This is NOT a production seminar!
From the smallest independent film to the largest block-buster release, movies can teach us a great deal about how to achieve our own goals as filmmakers to create a mood, characters, a story, an atmosphere, a pace. But films are very complicated, involving hundreds, thousands of details. The plot, if there is one, is merely the skeleton of the film, the rest of it fleshes out and colours what we experience. If we educate our eyes and ears, we can learn while watching.
This seminar will investigate the many features which construct a film: script and writing, actors, credits, production design, costume design, sound, editing, and music: all these are part of the whole, each operating as part of the puzzle which makes up the complete picture. By close viewing of selections of a wide variety of films, this seminar will help you to look at and understand how a film achieves its ends.

INSTRUCTOR'S BIOGRAPHY
Budapest-born Les Krizsan is an accomplished Canadian cinematographer who wears the title of dean of cinematographers in the Atlantic provinces. In a story worthy of a screenplay, Krizsan has worked his way to the top of his profession through sweat, ingenuity, sheer gall and a sense of humour.
Growing up in Budapest, Les was an amateur still photographer who learned how to process film from his next door neighbour. He was 16 and attending technical school when the Hungarian revolution was crushed by the Soviet Union in 1956, and he and his friend Louis, decided to escape to Austria. From there they chose to go to Canada as refugees. Les ended up in Halifax because the boat landed there.
With extensive experience in television, documentaries, commercials, MOW's and films, Les brings a wealth of experience to every production he works on. In more recent years, Les has worked on the big budget project Lexx: The Dark Zone miniseries and Lexx: The Series as well as New Waterford Girl and numerous other projects.
