"It's so difficult to do indie and commercial films on a small budget in NB. The Film Co-op membership & workshop fees are so low compared to what you would pay in Halifax or Toronto. All the benefits you receive from the Organization ongoing are amazing considering the low fees".

Terry Blake, Miramichi Co-op member/filmmaker

RENEWING FILM CO-OP MEMBERS - GRETCHEN KELBAUGH, SJ

(Photo Left) Gretchen Kelbaugh drinks her Jamaican vitamins (amber variety) before a big hockey game.

When not competing with the Moms in Gear hockey team, she's working on a documentary about how to quickly get more women into politics. Other upcoming projects include several educational videos to be co-produced with Connell Smith, following the success of their 80/20; the Developing World video series. These will be shot in Saint John and not the Dominican Republic. Alas.
RENEWING FILM CO-OP MEMBERS - TONY SEKULICH, FREDERICTON
Tony has been a co-op member for more than ten years  now. After taking part in the workshop series that produced the Patrick Collins vignette, Tony made his first solo short The Worst That can Happen in 1998. The following year, Tony began production on his half-hour short film, Caught Looking. Caught Looking would open the inaugural Silver Wave Film Festival in 2001.

That same year, Tony's feature film script The Rivals was accepted to the Atlantic Film Festival's Script Development Programme. That experience helped open the door to the Canadian Film Centre. In 2002 Tony enrolled in the Professional Screenwriting Programme (Bootcamp) at the CFC in Toronto. Upon graduating, Tony was hired to adapt the Stevie Cameron best-selling non-fiction book Blue Trust into a feature Script.

In 2003 Tony was hired to write for the CTV comedy series Robson Arms. Tony's episode "A Material Breach" was recognized with a Gemini Award for Mark McKinney for Individual Performance in a Comedy series in 2006.

Tony has spent the last couple of years splitting time between Fredericton and Toronto. In 2006 Tony was hired to develop the Ron Ellis Story into an MOW project. Tony is currently back in Fredericton where he's volunteering to put together the Certficate in Film and Television Programme.

Tony prays daily for a Leafs Stanley Cup victory and will fight any man woman or child who doesn't think Bruce Springsteen is a music god.

ARTS NEWS

CAMBRIDGE NARROWS FILM CO-OP MEMBER'S PHOTOS AT VISUAL ARTIST EXHIBITION AT CHARLOTTE STREET ARTS CENTRE
Friday March 9th from 5 to 7 pm, CSAC Foyer

BRIGITTE NOEL - ARTIST STATEMENT
For me, bird watching is my lifetime ticket to the theater of nature. When you stop and take the time to observe, it looks like the birds are there to give you a show and it is what I capture with my camera, their performances for you to appreciate as much as I do.

It is more than just observing them; it is an interest in the actual birds, their names, markings, activities, songs and habitats. Not only does it encourage myself to learn more and more about birds, but it gets me outside and builds an appreciation of local wildlife and nature which I am sharing with you through this exhibition.

Bird watching doesn't require a strong knowledge of birds; you learn as soon as you begin to locate and identify local wild birds. I am even starting to learn their calls and challenge myself to identify the birds by their songs just after 10 months of observation, Internet researches and different books.

I have a special interest in bald eagles because they evoke diverse feelings. They are so large, they symbolize power, might, dominance and conquest in the animal world and are looked up to as being invincible. Their cultural aspects are also interesting to learn, for example; many Native American cultures prize the bald eagle for its strength and power. They were also thought to be reincarnations of people that watched over the living and guided them in their day to day activities and ceremonies.

Come and discover what I have learned about birds here in New Brunswick, you will be surprised as much as I was.

Also at this event you will get to see excellent work from the other photographers in the show!

