Paul Angers has been a member of St-John Ambulance for about 18 years. During this time, he took a course to be able to do special effects make-up to enable first-aid competitors to be able to see the injuries they were to treat. He has been doing this type of specialty make-up work for ten years and has been a first-aid/CPR instructor for five years.

While working for St-John Ambulance Paul had a walk on role in the feature film Frozen with Fear starring Bo Derek and Wayne Rogers. Through the Film Co-op, he has done make-up for Tim O'Neil's Short Film Venture Film, Unseen Enemy and most recently Joel Thompson's low budget feature, They Didn't Make It.
The first aid kit that is used on NB Film Co-op member film and video shoots
is looking barren. Many of the essential items are either now missing or
in short supply. If anyone can donate any of the items below it would be
greatly appreciated. Who knows, maybe the next time you sever an artery on
a shoot, you can rest assure that there will be a bandaid because you
donated them. Some things we need are:

Gauze
Bandages
Tension wraps
Peroxide
Tape
Safety Pins
Q-tips
Additional items that would be found in a first aid kit .

Email Cat at: info@nbfilmcoop.com if you want to help out.

FREDERICTON - MONDAY NIGHT FILM SERIES

VOLVER, a Gala presentation of the 2006 Toronto International Film Festival®, is the latest film from acclaimed master filmmaker Pedro Almodóvar (BAD EDUCATION, TALK TO HER). An entertaining and whimsical film about the power of motherhood and friendship, VOLVER has won numerous awards, including Best Actress and Best Screenplay at the 2006 Cannes Film Festival. Raimunda (Penelope Cruz, DON’T MOVE, ALL ABOUT MY MOTHER) lives in Madrid, where she works hard to support her teenaged daughter Paula (Yohana Cobo, ONLY HUMAN) and her couch-potato husband, Paco (Antonio de la Torre).

When Raimunda discovers a shocked Paula after she has killed Paco in self-defense, Raimunda hides the corpse. Shortly afterwards, Raimunda’s sister Sole (Lola Dueñas, THE SEA INSIDE) reports seeing their dead mother, Irene (Carmen Maura, FREE ZONE, 800 BULLETS). Determined to address unresolved matters, Irene – who pretends to be a Russian immigrant and hides under the bed whenever anyone calls – has returned from the dead to confront her daughters… and to assist Sole in her hairdressing business. Almodóvar’s use of the supernatural takes his filmmaking in a wondrous new direction. Casting is brilliant across the board, but it is Cruz – one of Almodóvar’s regular collaborators – who dominates the screen, delivering a powerfully engaging and believable performance. With VOLVER, Almodóvar deftly combines his quintessential cinematographic talents: hilarious comic realism, bucolic melodrama and the celebration of womanhood.

“It’s very difficult to mesh fantasy with reality, but with great charm and a light touch, Almodóvar shows exactly how it should be done.” – Ray Bennett, The Hollywood Reporter “… his most reflective, subdued, sometimes intense and often comic homecoming, [VOLVER] celebrates the pueblo and people that shaped Almodóvar’s imagination.” – Jonathan Holland, Variety
The Film Series lineup is available on the NB Film Co-op website at: http://www.nbfilmcoop.com/fs.htm

STORIES/UPDATES

LOCAL PHOTOGRAPHER LEFT OUT IN THE COLD
Pam Nelson, a photographer and participant in Charlotte St. Arts Centre outreach programmes, was left homeless on Dec. 30 due to a fire in the apartment building in Marysville where she lived. At this point, she is looking for a 2 bedroom apt. Her "needs" for furnishing will be determined by what the apt. is like. We know that she definitely will need a queen size mattress/boxspring because the broken glass, water and smoke ruined what she had.

Pam has some things, which are now in storage, and some will need to be assessed for restoration/renovation by people who do that work.

The most help for Pam now is information about available apartments. Details may be
left for her on the Charlotte St. Arts Centre telephone number (454-6952) or e-mail to csac@nb.aibn.com .

