"It's so difficult to do indie and commercial films on a small budget in NB. The Film Co-op membership & workshop fees are so low compared to what you would pay in Halifax or Toronto. All the benefits you receive from the Organization ongoing are amazing considering the low fees".

Terry Blake, Miramichi Co-op member/filmmaker

NBFC RENEWING CO-OP MEMBERS
- Peter de Niverville, Moncton

With the purchase of the G5, I now have all the components I need for doing stop motion animation and for outputting my completed films onto DVD. Although digital animation has become the most popular technique, I still find stop motion has a certain intriguing charm.

One of my favorite sites is (http://www.stopmoshorts.com/) which has a quarterly feature for new animation called the "Visual Haiku Challenge". Each challenge uses a different set of keywords. For a look at the winners of the last challenge go to: (http://www.stopmoshorts.com/gallery/index.php?action=showgal&cat=48) By the way "Ludmilla the Fortune Teller" is great. The next deadline is March 31 and the keywords are: Strength, Ruin, Time, Treasure.
NBFC RENEWING CO-OP MEMBERS  - Michelle Lovegrove Thomson Fredericton/Edmonton
I recently visited the Co-op and renewed my membership... and got to see all the new toys/lenses Tony has been collecting for the Co-op member's future use! I can't wait to get home this summer and try everything out.

I'm currently working on my Masters thesis out in Edmonton (English Lit).  I'm a member of FAVA, the film co-op out here, and have participated in a few events and workshops, though I haven't been able to make any films for the past year due to my academic focus.

I'm looking forward to returning home to NB this summer to crew for local productions (yes?) and start a few projects of my own.  In the meantime, I'm finishing up my thesis on hypertext fiction and blogging communities, and building an online encyclopedic database called "Galvanize"  that will be an ever-growing resource on all things related to online community-building, cyberculture, and activism. Cat asked for a picture, so I'm including this picture of me as "Mike", taken last week when I performed in a Drag King Cabaret in honour of UofAlberta visiting speaker Judith Halberstam.
NBFC RENEWING CO-OP MEMBERS  -  Dan Thebeau, Dieppe

Dan Thebeau's the name and I live in Dieppe. I'm on the eve of my first anniversary as a member of the NBFC and what a year it's been. Not only did I meet a great group of people through the Co-op, I took advantage of the NB Film Co-op's annual workshop series and had the opportunity to work on several shoots such as Michel Guitard's Short Film Venture film Simon Hunter as grip, DOP on Narrow Escape and Changed Fortunes for Ralph Pritchard, and under the watchful eye of my good friend Mike Clattenburg (Trailer Park Boys Director) I even produced my first short film A Day's Grace which was the most fun I've ever had. It permitted for new and lasting friendships and mutual respect. I'm so thankful for the support of the Film Co-op and to everyone who participated. So much fun in fact that I have a few more projects lined up for this year.

Before joining the Film Co-op I bought a Sony VX2000 camera, and since then, I bought a boom and mic, a G5PowerMac complete with FCP 5.2HD. I look forward to the Co-op's new 2007 advanced workshop series now and to bringing you quality produced films from the South Eastern end of the province.

I will be attending the Summer Institute for Film and Television this spring as another step in trying to master craft of Directing. I also love the role of Director of Photography when given the opportunity. Hopefully in the next short while, I hope to learn more about sound recording. I am trained with Co-op equipment and offer my assistance to anyone wanting to produce, so please do not hesitate to contact me at dtheb@nb.sympatico.ca ... even if it just to say, what's up?
NBFC RENEWING CO-OP MEMBERS  -  Britany Sparrow, Fredericton
Britany Sparrow is a returning member who has worked on a number of projects in her short time with the Film Co-op. After graduating from UNB with a Bachelor of Arts and a Certificate in Film Production, Brit joined the crew of Joel Thompson's feature length project "They Didn't Make It," taking on the roles of continuity supervisor, production office coordinator, and actor.

After TDMI wrapped up, Brit has been production manager for both Colin Smart's "Temple of the Sapphire Moon" and Chris Fulton's "Manic Chiropractic." She is also in the pre-production stage of her own short film, "The Perfect Cliche," which she plans to shoot late spring. If anyone would like some
help on a project in the organizational aspects or any aspect at all, they
can contact Brit at fire_on_ice_9@hotmail.com

NB funds training for Film Sector
The New Brunswick Filmmakers Co-operative is receiving a grant of almost $200,000 from the province, it was announced Tuesday, allowing the Film Co-op to improve training in NB with professional workshops at all levels and then have students put their learned skills into play on set afterwards.