SAINT JOHN - Monday, March 5th
MOVIE NITE AT THE SOMERSET. 8 pm. Somerset, 229 Churchill Boulevard. "The Village". The pact stays true for many years, but when Lucius Hunt seeks medical supplies from the towns beyond the wood, the pact is challenged. SAINT JOHN - SCHOOL OF ROCK AND FILM - ONGOING
AFTER SCHOOL ARTS PROGRAM. Mondays to Fridays, 3:15 pm to 6:15 pm. The Saint John School of Rock and Film “After School Arts Program” is a new and exciting concept, designed to offer parents and their kids a creative alternative at a reasonable price. The program consists of a multitude of courses and activities designed to stimulate the creative brain in children, while keeping the fun factor front and centre.

Classes include (but are not limited to) computer animation, acting, computer graphic design basics, photography, acting, 3 different art classes, as well as craft classes. Activities include a newsletter group, where students will design content and layout from scratch; creating large murals, a book club and a games room with intelligent board games. Each day, children will participate in 2 classes/activities (maximum 3, depending on the length of their stay) and classes are rotated, keeping activities fresh and interesting for the children.

Although the general idea is to introduce the children to all creative activities, they can opt out of classes they have no interest in and participate in those more suited for them. All classes/activities are designed for children ages 8 and up.

The cost of the program itself is $7.50/hour with most materials included and parents can pick their children up at the Saint John School of Rock and Film between 5:15 pm and 6:15 pm. Transportation charge: Daily pick up from Saint John area schools by HMS Transportation is scheduled at a flat rate of $ 5 per child, based on a minimum of 20 children per bus ($ 25/week).This charge is in addition to the program fee. The school is offering transportation as an additional service to parents at cost and the service is not mandatory. Best,

Saint John based Film Co-op member Steve Doiron

I'm a Saint John based Film Co-op member and I just applied to be on a reality TV show for filmmakers......first I'd like to apologize for entering a reality tv show - but this show doesn't just rely on looks or image, so, it's not your typical one.

For the submission I have unloaded a 5 minute movie we shot last year "The Meeting". It played at the Silver Wave NB shorts (on Friday). For those of you who haven't seen it go to check it out. It has a running man in red pyjamas. I uploaded a bit late so I'm playing catch up. I need your VOTE. It takes only a minute to register and you can vote and watch as many films on the site as you want. There are a lot of Film Co-op films that would blow some of the other films out of the water.

Saint John based Film Co-op member Richard MacQueen
Saint John based Film Co-op member Norean Goldston has a film On the Lot!
Please go to:  http://films.thelot.com/films/25702 and vote to help her out.
MONCTON - ON THE LOT!
Just wanted to let you know that at least 4 filmmakers from Moncton were able to get their submission to On The Lot before the deadline.

Please take the opportunity to check mine out at: http://films.thelot.com/films/17856/

You will have a chance to Rate it and Add your comments (please do so). I would also really appreciate it if you would send the above link to as many of your friends as possible.

Once the others get confirmation of their upload, I am hoping that they will send the same invite out for us to review theirs.

Moncton based Film Co-op member Ralph Pritchard

STORIES/UPDATES

FREDERICTON
If you live in the Fredericton area and you've thought about starting a blog to promote yourself as an actor and/or filmmaker, then take a look at Civic-Fidelity Fredericton. Ci-fi.org is a Fredericton based and focused project which is working on uniting artists within the Fredericton area using free services such as blogs, photo galleries, video and audio. If you've ever thought of creating an audio or video podcast,

Civic Fidelity is a great place to host your media. The Fredericton Media Commons section of the website is an experimental project in which users of the site may upload video and music files to be shared with other users. Ci-Fi is encouraging users to download other users' music, remix it, then repost it to the site.

This process is possible via Creative Commons licensing. With Creative Commons licensing, users do not have to worry about copyright infringements because the license dictates what people can do with the media. This encourages collaboration between strangers who live in the same city. The Fredericton Media Commons will serve the city as a media resource centre. If you are a film maker looking for free music to use in a film, then head over to the Media Commons, download an mp3, place it in your film and just give the credit to the user, you don't even need to ask for their permission! Civic Fidelity's free services can be found here:
