Spotlight on the Members
My name is Matthew Perry and I'm a new associate member of the Film Co-op based in Fredericton. I'm 19 and currently taking a digital film making
course at the Centre for Arts and Technology. I'm originally from Prince
Edward Island and have had a great interest in films from a young
age. I joined the Film Co-op because I'd really love to be able to help out on a film shoot in any way possible. I very much enjoy working with others that have a similar interest and desire to produce a great piece of work. I'm hoping that I can gain some insight and know more about the filmmaking process.

Hi NB Film Co-op. I wanted to say hello and let you know how I am doing. I've been wrapped up with school and my health, and
transportation has proved difficult this winter.
I don't know how far I will get but at least I know I still can stand/walk. It's not great but my physiotherapist believes that it is
promising though I will probably need bracing for my legs.
I'm also seeing a rehab doctor next week to
see where things should go from here and two weeks later I'm off to
Halifax for a few
days to see more doctors as well.
Look forward to seeing you soon!

2007 renewed Film Co-op member artist Rosi Jory and her husband recently showed their appreciation to NB with a gift. The couple donated property to the community of Summerville on the Kingston Peninsula.
"We came here as immigrants in the early 60s and this gift is our way of saying thank you", say David Jory.
During the Second World War, as war planes flew over young Rosi's village in Germany, she and her family hid themselves in groves of red pine
trees.
When she and her husband, David moved to NB and purchased 75 acres of land that straddle the picturesque Kingston Penninsula 24 years ago, she paid tribute to her family by planting 7,000 seedlings of the same red pines.
David Jory, who moved here from England more than 40 years ago, said that the gift is simply a repayment of a beautiful property to a community and province that has been so welcoming.
"Canada, New Brunswick and Saint John have been good to us," he said. (the property was donated to the ecological preservation organization Nature Trust of New Brunswick). A stewardship fund accompanied the Jory's gift.
"People are starting to reflect more and realize there's more to life than money", Sheppard said. "When people can, more of them are choosing to leave something behind in their natural state for others to enjoy for years to come."

While many writers dream of writing the next great blockbuster, the greatest opportunity for screenwriters in Canada lies in television. But before an emerging writer can break into writing for a television series, they must first understand both the fundamentals of the craft as well as the business realities of episodic television.
The Writing for Television advanced workshop is designed to give emerging writers a foundation of fundamental skills and insight that will prepare them for a journey into the world of television writing.
The material will cover advanced screenwriting technique, a background on the current landscape of Canadian television, and a background on the business realities such as pitching series ideas.
Specifically, they will emerge with the following skill sets:
• A comprehensive understanding of story structure for episodic television
• Deconstructing a television series
• Understanding the composition and dynamics
of a series writer’s room
• Identifying the process of episodic television script development from pitch to final rewrite
• Creating and pitching your own series concept
• Effective pitch techniques
• Writing effective spec scripts
• Acquiring representation with a talent agency
Background on the Instructor
Matt got his start as a production assistant on A&E's "Nero Wolfe" where he was known for making a mean cup of coffee and volunteering in the story department.
Three years later his dedication earned him writing positions on top rated productions such as the Gemini nominated, "15 Love", and Showcase's "Naked Josh". Since then he's worked on productions which include, "Billable Hours" (Showcase), "Life With Derek" (Disney, Family Channel) and most recently CTV's "Whistler".
Leveraging his television experience to branch into the world of film, Matt has worked as a writer and story editor on films such as "Vampires of Suburbia," "Stopover," and the Irvine Welsh feature adaptation of "Ecstasy". Recently his short film, "Frankly" was produced by Monument Productions in L.A. and another, "Fact Is" was produced by Walker Films in Montreal.
Matt compliments his knowledge of story with development experience garnered while developing series television (Capri Films) and by working as a script reader and story consultant (Telefilm Canada, Alliance Atlantis, etc.)
He still makes a mean cup of coffee.

Film Festivals in Montréal
Excerpt from a speech delivered by Wayne Clarkson, Executive Director, Telefilm Canada at a breakfast meeting organized by the Académie canadienne du cinéma et de la télévision in Montreal.
Much has been written over the past many months of the confusion caused by three festivals held within a few months of one
another in Montreal. Also, criticism has been directed at Telefilm generally and myself as Executive Director for not taking a
more proactive role in fixing the problems. For the record, I excluded myself from any direct involvement for a number of
reasons.
Firstly, this issue had begun long before I arrived and was being well managed under the guidance of Charles Bélanger, Chair of
Telefilm's Board. Secondly, I had more immediate challenges and responsibilities to take on: a very demanding new job and
negotiating a new relationship with the Canadian Television Fund.
Thirdly, I had served as director of the Toronto International
Film Festival for eight years (1978-1985), during which I had numerous confrontations with the Montreal World Film Festival
(WFF).
After nine months on the job, and given the soon-to-be concluded festival season (Montreal, Toronto, Halifax, Vancouver plus a
few smaller Festivals from Sudbury to Calgary), it's time to step up.
I strongly support the process and decision taken by Telefilm and SODEC to withdraw financial support from the Montreal
World Film Festival. There was legitimate concern surrounding the financial reporting and accountability of the WFF.
Click here for more of the speech.