Bunthivy Nou, an actor, aspiring director and Co-op member, said she's learning a lot working on short films made entirely in the province, but she'd love to learn more. Feature films and television programs come to the province all the time, she said, and they need trained crews, casts, even accountants and hairdressers. They'd hire local people, if they were more experienced.

With the $196,000 post-secondary education and training grant, the Film Co-op will be able to offer a certificate program designed to provide a more seasoned workforce. Co-op member Mike Cowie said it will give him an opportunity to learn from experienced filmmakers on professional sets, upgrade his skills through workshops and make personal connections. "You mentor with somebody, you do a good job, you prove that you're an eager learner, you show up on time and you're courteous, the next time there is a shoot, they'll call you."

Tony Merzetti, the Co-op's Executive Director, said "people with different kinds of expertise in the province and outside the province will be able to pass along their knowledge at intro/intermediate and advanced levels, and as well, this will be good for experienced producers and crew in the province who are always searching for the next generation of up and comers to work under them on productions."

The grant will be awarded over the course of two years. The partners on this are New Brunswick Filmmakers' Co-operative, New Brunswick Film and Post-Secondary Education, Training and Labour.

John Lennon had a simple idea: “Give Peace a Chance.” In THE U.S. VS. JOHN LENNON, which screened at the 2006 Toronto International Film Festival®, directors David Leaf and John Scheinfeld trace the singer’s evolution as an activist and the powerful forces that rose up against him. Interviewing both friends and opponents and drawing upon a treasure trove of archival footage – plus an extensive new interview with Yoko Ono Lennon – the filmmakers present a man who speaks directly to our own time.

The couple held “Bed-In” events in Amsterdam and Montreal to promote peace. Over Christmas, 1969, they took out billboards in New York, Paris, Toronto and other cities that read, “War is Over! If You Want It.” “You’ve got to sell and sell,” Lennon explained, “until the housewife thinks, ‘Oh, there’s peace or war. That’s the two products.’” Not everyone was pleased. “My dear boy, you’re living in a never-never land,” a New York Times reporter told him. Nixon loyalist G. Gordon Liddy believed Lennon “was being manipulated” by the likes of hippie activist Jerry Rubin and Black Panther Bobby Seale.

Ono and other confidants of Lennon take us inside his experience of the case. Former FBI agents make clear that Lennon was treated as a serious threat. Observers such as Angela Davis, Ron Kovic and Gore Vidal testify to Lennon’s influence on others. “The thing the sixties did was show us the possibility and the responsibility that we all had,” Lennon said. “It wasn’t the answer. It just gave us a glimpse.” This film reawakens his wit, thoughtfulness and optimism for a new generation.
The Film Series lineup is available on the NB Film Co-op website at: http://www.nbfilmcoop.com/fs.htm

SAINT JOHN CO-OP MEMBER ON FEATURE FILM SHOOT IN NS
Hey Cat and Tony. I hope all is way well for you all. I am going to be up for a long visit before the end of the month. Can't wait to see you. take a look at this Bull. I didn't think I could get any closer.

Love always - Saint John Filmmaker, Tim McDonough

SAINT JOHN CO-OP MEMBER'S FILM SCHEDULE IS FULL!
Hey Cat, well all I can say right now is that the last 2 weeks have been the craziest ever.

I have been trying to sign a broadcast deal with The Fight Network for my next project (a wrestling documentary series...more later) also I have been trying to secure funding from the Bell Fund which is a full time job, application was due yesterday....where was I during the most important climactic part of my week? Snowboarding in Golden BC.

The Bellfund was due and I didn't have a signed agreement...all this work potentially for not...until I realized that I had cell service ONLY at the top of the mountain in the gondola! So, every time I went up the hill I was on the phone with the broadcaster, my entertainment lawyer and my
co -producer making the deal...we came to an agreement. They then fed-exed the contract and I got it into the Bell Fund with 3 minutes to spare. So that's my little update for you for now!
