"It's so difficult to do indie and commercial films on a small budget in NB. The Film Co-op membership & workshop fees are so low compared to what you would pay in Halifax or Toronto. All the benefits you receive from the Organization ongoing are amazing considering the low fees".

Terry Blake, Miramichi Co-op member/filmmaker

FREDERICTON - MONDAY NIGHT FILM SERIES
  Feb 19, 2007 , 8:00pm
SNOW CAKE
Director: Marc Evans
Cast: Alan Rickman, Sigourney Weaver, Carrie-Anne Moss, Emily Hampshire
Run Time: 112 minutes
Country: Canada/United Kingdom
Year: 2006
Language: English
Distributor: Alliance Atlantis
Distributor Estimates Availability As: Current
Video: N/A
Ratings: ON NR / BC NR / AB NR / SK NR / MB NR / PQ NR / Maritimes NR

Screened at the 2006 Toronto International Film Festival®, SNOW CAKE is an intimate drama about the relationship between an autistic woman and a man recovering from a traumatic car accident.

Set in an unnamed Canadian town (it was filmed in Wawa, Ontario), SNOW CAKE unfolds gently as it introduces its quirky, flawed protagonists. Alex (Alan Rickman, SENSE AND SENSIBILITY, LOVE ACTUALLY) is a quiet, sullen man practically collapsing under the weight of existence, who one day offers a ride to Vivienne (Emily Hampshire, A PROBLEM WITH FEAR, TWIST), an innocent and sociable hitchhiker.

Through no fault of his own, Alex has a freak accident that claims Vivienne’s life but leaves Alex virtually unscathed. Overcome with guilt and remorse, he sets out to find Vivienne’s mother, Linda (Sigourney Weaver, THE ICE STORM, A MAP OF THE WORLD), who turns out to be an autistic woman lacking in social skills who communicates by keenly observing the people around her. Staying with Linda for a few days, Alex also meets Linda’s stunning neighbour Maggie (Carrie-Anne Moss, MEMENTO, CHOCOLAT, FIDO), an estranged soul who seems able to fit in anywhere.

As their lives begin to intertwine, issues from the past come to light, forcing all three to confront their respective demons and cope with the hands they have been dealt.

This is an elegant and unflinching film that explores the sadder side of humanity. Gracefully performed by a gifted cast, SNOW CAKE impressively conveys the emotional and physical claustrophobia that pervades a lonely – and possibly redemptive – landscape.

SAINT JOHN - New globetrotting series set to “bring on the bling”

FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE
What is it like to live in the lap of luxury and how much does it cost to get there? Find out where the wealthy are spending their money – and on what – in Planet Luxury, a new program that premieres Monday, February 19th, 2007 at 9:30 p.m. Atlantic on the Canadian digital channel travel+escape.

The 10-part series, produced in New Brunswick, travels the world for an up-close-and-personal look at items you might find on a millionaire’s shopping list. Fabulous French perfume in a diamond-encrusted bottle for the woman who has everything; ultra-slick Dutch sports cars for the speedster in all of us; and elegant Swiss wrist watches worth a cool million – these are just a few of the pricey extravagances featured on Planet Luxury.

The exciting series finds out how those things are made, why they cost so much, and what kind of person will shell out all that cash to buy them. Each globetrotting half-hour episode features two items that people spend lavish amounts of money on. Planet Luxury takes you around the world to beautiful, sometimes exotic destinations to show you the high-end products aimed only at the rich. Along the way, you’ll meet the interesting characters behind the products, and the high-end consumers who snap them up. Planet Luxury isn’t interested in second best. It’s all about Number One.

This is the show that travels the world to find stuff we all want, but only the wealthy can afford. The series is produced by Timothy M. Hogan, Rick LeGuerrier, and Andrew Tidby (Saint John Film Co-op member).

Saint John based filmmaker and Film Co-op member Greg Hemmings is associate producer. Planet Luxury is a production of Dream Street Pictures Inc. of Moncton and Tidby Pictures Inc. of Saint John in association with travel+escape, and with the participation of New Brunswick Film.

NEW BRUNSWICK - MUSIC FOR INDIE FILMS
Greetings from VVVU Music, a small independent music label based in Fredericton.

We have a considerable amount of music that could work well in films. Be it electronic, experimental, avant-garde, rock, pop, ambient or alternative, our artists (from NB & NS) are quite open to contributing music to films. Two of our groups, Paradise Lust and The Dry Heeves, have already contributed music to films. In the case of The Dry Heeves, who’ve worked with the Canadian Film Centre, their music has been used in short films in the US and in a feature film (Siblings) here in Canada.

If there’s anything we can do to be of assistance, don’t hesitate to contact us. Feel free to explore our web site and individual band pages. Thank you.

Regards,

Cyril MacDonald

STORIES/UPDATES

SAINT JOHN - 'Stuck' on the Set

By Saint John based Film Co-op member Suzanne Short

(Photo - Stephen Rea and Suzanne Short)

Oct 31 - a day when lots of people don costumes and make-up and get into character. Yet, for me, this year differed from the usual party preparations.

It was still dark as I rolled out of bed and headed to the set of 'Stuck' The week was turning into one whose memories would last a lifetime and I was both eager and crazed at the thought of what the day would bring. I had already met and become slightly acquainted with some of the cast and crew during an earlier rehearsal, having managed that day to walk into the hotel room without tripping, refill my water glass without spilling, read my lines without stammering. I even had the courage to slip out a camera and ask for Stephen Rea's indulgence, snapping a shot which would brand me a very cool mom to a son who feasted repeatedly on "V for Vendetta".

Okay, I'll admit the camera slipped out again that (darkened) morning to snap a shot of my trailer announcing itself as the temporary home of the "Receptionist". I'll also admit to calling a few friends from the trailer while waiting to be summoned to hair and make-up. No one can ever accuse me of being jaded or blasé. I was having a heart-thumping, sweaty-palmed blast!

Riding to the set with Patrick McKenna, I surprised myself by slipping easily into the role, greeting him like we were old friends (Patrick, dahling, it's been ages since we last worked together on Geraldine's Fortune)! A consummate professional, Patrick greeted me, in turn, as if we bumped into each other like this on a regular basis.

Once on location - our arrival heralded over walkie-talkies - the energy was electric. I'm always amazed by the industry of it all - the people, the equipment, the skill, the collective experience. I was also amazed at how quickly I started to feel comfortable. Being on set is much easier than thinking about being on set!

Not realizing director Stuart Gordon enjoyed a cult following in the horror genre, I quickly slotted him as a big, teddy bear - funny, generous, accommodating. It was day 2 of the shoot and his enthusiasm was in full force. He stated his vision simply and entertained opinions. A feeling of respect was pervasive. And although I allowed my minimal experience to separate me slightly from those more accomplished, no one else subscribed to any hierarchy. I was embraced as an equal and, curiously, had to work at accepting their acceptance.

Then it was time to share a small scene with an Oscar nominee (!); an open and charitable actor. We rehearsed, we executed, we chatted, and we waited - over and over and over. Finally, Stuart smiled and we wrapped.

A relaxed and congratulatory mood quickly took over and in came a cake and a turnip. It was Stephen's birthday, this last day of October. And in Ireland, in days gone by, a turnip served as a pumpkin for Halloween.

A voluntary walk back to 'base camp' helped me begin digesting the day. Once there, I signed out, bid good-bye to a tired but satisfied crew and drove home a tired but definitely 'bewitched' actor!
