MEMBER UPDATES MEMBER UPDATES By Dennis Poirier
At the last AGM meeting my term was up and so was Tim O’Neill’s. Tim Rayne was nominated and it became a race for two spots between three nominees. The Tims won positions on the board. (no not the coffee!) Dennis signed off a few remaining treasurer forms and ended an era on the board. A board member since 2003, I was a diligent attendee of board meetings up until this close election. As a cast member of a ridiculous 8 films this coming Silver Wave; participant on the crew of 8 of the 10 Cultural Capital program films, only because Michelle Thompson and Jon Culicott were sneaky and filmed their projects early (haha); a crew member of at least a half dozen other films; I will be very active and will continue to be so in the New Brunswick Filmmaker’s Coop scene. I want to congratulate Tim Rayne for being the newest addition to the board. You come in the board at the right time, as the people on the board now are the nicest, knowledgeable people to work with.
Sincere thanks to Donovan Richard, Danny Thebeau, Colin Smart, Bunthivy Nou, Tim O’Neil, Corena Walby and Jeremy Robinson for serving on the board with me and making board meetings an enjoyable experience. I’d also like to thank Cathie and Tony, who preside over the board meetings, for all they do for the membership, above and beyond the call of duty. I live only a few blocks away from the Charlotte Street Arts Center, and will continue to update Cat on my love life, and tell Tony the most recent absurd information/ jokes so he can bug Cat later. In the meantime, I’m still available from most cast roles and technical crew positions. I’m looking to broaden my horizons in drama, but I'm still very interested in comedy. Jason Shipley and Pierre Huard’s Blood Shed is still doing extremely well in festivals around the world, and Pierre and I have cooked up a delicious follow up for this year’s Silver Wave.
I may be on a sabbatical from the board, but my time there allowed me to meet many members, old and new, and I hope I can continue to be their best quiet ambassador, leading by example on volunteer film shoots and continue to grow my network of filmmaking friends.

CALL FOR APPLICAION: EMERGING COMPOSER-DIRECTOR MENTORSHIP PROGRAM
The Atlantic Film Festival Association (AFFA) in partnership with the Guild of Canadian Film Composers (GCFC) and Symphony Nova Scotia (SNS) are pleased to present an innovative program for emerging film composers and directors. Four composers and four film directors will be given the opportunity to work together on the composition of an original score for an original short three-minute film cue with the participation of the 37 musician Symphony Nova Scotia.
Both Composer and Director will benefit from hands on mentorship from established film composers, orchestrators, and recording engineers throughout the entire collaboration. Each team will be given approximately 30 minutes with the orchestra to record their cue in a fully produced recording session at the Rebecca Cohn Auditorium. The Director and Composer will then work with an engineer to edit and mix their takes in 5.1 Surround Sound, which will then be screened at a panel discussion at the 29th Atlantic Film Festival to address the experience and challenges associated with the music creation process from their individual perspective.
Directors should submit a film clip no longer than 3 minutes in duration. This may be part of a work in a progress or a work already completed. In their cover letter/narrative, they should explain why they feel their cue would be suitable for an orchestral score. This film clip should be a locked, final cut with timecode burn-in in a Quicktime DV format. For the purposes of the project, the jury will recognize someone as emerging if they have not worked on a feature length film as a composer or director.
TO DOWNLOAD THE APPLICATION FORM CLICK HERE
Criteria for eligibility:
More established directors and composers are welcome to apply, but should realize that priority will be given to those who are at the emerging stage of their career.
An emerging composer who meets the following criteria is eligible if he/she:
Is actively looking to pursue film and media composing as a full-time career (this is not for hobbyists or students),
Has not received fair-market payment for scoring a feature-length film or documentary,
Has sufficient working knowledge of arranging, composing, and orchestration to successfully complete the project independently.
N.B.: this does not necessarily mean that the composer has worked with orchestra before, but should be familiar with basic arranging and notation.
Has the capability of providing a synthesized mock-up score, synchronized to picture, to provide to their collaborators and mentors.
Has the capability of creating both parts and scores for the recording session.
An emerging director who meets the following criteria is eligible if he/she:
Is actively looking to pursue a full-time career in film (this is not for hobbyists or students),
Has not completed a feature-length film or documentary,
At the time of submission, has a three minute film or portion of a film that is a locked final cut suitable for an orchestral score
This is an opportunity not to be missed. Please visit www.atlanticfilm.com/musicandimage/ for further details regarding the program.

The Man Who Came to Dinner (1942) (112 mins)
Starring: Bette Davis, Ann Sheridan, Monty Woolley, Richard Travis, Jimmy Durante, Billie Burke
Director: William Keighley
While noted acerbic wit, cultural critic, and egotistical radio personality Sheridan Whiteside is on a lecture tour in a small provincial town in Ohio, he condescends to have dinner at the house of dizzy matron Daisy Stanley, wife of a local conservative businessman. Whiteside slips and falls on their front steps, breaking his hip and forcing him to recuperate in their house.
He immediately takes over the entire household with a combination of threats, intimidation, and acid-tongued wit, exiling the Stanleys to the second floor. He holds court in the living room for his wide circle of friends, runs up staggering long-distance bills to world leaders, monopolizes the Stanley servants, and populates the house with a menagerie of exotic animals. Unfortunately for the demanding Whiteside, Maggie Cutler, his trusted secretary and indispensable girl Friday, has fallen in love with a local newspaper man. Although he is pronounced well and free to leave by the local doctor, Sherry feigns his infirmity in order to find away to keep Maggie with him.

AMERICAN SUNSET SEGMENT ON ENTERTAINMENT TONIGHT (ET) FRIDAY AUG 7
(check local listings)
Producer Jackie Giroux, Actors Corey Haim and Frank Molina Interviewed, with clips from NB shoot!
Global Universal Inc. shot feature film American Sunset starring the re-energized long time actor Corey Haim and New York's acting dynamo Frank Molina, Bernard Robichaud (trailer Park Boys) and NB Angela Cullins as the lead Actress in this suspense filled thriller, written and produced by Jackie Giroux.
American Sunset, shot in the Moncton and Fredericton area, is a suspense filled turnstile of emotional demons engulfing one man's obsession to be in the real moment amidst his wife's abduction by a man he believes is a crazed kidnapper. Corey Haim plays “Tom” an artist whose is on the edge as the police are unable to help find his wife “Samantha” (Angela Cullins). He hires an ex-soldier back from Iraq, Arturo (Frank Molina) to help. As Giroux says, "a sinister voice calls up and gives clues that must be followed. It's completely action-filled; you have no idea who the good or bad guy is."
Global Universal Pictures, Inc. completed principal photography on Blue Seduction, starring Billy Zane and Estelle Warren, in the region late last year using the Fredericton area as a prime location . It is a trend that Giroux would love to see continue.
