nbfilmcoop.com/fs.htm

Memberships for the Monday Night Film Series are available at the Film Co-op and at Tilley Hall before each scheduled screening.

IS ANYBODY THERE?
September 14 , 8pm at Tilley Hall, UNB Campus
Director: John Crowley
Cast: Michael Caine, Bill Milner, Anne-Marie Duff, David Morrissey
Run Time: 92 minutes
Country:  UK
Year: 2009
Language: English
Distributor: E1 Entertainment
An official selection of the 2008 Toronto International Film Festival®, the critically lauded Is Anybody There? is a tender portrait of friendship between an inquisitive ten-year-old boy and a retired magician. Fresh from his 2007 Festival success Boy A, Irish director John Crowley returns to the world of a young boy, infusing his new work with the childish naïveté of a precocious and curious lad named Edward (Bill Milner, Son of Rambow), whose less-than-idyllic home happens to double as a hospice for the aged.
As his parents (Anne-Marie Duff and David Morrissey) struggle to keep the family business afloat, Edward pursues his obsession with the paranormal. Surrounded by the elderly, he is intrigued by death, toting his tape recorder
around in an attempt to find clues that will help him understand mortality. With the arrival of the bitter, burned-out Clarence (the indomitable Michael Caine), who unwillingly finds himself an inmate of the hospice, Edward’s interests take on an entirely different dimension. An ex-magician who has stopped practising his trade, Clarence no longer finds positive elements in anything or anyone. The irascible, angry old man is at first barely able to tolerate the young whippersnapper, but it is not long before they are drawn together, two mutual outsiders trying to make sense of the world.

Caine gives a commanding and daring performance as the jaded Clarence, and Milner is a perfect foil as the youngster. This unlikely couple find themselves embroiled in a series of comic misadventures that touch on the deeper questions and mysteries of life. Full of wit, wisdom and wistfulness, Is Anybody There? confronts death and the hereafter with humour and honesty.
“It is a trembly and vulnerable Michael Caine that we see in Is Anybody There?, a finely drawn and gentle British drama propelled by another of the star’s unforgettable screen portraits.” – Betsy Sharkey, Los Angeles Times

TNB LAUNCHES ADULT ENSEMBLE

Fredericton, NB – TNB Theatre School is thrilled to mark its 10th anniversary with the formation of the Adult Ensemble; a new training opportunity for adult actors that’s unique to the province.

For the past ten years TNB Theatre School has offered a wide range of programming and artistic outlets for students aged 4-18. TNB mentors and supports young actors fresh from their professional training through TNB Young Company, and the Main Stage is committed to celebrating New Brunswick’s best theatre professionals. But, until now, there has been no outlet for the adult community actor. “There is tremendous talent in this province and a missing link” said Artistic Producer Caleb Marshall, who will also lead the ensemble, “there is a need for advanced training. Actors are hungry to have a process that makes sense to them, and that anchors them in the world of the play.”

The ensemble will be made up of emerging and established community actors, coming together to explore and be challenged by theory and technique from the core three disciplines of acting, voice and movement. “Belonging to a company of actors and embracing the risk and trust that comes with that is very important to this kind of training” said Marshall, “which is the reason I chose the ensemble format.” He encourages any interested local performer to apply, “an ensemble has to be made up of a diverse group of characters.”

Auditions will be held for the 14 available places Sunday September 13th from 7-9pm at Theatre New Brunswick; 55 Whiting Road, Unit 31. Interested applicants should contact TNB at 460-1386 or email theatreschool@tnb.nb.ca to book an audition timeslot.

Those auditioning will be asked to prepare a short contemporary monologue (of no more than 10 lines), as well as five lines of Shakespeare. Tuition for the program is $275.00 per term. The ensemble’s first term will run for 10 weeks on Sunday nights from 7-9pm beginning September 20th.

GOT SKILLS?

3 years ago, when I was in 11th grade, I participated in a video production competition as part of the annual provincial Skills/Compétences Canada Competition. Upon arrival, we quickly found out we had won provincials because no other teams had showed up to compete in our category. Before we knew it we were in Halifax competing in the 2007 Skills Canada Competition against 12 other teams, some of which had beaten out hundreds of other teams just to get a shot at nationals. The concept is simple. Each person or team competing is given a task they must complete in their specific field of expertise, be it welding, small engine repair, graphic design, brick laying, landscaping, etc. They are given a specific amount of time to do it, and then are judged on the work they did. Our first year competing we won a silver medal for NB, and the second year we brought home a bronze in Saskatoon.

Then I graduated, and didn't hear anything about the contest for two years. Then, one day out of the blue, my old co-ordinator gave me a call and asked if me and a friend would be interested in covering the World Skills Competition in french, in Calgary, all expenses paid for a week. Of course I jumped at the chance. I remember wishing that the Television/Video event had a World Skills component to it, but it never seemed to make the cut while we competed. So on Monday I am taking off for what is sure to be quite an adventure. For 4 days we will be covering intense international competition between competitors from 51 countries around the world and then putting our videos online at www.worldskills2009.com. The rest of the time we plan on taking in the sights and goings on in the city. I remember being quite the troublemaker in years past, running full tilt in Saskatoon to make it back to our hotel room for curfew, saying hello to our chaperones, and then heading out again for more fun later on. I'm now only slightly older, therefore am legally allowed to do whatever I want and plan to take full advantage of that while away, after all, you gotta have fun sometime!

Thanks Cat and Tony for letting me fly away, will see you all very soon!
