I hate to shamelessly self promote, but CBC is starting up a new show which pits short films against each other for potential cash (a $25,000 development deal).
The catch is, the short film has to get good enough ratings online before it can make it to the television competition stage. I ask that you simply go to the link, watch my film Film Co-op film,
Cold Day in Hell
, and give it a rating. (hopefully you like it, and give it a good rating, but that's up to you...)

A LION'S TALE ROARS INTO FINAL WEEKEND
By: Jim Lavoie
Last weekends filming of The NB Film and NB Filmmakers` Co-operative supported film, "A Lions Tale" was smooth sailing according to Short Film Venture recipient, Director/Writer Bunthivy Nou. The production took place under ideal conditions at The All Saints Anglican Church in Marysville NB (a special thank you goes to All Saints for allowing the Film Co-op crew to shoot there).
"With the zest and talent of my cast and crew" said Nou" We were able to get everything we needed for the weekend completed and knocked off in record time! This weekend's shooting commences on Friday night and continues again on Saturday night. "We have a lot of heavy lifting to do and long hours but my team will get us through" said a confident Nou.
The cast and crew bid farewell to actor Wally MacKinnon, who portrayed Father Holden, as his role wrapped. MacKinnon, who played Team Canada's Doctor in Producer Tim Hogan`s CR72, praised the cast and crew for their professionalism. "Wally was great to work with" said Nou.
(The Short Film Venture Program is an annual co-operative partnership between NB Film and the NB Filmmakers` Co-operative that grants funding to NB filmmakers so they can create a calling card drama or comedy)

RYAN GRIFFITH shows this first-timer how to act: NOTABLE ACTS PLAY OUT LOUD SERIES SPEAKS VOLUMES
By: NBFC Member Jim Lavoie
When you first enter the Charlotte Street Arts Centre Auditorium to be seated for a show in the Play it Out Loud series your eyes are immediately drawn to the stage. The reason is not because of what's on the stage but rather what's not!
There are no elaborately painted backdrops, bright panels, no lights, no microphones, cables, speakers, and no fancy or themed props. If not for a few chairs, music stands (for scripts) the stage would be bare.
This is ground zero, the birthplace for many new plays (100% New Brunswick) within the Notable Acts Theatre Company 2007 summer Festival. It's here where you will discover new, emerging, and established theatrical renderings of the 2007 Play Out Loud series. This years contributors are Bradley O'Donnell (Anything About Anything), Bruce Allen Lynch (Car 7 Where Are You), Ryan Griffith (drift), John Spurway (Ten Years), and Step Taylor (Chapel Arm).
This is all new to me, I had auditioned at open audition for NotaBle Acts and was surprised when I was selected for the Play Out Loud Series. I have zero experience in Theatre but fortunately for me, my two fellow readers, Clarissa Hurley and Mark Savoie, had plenty of talent and stage experience for me to lean on. Later on we would be joined on stage by Theatre New Brunswick's own Ilkay Silk ! We had been cast to read "Car 7 Where Are You ? directed by Ryan Griffith.
The script was humorous yet dealt seriously with the three readers perception or lack of in dealing with terrorism threats in their roles as Taxi Cab drivers. It opens with a finely timed monologue then the cadence morphs into snappy dialogue all the way to closing monologues. It feels like you are in the back of a cab listening to dispatch and cabbies doing their usual verbal jousting which sometimes is a language upon itself !
Our first meeting with Ryan (our director) is a rehearsal (Our only) and he puts us through the paces. He has an engaging persona about him and easily deciphers our individual personality traits as relates to acting/reading. He speaks to each of us about how we perceive our character and projecting that into your reading. He spends more time with me (my inexperience no doubt) spurring me on with humor but driving home the pertinent points. My confidence level is raised by his coaching and now I am pumped up and ready to go!
Its no wonder! Ryan is a graduate of The National Theatre of Canada (2002) and has been with Notable Acts since its inception in 2002. He is the current playwright in residence for Notable Acts and is responsible for the dramaturgy for this years festival ! He will soon be doing a years residency with Theatre New Brunswick.
Showtime is at 8p.m. Saturday July 28 and around 7:45 the patrons start filling into the Auditorium which is cast as a sauna or so it seems. But with programs doubling as fans and fluids at hand they await the opening. We had met backstage earlier to do one more read-through and are good to go. Mark reminds me to project as we head to the stage. On stage are 3 chairs behind 3 music stands where we place our scripts and then sit down while Ryan does the official welcome.
As we sit awaiting Ryan, it is now crystal clear to me what our objective is. The reason for the starkness of the stage, no costumes, no effects is Because It Is All About The Dialogue, Its in your emoting, projecting, accenting, pacing, claratiy and make the script jump out at the audience ! You have been given a game plan, now execute it and make the director and writer proud of your presentation !
Its time. We stand as one, Clarrisa perfectly paces off her monologue, Mark picks it up, back to Clarrsia and the ball is in my hands. I shake off pre-game jitters and away we go. I really get into this and project like hell ! Clarrisa and Mark are excellent and I just give er ! Suddenly its over, way to soon , I want more ,can we do it again is all I am thinking. Applause is bestowed upon us , we acknowledge it and exit the stage.
I need fresh air to cool off and a smoke so I head outside to collect my thoughts. I am thinking about what a rush that was and ways to utilize the experience in the future. It would be useful in any form of presentation ,without the bells and whistles, to ensure your audience is listening ! Finally , watching how listening to the evolution of a play in its infancy can cause audience reaction ultimately displays the power of creative dialogue !
A Shout Out to Play Out: BRAVO!
Note: other NBFC members involved with NotAble Acts this year included Denis Poirier, Colin Smart, Rob Gemmell and Britany Sparrow.

