"It's so difficult to do indie and commercial films on a small budget in NB. The Film Co-op membership & workshop fees are so low compared to what you would pay in Halifax or Toronto. All the benefits you receive from the Organization ongoing are amazing considering the low fees".

FREDERICTON - MONDAY NIGHT FILM SERIES

Feb 26, 2007, 8:00pm
LITTLE CHILDREN
Director: Todd Field
Cast: Kate Winslet, Jennifer Connelly, Patrick Wilson, Noah Emmerich, Jackie Earle Haley
Run Time: 130 minutes
Country: USA
Year: 2006
Language: English
Distributor: Alliance Atlantis
Distributor Estimates Availability As: Current
Video: N/A
Ratings: ON 14A / BC 18A / AB NR / SK 18A / MB 14A / PQ 13ANS+ / Maritimes NR

The film is a scathing and frequently hilarious dissection of the mores and rituals of a group of hot-to-trot fledgling parents, brought vividly to life by some of the best young actors working today: Kate Winslet, Jennifer Connelly and fast-rising star Patrick Wilson.

Sarah (a phenomenal Winslet, ALL THE KING’S MEN, ETERNAL SUNSHINE OF THE SPOTLESS MIND) was made for better things: married to a jackass in the corporate branding business, the grad-school dropout is a stay-at-home mom to her adorable but demanding little daughter, Lucy (Sadie Goldstein). At the local playground she is subjected to the inane gossip of a trio of fellow mums, but their routine is broken by the sudden return of Brad (Wilson, THE PHANTOM OF THE OPERA, HARD CANDY), a hunky househusband they’ve dubbed the Prom King.

Despite being married to gorgeous Kathy (Connelly, A BEAUTIFUL MIND, HOUSE OF SAND AND FOG) and father to cherubic Aaron (Ty Simpkins), Brad is going through his own malaise. Struggling to pass the bar exam, he is distracted by the lure of a touch-football night league. In an effort to scandalize the meddling mother hens, one day Sarah approaches Brad in the playground.

Spiked with a wry voice-over that gets under each character’s skin, LITTLE CHILDREN revolutionizes familiar narrative terrain. This audacious film is keenly sensitive to how ambitious young adults’ lives and desires change when they have kids (not to mention how parenting can become a competitive sport), and to the characteristics of a paranoid America living under “homeland security.” Many scenes are at once resonant and utterly surprising – just try not to be stunned by a key sequence at the town pool. From its bravura opening sequence to its sublime ending, LITTLE CHILDREN is smart, riveting filmmaking.

“Displaying many of the same qualities that distinguished Todd Field’s debut feature, IN THE BEDROOM, LITTLE CHILDREN is a deftly made, emotionally acute… examination of cracks in middle-class American family life.” – Todd McCarthy, Variety

“[Director Todd] Field performs a high-wire act that balances hard truth and hard-won tenderness. Most movies fade from the memory. This one sticks.” – Peter Travers, Rolling Stone

FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE:
P rovince - Wide Playwriting Contest Launched

Are you destined to be a dramatist? If so, the NotaBle Acts Theatre Company wants to
hear from you. The NotaBle Acts Theatre Company is now accepting submissions for its sixth annual province-wide playwriting competition from New Brunswick residents. Winners will have their work featured as part of the 2007 NotaBle Acts Summer Theatre Festival, to be held in Fredericton, July 25th-August 5th.

Submissions are welcome in two separate categories: The "Taking it to the Street"
contest seeks 5-7 minute scripts to be produced as free public theatre in downtown
Fredericton. Five winners will be selected. The second category, "Acting Out", is for
30-50 minute one-act plays. Two winners will be chosen in this category. The two
winning plays will be showcased as part of the festival's main stage bill, while
runners up will receive public rehearsed readings during the festival.

As part of its continuing commitment to developing home-grown theatre in New Brunswick, nbActs provides support throughout the production process to each of the winning artists. In addition to having their work produced at the festival, all winning playwrights will receive script support (a process called dramaturgy) from an established New Brunswick playwright and a cash prize: $125 for "Taking it to the Street" and $300 for "Acting Out".

Writers interested in the entering the contest should consult the full contest rules and regulations at www.unbf.ca/nbacts. Questions about the contest or this year's festival can be directed to festival co-Artistic Director, Len Falkenstein, at nbacts@unb.c
or 455-5609. The deadline for entries is April 23, 2007.

CREW CALL
Award winning Fredericton Film Co-op member filmmaker needs enthusiastic volunteer production manager to help organize and run two productions this spring and summer. I will also need a production assistant who wants to learn on set duties and some lighting (any members who handle Co-op equipment must have been trained on it through Co-op required workshops). It will be important to have someone who can handle working outdoors in a guerilla shoot style environment and able to work with a cantankerous director under extreme conditions. STORIES/UPDATES

Ottawa: NB Film Co-op in Film and Television Training Data Base
http://www.filmtvtraining.ca
http://www.formationcinetele.ca

The Cultural Human Resources Council (CHRC) is pleased to announce the launch of its new Film and Television Training Data Base.

This unique resource allows film and television professionals (including directors, producers, actors, musicians, writers, composers and technical workers), and those preparing to enter the industry, to easily identify training opportunities.

For several years, the film and television industry has called for this national training data base. They recognize its key role in "harmonizing training", as both a practical tool to assist access to training, and a policy tool to identify training gaps and advance solutions.

The TDB was funded by Human Resources and Social Development Canada, and the Department of Canadian Heritage. A Steering Committee of professionals representing training providers including Institut nationale de l'image et du son (INIS), the Canadian Film and Television Production Association (CFTPA), the Canada Film Centre (CFC), the National Screen Institute (NSI), the Canadian Screen Training Centre (CSTC), and Women in Film and Television (WIFT), and funders including the Department of Canadian Heritage and Telefilm, oversaw the development of the TDB. M3K Solutions (Amadeus), in collaboration with ArtExpert.ca, were responsible for building and populating the TDB.

Users may search by training provider, area of training (i.e. writing and research, directing, producing, technical crew, post-production, new media and acting), and type of training (full-time, professional development, workshops, on-the-job, mentoring, seminars/master classes, e-learning). Information contained in the TDB is maintained by the training providers themselves, therefore will be up to date and accurate.

The current listing of training providers includes professional associations, industry organizations and private institutions. A second phase is planned which will include the addition of universities and colleges that offer courses, degrees and diplomas in film and television related studies.

The Cultural Human Resources Council (CHRC) strives to be at the centre of vision and forward thinking in the area of cultural human resources development. CHRC brings together representatives of arts disciplines and cultural industries in the cultural sector to address the training and career development needs of cultural workers - artists, creators, technical staff, managers and all others engaged professionally in the sector, including the self-employed. To become a member of CHRC please visit our website.

Media interested in setting up an interview with CHRC representatives should contact Megan Guy (613-562-1535 x 31; mguy@culturalhrc.ca