Many thanks for whatever help you and your network of people can do!

In the bin goes online
All your blog and short films belong to me! By Dennis Poirier, Fredericton NBFC member and HERE Mag writer.

I've reached 80 friends on myspace today. Since I moved to Fredericton early last year, I've created a pseudo-society of friends on http://www.myspace.com/bigd_infilm

In my top 24, Fredericton filmmakers and friends are keeping abreast with my lunacy. I try to entertain more than enlighten. Strangely enough I don't have much time to blog. With practicing for a French stage play: Visa pour L'éternité (Visa for Eternity), being in production for Manic Chiropractor, cast as the lead villain in Temple of the Sapphire Moon and recently cast as Marcus Saint in The Survivors of Rimec, I hardly have time to finish my feature length comedy script Nacho Experiment. I wonder if my participation in all these films is a little too excessive.  I was also cast in A Day at a Time and Simon Hunter!

Manic Chiropractor is written and directed by Chris Fulton. Originally a Notable Acts stage play, Chris adapted his intelligent humour for a digital video short film. Josh Linton plays Brent, a lethargic chiropractor who is one patient away from closing the practice and going to Waikiki. His sister Sue (Sue Thompson) is the practical one but has a short fuse. In walks Mr. Finley (me!) a professional clown up to no good. A smarmy lawyer, (Andrew Jones) also joins the fray and hilarity ensues, with an atypical song and dance routine. Chris is also writing another fantastic script and local humourists with still an unofficial direction are trying to lure him into writing comedy sketches. Come on jerks! We have to start working on these fabulously funny concepts.

Temple of the Sapphire Moon is written, produced and directed by Colin Smart. As production manager of They Didn't Make It, a feature horror film shot in Fredericton last summer, Colin has borrowed many cast and crew members who have stayed in touch in the myspace.com blogosphere and gushy "I miss you guys!" e-mails. Once again Josh Linton will be the lead as Congo Bryson Benton, an Indiana Jones type who is on a quest to discover in the deep dark forests of New Brunswick, a temple! Only if he can get there before the evil Ex-French Legionaire Argyle "Black socks" LeGunn. (me!) My villainous female partner Selena has not been cast yet. So far Dale Brown, our director of photography, has set the standard as he can imitate very well a Betty Boop-like Jewish American New York accent. I hope the casting team of Colin, Britany Sparrow and Sarah Mattar find me a good actress to play off of so Dale can capture the chemistry, and not to mention she has to be a good kisser. I swear, I didn't write the script! But Colin did admit he wrote Argyle with me in mind from the beginning.

The Survivors of Rimec was adapted for a short digital movie by Jeff Combs, a filmmaker from Deer Island. As part of a Christian anthology series, The Survivors of Rimec is a sci-fi film reminiscent of the original Star Trek series. With Jeff, Wayne Casey and Kirk Pennell on the crew, geeky science fiction references may be hurled every minute. The energetic minister is assembling the best volunteer cast in New Brunswick. Favoured to play Marcus Saint, the crusty untrusting pilot of a missionary ship investigating a rescue signal from a frozen desolate planet, I can attest if Jeff gets the actors he seeks, it will be my best acting experience with this ensemble cast.

Further down the road, I might play a witch executioner in a NBFC member film in Moncton in the spring and I might finish my digital video film Hell Dog stuck in post-production limbo for two years in time for the 2007 Silver Wave deadline. I can finally start talking about my script! I've reached a point where I must generate interest to get it produced. I started writing the proposal but I only entered Act III a while ago! Producers are only interested in complete scripts. How's this for a tagline: "Three nacho plates decide the fate of one man." Other than that, I'm looking for funky new sounds for my film's soundtrack, which I'm garnering is one of the many selling points of "Nacho Experiment". My blog friends' samples are amazing!

(If Dennis wins any prestigious awards in the future, he vows to wear socks with huge holes in them to remind him of the times he couldn't afford socks.)
