NEW MEMBER
Jeff Hackett
Hey folks! My name is Jeff Hackett, and I'm pumped on becoming a full member at the NB Film Co-op! I can't wait to meet those of you who have a strong interest in film, and I hope I'll wind up collaborating on a couple of projects with some of you.
A little about myself: I grew up in the town of Quispamsis, but moved to Fredericton a few years ago to attend UNBF, where I recently
graduated with a degree in Political Science.
The independent film scene in Fredericton and NB really caught my eye shortly after a friend of mine took me to see the Silver Wave Film Festival
last year. Before that, I had no idea what short film festivals were all about, and I was excited because I've always been a huge fan of lower
budget productions. My buddy told me about the NB Film-Coop and how it works, and I freaked! I thought "we could teach
ourselves how to make some half decent short flicks!" With this in mind, I signed up for a film course at the University, which was
taught by Tony Merzetti. His class kicked
plenty of ass, and I took a lot away from the experience. I was Director of Photography for our class shoot "Captain
Awesome," which meant I was able to learn how to operate a 16mm camera… which meant I was pumped! I can't wait to get my hands on
16mm again. I'll work on digital as well.
While I was in Tony's class, because I had access to all the University camera equipment needed to make a film, I decided to film a short film of my own on my own time. I wrote, directed, edited and acted in "OVERKILL," while the same friend who introduced me to the Fredericton film scene acted as Director of Photography. If anybody would like to eventually see it, contact me, and I'll gladly give you a copy. It was shown at this year's student film festival. After I fully complete the soundtrack, I may try to enter it into some other festivals, but I'm unsure yet. It's only our first film, and we can do better. It won't be
for a little while, but the next short film I will be making is called "THIN ICE," and will have a very similar style to that of OVERKILL. (over the top craziness). When I finally tackle this project, I would love to have some Film-Coop members be a part of it!
Hopefully I'll have a chance to meet and get to know many of you in the future.

REVEALING FILM TECHNIQUE:
EDUCATING YOUR EYES
May 26, Saturday, 11am-5pm
New Brunswick Film Co-op
(732 Charlotte Street, downstairs resource centre)
Fee: $20 for Film Co-op Members
$30 for Non-Members
This is NOT a production seminar!
From the smallest independent film to the largest block-buster release, movies can teach us a great deal about how to achieve our own goals as filmmakers to create a mood, characters, a story, an atmosphere, a pace. But films are very complicated, involving hundreds, thousands of details. The plot, if there is one, is merely the skeleton of the film, the rest of it fleshes out and colours what we experience. If we educate our eyes and ears, we can learn while watching.
This seminar will investigate the many features which construct a film: script and writing, actors, credits, production design, costume design, sound, editing, and music: all these are part of the whole, each operating as part of the puzzle which makes up the complete picture. By close viewing of selections of a wide variety of films, this seminar will help you to look at and understand how a film achieves its ends.

27th ATLANTIC FILM FESTIVAL SEEKS FEATURE FILM OUTLINES
Halifax, NS, May 14, 2007 – The 27th Atlantic Film Festival, announces its Call for Feature Film Outlines for the Festival’s Inspired Script program.
The Inspired Script program offers a unique opportunity for six Atlantic Canadian writers to develop their feature film outlines to treatments and pitch them at the 27th Atlantic Film Festival, September 13-22, 2007. The program will culminate in the selection of one screenplay that will be eligible to receive a maximum of $20,000 in total in development financing from the presenting sponsors and will work with a veteran story editor to bring the treatment to a first draft script to be presented as the Script Out Loud at the 28th Atlantic Film Festival in 2008.
The deadline for feature film outline submissions is Friday June 8, 2007. The official entry form is available for download from the AFF website at www.atlanticfilm.com under “Filmmakers & Delegates.” Participating writers will be announced June 29, 2007.
"Both Telefilm Canada and Astral Media The Harold Greenberg Fund stepped up once again to not only support this innovative program but to help us develop it even further,” says Lia Rinaldo, Festival Director. "In an effort to encourage a whole new round of scripts from our talented Atlantic writing pool we have taken it back to the very first step of script writing with a call for script outlines this year. Our hope is that all level of writers will find appeal with this new approach and allow us the opportunity to help develop their ideas from laptop to red carpet.“
An Inspired Script jury will select six outlines that will be developed into treatments through two intensive weekend workshops under the guidance of Al Magee, one of Canada's top story editors. The writers will then have the chance to work with Jan Miller to hone their pitching technique with an abridged version of her reputable Pitcher Perfect workshop. All six writers will take part in Inspired Script industry events at the 27th Atlantic Film Festival, including the Inspired Pitch & Matchmaking Session. These treatments will then be vetted back to a jury of Inspired Script sponsors who will choose the one
that will receive further development funding for the next year. The chosen project will also receive a live, staged full read-through with local actors at Script Out Loud during the 28th Atlantic Film Festival.
Allan Magee
is currently the story-editor-in-residence at the Canadian Film Centre and has more than 20 years of experience in television drama and feature film script development. Magee has also done broadcast consulting for CBC, CTV, Fox, Disney and Channel 4, among others, and has produced several hundred hours of television, short films, documentaries and feature films.
