Job Description:
Publicists are hired to get press coverage for their clients. What does this mean? Publicists are the media world’s version of cheerleaders, to an extent. Their job is to get journalists to write about their client, whoever it might be.
How do publicists get the press to write about their clients? They issue press releases. Most people have come across a press release at some time and these general announcements are sent out en masse to the press to alert them of news and, hopefully, generate stories. Publicists usually write these press releases. These press releases, as you might assume, make announcements about new initiatives and business developments the company is involved in.
Beyond press releases, which are generalized announcements, publicists also cultivate relationships with journalists in order to place stories with them. Good publicists understand the inner-workings of the media so they can recognize the stories that certain journalists want to write about. Certain stories are obvious and don’t require much in the way of publicity: If you’re a publicist who works for Ford and GM buys Ford, there’s no need to generate press interest in that story, since it’s major news in and of itself and journalists will be all over it.
When publicizing or promoting a product, service or person, be inclusive in your releases but be versed to work off script as well. Unless your press release contains a formula for world peace or something equally dramatic, most media are already aware of it so keep it brief, clear and concise.
Jen Munn-Moulton:
“Now that the show has aired, I wanted to let you all know about my friend Jim Lavoie. As soon as I posted about my audition in Charlottetown, Jim sent me a message offering to help me get publicity for the show. He was passionate and energetic about it and got me excited about it more than I already was. He has been diligent and professional and every article written and radio and news promo has been because of him! I cannot thank him enough for the excellent job he has done and would recommend him as a publicist to anyone!!!! Even if I don't get to Banff, he certainly has created a local buzz about me which is a great thing for any entertainer to have! Jim, I was so lucky to have you and I appreciate your hard work and time more than you can imagine! Thank you Jim! Thank you supporters! Keep voting and see what we can accomplish!” Jen
Shortly after writing this note about me It was with great pride that I watched Jenn make it to the finals in Banff where she represented NB with class and talent. In the end she was not voted the champion but she was still a winner in every way possible. I predict much more will be heard from Jen in the very near future- Jim Lavoie on CMT Karaoke Star Finalist (Nationals) Jen Moulton.