SAINT JOHN -
Film Debut: Sharing the Waters
You are invited to attend the debut of Sharing the Waters, a film by NBFC member Sarah Bood, a student from Dalhousie University, produced for the Fundy North Fishermen's Association.
The film looks at how increasing industrial developments in Saint John are affecting the traditional fishery. Local fishermen share their concerns and the many efforts they have made to work with project proponents, harbor officials and other user groups on sharing the waters.
The film is short but it has an important message: The inshore fishery is an
important part of our region's cultural and economic heritage and with
meaningful consultation fishing and industry can continue to co-exist.
It is both touching and humorous and was a really rewarding experience to
produce. I would like to thank the NB Film Co-op for all their help and
advice,
especially "Uncle Jeff", Jeff Combs. This is my first film and not my last. I've caught the bug!

FREDERICTON - THEATRE ST. THOMAS PRESENTS: 'BENDING THE BARD IN THE BOX - An evening of skewed Shakespeare scenes & blueberry crême brûlee dessert
AUG. 23-25
Theatre St. Thomas has persuaded the most renowned
playwright of all time to go drag-sort of.
In the last days of summer, the Black Box Theatre will
host some of frilly Billy Shakespeare's most famous scenes
as though the genders therein were melted and mixed under
the hot sun.
For this rare theatrical experience, ten past and present
STU students will switch, twist, and curse gender roles in
scenes known for their sexual tension and male-female
power struggles. Supporting this textual transformation
will be men in skirts, women in ball caps, and the most
fuddled foreplay to hit the Black Box since Godspell.
The production will examine tragedies such as Macbeth,
Othello and King Lear, and a heap of lighter works
including The Tempest, A Midsummer Night's Dream and Much
Ado About Nothing. Each will find a unique slant for the
sexes based on the script, as well as assigned historical
settings ranging from the Wild West to the swingin'
sixties.
If all of that were not enough of a treat, TST will also
serve a favorite summertime dessert to its audience at
intermission. The cost of a serving of blueberry Crème
Brûlée and your choice of coffee or tea has been added to
the ticket price for the show. The seasonal indulgence is
meant to be the perfect accent for the night's quirky and
experimental entertainment.
The play is directed by the Director of Drama at St.
Thomas, Ilkay Silk, and features lighting design by Chris
Saad. It runs Aug. 23-25 with an 8 PM start time each
night. Tickets ($15 adults, $10 students) must be
purchased by calling Student Affairs at (506) 452-0578
For further information, contact Ilkay Silk at

FREDERICTON - UNDER THE STARS: CLASSIC FILMS IN THE PARK
Sunday, August 19th
at dusk in Barracks Square, Historical Garrison District (Queen and Carleton Streets).
FEATURE PRESENTATION:
CITIZEN KANE
(2 hours & 24 min) 1941
CITIZEN KANE is Orson Welles's greatest achievement--and a landmark of cinema history. The story charts the rise and fall
of a newspaper publisher whose wealth and power ultimately isolates him in his castle-like refuge.
The film's protagonist, Charles Foster Kane, was based on a composite of Howard Hughes and William Randolph Hearst--so much so that Hearst tried to have the film suppressed. Every aspect of the production marked an advance in film language: the deep focus and deeply shadowed cinematography (from Gregg Toland); the discontinuous narrative, relying heavily on flashbacks and newsreel footage (propelled by a script largely written by Herman L. Mankiewicz); the innovative use of sound and score (sound by Bailey Fesler and James G. Stewart, music composed and conducted by Bernard Herrmann); and the ensemble acting forged
in the fires of Welles's Mercury Theatre (featuring the film debuts of, among others, Joseph Cotten,
Everett Sloane, and Agnes Moorehead).
Every moment of the film, every shot, has been choreographed to perfection.
The film is essential viewing, quite possibly the greatest film ever made and, along with THE BIRTH OF A NATION,
certainly the most influential.
