Errol was great in every sense. Besides being human and humorous,
he had the key qualities of a filmmaker; conviction and determination. He was
not afraid to put his money on the line when it came to a project and once
bought an old 16mm camera just so he could shoot test scenes for what was then
called "Fire on Ice." He was grounded in reality, and knew what freedom meant.
Free the Meat, Errol.

Errol was a true gentleman and a genuinely warm and funny man. He never
seemed to be soured by any setbacks life threw at him and always had a smile and
a laugh. A great guy to talk with, work with and drink with. A sad loss for all
who knew him.
Kevin Holden, Film Co-op Alumni, based in Montreal

I
only met Errol a few times so I can not speak too much about him personally. I
want to say how moved I was by his film "When Voices Rise." It was so well made
that I found encouragement as a New Brunswick Filmmaker to strive even harder.
It was such a powerful film. I also found it so inspiring to see that change
indeed can happen when we stand strong for what is right. I should also
acknowledge that the film Errol was in, 'A Parable in Black and White' was a
major influence to create my film Seeds. What an amazing filmmaker and human
being Errol was. I hope we will challenge ourselves to live up to his standard.

I met Errol many times over the years I was Executive Director of New
Brunswick Film. Errol was always a gentleman and I always enjoyed our
conversations. He had found his niche in the film industry and got to tell his stories. I know he had many friends at the New Brunswick Film Co-op. His
presence will be missed.

Dear Tony,
Lori McCurdy just told me the news of Errol’s passing. I’m
so sorry he had to leave us so early. He was such a joy to be around. I know you
personally and the Film Co-op must be devastated. You have lost a prince of a
man.
All my best wishes to you and the New Brunswick Filmmakers
Co-operative.

Cat
and Tony,
This is deeply sad and sudden. He's one of the reasons I
wanted to move here. Meeting him in ’98 at the Atlantic Film Festival was an
inspiration. I’m cryin’ at my desk.

Hello Cathie and Tony;
I've been so sad about Errol's death.
I've watched Errol from afar for quite some time. The first time I saw the
larger-than-life person ERROL WILLIAMS was when he accepted his first award at
the Atlantic Film Festival. That was quite a few years back!
The first
time I felt like I was starting to know him was last year in Fredericton with
the two of you. We kept in touch by email for a while with the intention of
getting together for more intense conversations! But then he was back in Bermuda
again - working, working.... Errol had the most incredible personality and his
intelligence and passion were inspiring to me.
I wanted to have more of
this guy - and I'm sure you still do and will for some time. So I want you to
know I'm thinking of all of you. I'm also thinking of Errol, his amazing
achievements, his sheer joi de vivre, his intense commitment to social
justice... What a guy.
My thoughts will be with you. Take care and
remember him well.

Hi
Tony and Cathy
Errol was such a huge part of the co-op; it’s hard to
believe he’s gone. He was a great inspiration for me personally, but he was an
example for anyone who wanted to make films at the co-op, a mentor you could
look to for real world filmmaking experience. His door was always open.
He always struck me as someone who had the personality for filmmaking:
tremendous patience, unwavering confidence, a great sense of humour. He was
generous with his time and experience and if you wanted to learn filmmaking, he
made you feel welcome on his set or in his editing room. He will be missed.
Ken Furlong, Film Co-op Alumni, based in Ottawa

I am
just back from holidays and saw the news about the passing of Errol Williams.
Though I did not know him, I was familiar with his work. And I know that, over
the years, he had been a good friend and colleague of yours.
Please
accept my condolences for the loss of your friend.

