ARTS NEWS

NB EXCELLENCE AWARD WINNER ON ROAD TO RECOVERY AFTER SURGERY
Internationally renowned artist and driving force behind the Charlotte Street Arts Centre; Charlotte Glencross, is resting comfortably at home now after a recent serious surgery. The arts community hopes to have her back in action soon.

An artist in her own right, Charlotte brought together local artists, the business community, the military, three levels of government, and countless volunteers  for more than five years to bring about the incredible transformation of a historic, long-out-of-use school in downtown Fredericton. It now houses artists from all disciplines (including the NB Film Co-op), giving them a place to create and exhibit their work. Without Glencross's leadership and perseverance, few believe that this dream of an Arts Centre in Fredericton would have been achievable.

Charlotte is a highly accomplished weaver of great merit. She is an inspiration to artists and the arts community for her tenacity and relentless pursuit of a cultural space for the arts and wider community in Fredericton.

As well, she spent ten years in the public service as an administrator in the New Brunswick government, where she played a critical role in the development of the New Brunswick Arts Board.

All well wishes and cards for Charlotte can be mailed to: Fredericton Arts and Learning, P.O. Box 1303, Station A, Fredericton, NB E3B 5C8 or dropped off to the Charlotte Street Arts Centre to Brigitte Noel, Facilities Manager at 732 Charlotte Street to be given to Charlotte on her return.
NB COLLEGE OF CRAFT & DESIGN
NBCCD Gallery opens with a bang for 2006-2007 Season!

With a collection of sculptural works by Gagetown Potter Peter Thomas - Thursday, September 7 from 4-6pm; this earlier opening will accommodate a gallery hop to Ingrid Mueller's Art + Concepts at 117 York Street, where an exhibition of paintings by Philip Iverson opens from 5-7pm.

Peter Thomas, "In Homage/In Memory," consists of two bodies of sculpture formed with low-fire clay and glazes. They are works of conscience and celebration - meditations on the way that people choose to live their lives, and deal with death, an inevitable part of the life process.

In Homage/In Memory opens at The Gallery at The New Brunswick College of Craft and Design Thursday September 7 at 4pm. For more information and interviews call Director Karen Ruet at 457-6805.

AN UPDATE FROM SHEDIAC, NEW BRUNSWICK
By Moncton Film Co-op member, Ralph Pritchard
Aloha from Shediac, NB on the shores of warmest ocean beaches north of the the Virginias. It continues to be a busy summer as the filming of "Narrow Escape" reaches 2/3rds completion. The crew and cast are having a ball and learning all kinds of cool stuff as Cat continues to supply us with great how-to information. We have been taking production photos and posting them to our web site at http://www.reelfilms.ca click on the words "Narrow Escape" and explore the gallery.

Danny Thebeau has started rehearsals for "A Day of Grace" and I was fortunate enough to win the role of the Homeless Man. This of course means that the beard can't look too long or too shaggy much to the shigrin of my wife Jan. I haven't had a kiss in 3 months!! Although I originally anticipated only having a 5-day growth for my production of Narrow Escape, I have been able to alter the script to make the beard fit. When the casting call went out recently for look-a-likes in the crime re-enactment series, I realized that if I wanted to play a role it would either have to be the wolfman or a hunter. You can see by the photos that the Hunter prevailed. They shot the scenes in Fredericton on Tuesday of this week and I ran into some old friends from the Black-Eyed Dog crew. Check out what I found on the ground in the photo above.

Although our respective films will not be ready in time for the Silver Wave Film Festival hosted by the Film Co-op in Fredericton each year, Danny and I were fortunate enough to take our new found Documentary filmmaking skills learned at the Film Co-op and turn them into an entry called "The Chase". It's an exclusive look at some of Geoff Bell's (appraiser on the Canadian Antique Roadshow series) prized collections and the stories behind each of them.

This week wraps up a summer of being part of a panel of film reviewers on CBC Radio One with Glendon and Gretchen (the two "real" reviewers) and hosted by Rachel Cave. Our role was to find a film that was still available in video rental stores and to provide our comments and reviews on them every week. We had a different genre for each week and this last week we got to choose our all time favourites. If you are able to read this newsletter before 5:30pm on Friday, September 1, 2006 you can hear us on the radio. Otherwise, follow this link to hear all our reviews from the summer including today's. http://www.cbc.ca/shift/summershift-movie.html

P.S. I am going to Silver Wave Film Festival in November, see you all there!!

The City of Bathurst Wins National Contest

The City of Bathurst has been chosen as the first of four community winners in Canada AM's "Wake Up A Winner" contest, on CTV. Bathurst was chosen for its unique entry, a video tour of the city developed by Glen Ferguson, Mike Diotte, Annik Roy and Meredith Caissie.

Jeff Hutcheson, co-host of the program, will be broadcasting live from downtown Bathurst next Thursday, September 7th, 7:30 a.m. - 10:00 a.m. (Atlantic time).

The theme of this national broadcast will be "Celebrate Bathurst's 40th Anniversary", and will serve as a giant birthday bash for the city. Festivities will include a community pancake breakfast, with the food sponsored by Canada AM and served up by the Bathurst Rotary Club. Tickets are $3.00/breakfast and proceeds will go to a local charity.

"I think it's a great thing for Bathurst to be on national TV," said deputy mayor Frank Quigg. "This is going to be great publicity about the natural beauty, the beaches and the lifestyle. All of these positive things we have in Bathurst, we will be able to show the country."

The community is encouraged to join in the celebrations, to show all of Canada what a terrific place Bathurst is. More details will be released later this week. Please tune in to MAX 104.9 and watch L'Hebdo Chaleur and the Northern Light for continuing coverage.

While she struggles with her personal demons, a Canada-wide manhunt for a dangerous fugitive finds Betty caught up in larger events that may lead to a strange kind of peace. Inspired by a true story, Black Eyed Dog is a dark but ultimately life-affirming story of one woman’s journey home and a town’s reckoning with its own dreams and betrayals.
