Colin Smart is many things. He is a director, a writer, a producer. He is an organizer, a leader, a mentor. Colin has inspired many of us along the way, taking production assistants and turning them into actors, introducing theatre actors to the wonderful world of film, and inspiring wannabe filmmakers to take the giant leap into the world of directing. A member of the New Brunswick Film Co-op for over a decade, Colin has impacted the life of everyone who has met him with his evil grin and his mischievous blue eyes. On August 20, Colin turned 40. So, as every faithful production manager should do, I'm choosing to embarrass him by gushing about his wonderfulness to the entire Film Co-op listserv. So here's to Colin, happy birthday! Lots of love and a sloppy kiss on the forehead from your ever faithful PM and the rest of the TOTSM Crew. Britany Sparrow --------------------------------------------------------------

Universally recognized as one of the most important documentary filmmakers of all time, Albert (along with his brother David) pioneered “Direct Cinema”, Direct Cinema letting the drama of life unfold without scripts, sets, interviews or narration. Their approach sparked a revolution in documentary filmmaking throughout the 1960s and 1970s and has greatly impacted the filmmakers that have come afterwards. Together they created three of the classics of non-fiction feature film, Gimme Shelter, Salesman and Grey Gardens. Albert’s’ impressive career has included thirty-six films, a Guggenheim Fellowship (1965), a Peabody, an Emmy, five Lifetime Achievement Awards, the award for best cinematography at Sundance and most recently, the Columbia Dupont Award (2004). In 1999 Eastman Kodak saluted him as one of the 100 world's finest cinematographers (as a side note, French filmmaker Jean-Luc Godard called him the greatest American cinematographer of all time). Slate Development Pilot Program for English-language market Montreal, August 28, 2007 – Telefilm Canada announces the creation of the Slate Development Pilot Program for the English-language market through the Canada Feature Film Fund (the “CFFF”). Through the provision of predictable funding, the program will assist Canadian companies in their efforts to ensure that their development slate is positioned to help achieve the CFFF’s primary objective – to increase Canadian audiences in theatres for Canadian feature films. The primary objective of this pilot program is to encourage the companies to develop Canadian feature films that have high box office potential, in a range of genres. Second, the initiative seeks to achieve the objective of building more meaningful relationships between producers and distributors. The Pilot Program serves as an alternate source of financing for Canadian production companies who have not benefited from a performance envelope, and will take the form of a non-interest bearing line of credit for companies that have three (3) or more projects in advanced stages of development. The Slate Development Pilot Program is a three-year initiative, and is specifically geared towards Canadian production companies in the business of feature film development and production. Key points:
The successful applicant(s) will have multiple projects requiring development financing.
The deadline for applications is November 30, 2007. Applications are to be submitted to the Telefilm office in your region. click here