How do I get into these messes?
Dear NB film Co-op members, I am doing fine.
I wasn't in the brightest of
moods recently as I was recovering from a kidney stone and still suffering
from bronchitis. Now healthy and smoke-free, I am
ecstatic that the board members have carried over from last year.
Bunthivy Nou has accepted to be president again, and Donovan Richard will return
as Vice President while I'm back again as treasurer.
I've taken the torch from Film Co-op actor Chisholm Pothier (who has moved to Ottawa) and taken it way
too far. As well, I've been trained on the Panasonic digital camera and many other pieces of
equipment the Film Co-op has to offer to its trained full members in good
standing. Being a beefy willing guy, I work both
sides of the camera.
At Silver Wave 2007, my name and face will show up a lot.
In fact, Cat is contemplating sending me fake e-newsletters without casting
calls so that I won't overwhelm the 2008 festival, but I've already started
planting the seeds.
In September, I have been cast in two productions, one before and
one after a trip to Montreal to see my favorite band live: Genesis. (Pierre
Huard's Bloodshed and Donovan Richard's Rebecca). I will be assisting Danny
Thebeau and Bunthivy Nou on their Short Film Venture productions in August. I'm also taking part in
NotaBle Acts "Taking it to the Streets" at Officer's Square at lunch
time the week of July 30th to Aug 3rd and "Read It Out Loud" on Aug
2nd at the Charlotte Street Art Center AND directing my first film, a
documentary called "Paper",
prior to all this.
I also procrastinated
too long to send Co-op member Tanya Swinimar the raw footage of my first film, Hell Dog and
it will not be finished for this year's festival. At some point in the
documentary I will apologize to the star of the film, Austin Perry, my nephew,
for this enormous editing delay.
As much as I love acting, I love writing even more, as Facebook friends can
attest. I've put writing for Here magazine on hold, because I need some sleep at
night. What started as something fun became tedious to write until 3am to meet
the mid week deadline.
I will have the month of October to myself to put the
final touches on a few unfinished projects and then help out any way I can at
the Silver Wave Film Festival in November. December I will max out my credit
lines yet again for Christmas. So I have the rest of the year planned, and I
hope to catch many of you great members at this year's AGM BBQ at Tony
and Cathie's!

27th Atlantic Film Festival Opens With Shake Hands With The Devil
Halifax, NS, CANADA, July 25, 2007– The powerfully moving Shake Hands With The Devil, a dramatization from Halifax-based Oscar®-winning producer Michael Donovan, and multi award winning producer Laszlo Barna, will open this year’s 27th Atlantic Film Festival at the NBC Universal Canada’s Opening Night Gala screening on Thursday, September 13, 2007.
Based on Canadian Lieutenant-General Romeo Dallaire’s award-winning book, Shake Hands With The Devil tells the story of Dallaire’s posting in Rwanda and his mounting horror and frustration at his inability, and the world’s indifference, in preventing the Rwandan genocide in 1994 that killed over 800,000.
Filmed in Rwanda using many of the actual locations described in the book, and in Halifax, Shake Hands With The Devil was directed by Roger Spottiswoode. The film stars esteemed Canadian actor Roy Dupuis (Maurice Richard, That Beautiful Somewhere) as Dallaire, and Deborah Kara Unger (Crash, No Way Home) as one of the few journalists who remained in Rwanda after the genocide began.
“We are thrilled to be opening the Festival with such an affecting film," said Festival Director Lia Rinaldo. "Michael Donovan has an impeccable ability to recognize film projects that will ultimately alter people's views on critical world issues."
Following the screening, the red carpet NBC Universal Canada Opening Night Party celebrates the start of another 10-days of fantastic films with the most anticipated outdoor party of the Halifax season.
Tickets to the NBC Universal Canada Opening Night Gala and Party are available exclusively online at the Atlantic Film Festival Online Box Office at www.atlanticfilm.com on Thursday, August 2, 2007.
From Wednesday August 29th tickets & packages can also be purchased at the Atlantic Film Festival Box Office sponsored by The Daily News at 1599 South Park Street in Halifax.
A full schedule of films and events at the 27th Atlantic Film Festival will be announced Wednesday, August 29, 2007.
Shake Hands With The Devil is distributed in Canada by Seville Pictures.
