The Co-op also seeks to give a voice to, and develop the talents of, artists that would not otherwise have the opportunity to express their views in film and video.

Spotlight

The Los Angeles Indie Film Front, tales from an outsider

By Saint John Film Co-op member
Gretchen Kelbaugh

This summer, after two weeks shooting in London and Belfast and a vacation to Quebec, the last thing I wanted was another trip. So when I heard in August that my short, "Piece o' Cake", was accepted into the Broad Humor Film Festival in Venice, California, I easily decided not to go.

Things soon changed. My current project is a self-sponsored documentary about how to get more women elected into government. I consider Kim Campbell, our only woman Prime Minister and North America's only woman head-of-state, to be the biggest fish I could land for an interview. The first time I asked her assistant, I had a pleasant reply that Kim would agree to an interview but that she now lived in Paris. Rats.

When I decided to go to London, partly to shoot footage for this doc, I asked Ms Campbell's assistant if I could come to Paris for the interview. Her reply: "Kim will be in Los Angeles and Arizona this summer."

Being an indie filmmaker, I'm addicted to rejection. When I heard I'd been accepted at the Broad Humor Film Festival, I whipped off an email to Kim's assistant asking whether she was still in LA and would she grant me an interview? "Yes and yes" was the reply. California, Here I Come.

I wouldn't have gone if NB Film didn't offer the wonderful reimbursement for travel expenses when you're promoting your work. As well, I have cousins near LA and thus a free bed.

I conscripted my cousin Gail, in Orange County, to be my crew. Kim welcomed us into her home, rented for the summer with her husband, a "Steinway concert pianist", who was performing in a play there. I wondered briefly why the spouse of someone in the arts could remain a staunch Conservative but kept my mouth shut. I've heard he's a much younger man than Kim, so cheers for that.

Our ex-PM and first woman Justice Minister was an excellent and polished interviewee. For example, without being told, she answered all questions by incorporating the question into the answer. Very intelligent, well-spoken and passionate, she's also the most knowledgeable person I've ever talked to about world politics and serves on a committee of ex-heads-of-state that promotes world peace and democracy. She is adamant that we need more women in office.

The film festival was a great experience. It's quite small, this being its second year. Being small has advantages (the Silver Wave Film Fest is small and inviting). The organizers were very welcoming and the filmmakers had lots of time to talk, eat and drink together, always in the same location in a room below the screenings. In a big festival like the Atlantic, a filmmaker can feel ignored and unimportant.

I was thrilled that "Piece o' Cake" won the award for Best No Budget Short. It's nice to be noticed out of country. "Piece o' Cake" played at the deReel Film Festival in Melbourne, Australia and at this one in California. It shows that it's more about story than production value, as I spent $9.95 on ice cream cake and gave my son $50 for the music for this one. And even though I shot for only a couple hours, I thought about the storyline for many hours over several weeks beforehand.

One minor thrill was meeting the actor in one of the shorts by the director who won the On the Lot competition. This actor is a friend of my cousin. He came to meet me and watch my short. He and his director-friend went to film school together in Florida and moved to LA to try to further their careers. The director met with Steven Spielberg the week I was there and is going to make a multi-million dollar short film with him. It's nice to know that little unknown outsiders won the humongo competition. I haven't seen this short yet but it's about a man with a glass eyeball which falls out of his head but continues to "see" for the guy.

If I learned anything at the festival, it's that even LA, Toronto and Vancouver filmmakers are struggling. To be in LA is about the worse place for newbies as there is no state help for filmmakers, as we have with NB Film. Certain states offer assistance, such as Michigan. The Americans and the other Canadians I met all have the same problems we have here. It made me feel less unfortunate for being in Saint John, NB in this difficult profession. It's a crap shoot from coast to coast.

" Growing Op is a Career Op"
For Denis Theriault of Fredericton

By Fredericton Film Co-op member Jim Lavoie

21 year old Denis Theriault, of Fredericton, is a principal actor in the feature film Growing Op being filmed now, August 25 to September 26, in Moncton/Riverview and Tracadie- Sheila

Growing Op, a comedy/drama, deals with the teenage angst of a home-schooled son of two career pot growers. All the kid wants is the chance to be "real", attend high school, hook up with girls and get a taste of the outside world.

Theriault will be among notable actors Rachel Blanchard (Snakes on a Plane), Rosanna Arquette (Pulp Fiction), Alberta Watson (24), Daniel MacIvor (Past Perfect), Steven Yaffee (Dark Oracle), and Katie Boland (The Life Before This). Other New Brunswick actors include Darcy Cormier, Brandon Ellis, Nicole Maillet, and Jason Daley.

Theriault is cast as Shaun, who can best be described as a self-perpetuating nerd. His bespectacled slight of frame character becomes a target of school bullying. He is not, however, without defenses of his own.

"I love the script, its awesome," says an excited Theriault. "To act in a feature with this caliber of talent is a dream-come true."

Theriault, a self-confessed film buff, can rattle off information on directors, producers and actors at will. His addiction was developed at an early age due to his serious interest in film and theatre. Born in Fredericton, he attended Le Centre communautaire Sainte-Anne and became heavily involved in theatre there and with Theatre New Brunswick's Theatre School. He took to acting naturally and at the age of ten did a one day stint on the hit television series Starhunter. "It is still in circulation today, but no residuals are coming my way," laughs Theriault.

Theriault also auditioned for the CBC television MOW, At The End Of The Day: The Sue Rodriquez Story. He was one of two final actors up for the role of Sue Rodriquez's son. This experience only fueled his desire to be in film or around film in some capacity so, throughout his teenage years he continued to immerse himself in all things film/theatre.

Theriault is also an exceptional singer. He has performed at official government functions, weddings and parties. Twice, he has made the short list for Canadian Idol and was seen by the official judges who complimented him on his presentation and stage sense. Theriault is involved in making videos in addition to acting. In fact he just finished making a music video called, Breakdown, which he wrote and sings in.

Last year was a big year for Theriault as he took on the principle role in NB Film Co-op director Joel Thompson's indie feature film They Didn't Make It, set for release in late fall this year.

"We had a zero dollar budget so everyone pitched in to do anything and everything. It was hands on training and it felt like a NB indie film school," says Theriault. "I think a lot of people will be surprised with the quality of our feature film."

Theriault is also interested in directing and he finally took the plunge this year. He directed, wrote and acted in a twenty minute psychological drama entitled Abort. He has submitted his film to the NB Silver Wave Film Festival which juries all films for consideration each year. If accepted, his film will debut at either Shorts I or Shorts II at the Silver Wave Film Festival which runs November 8-11 this year

"Denis is very multi-talented and very committed", says Film Co-op Membership Services Director, Cat LeBlanc. "We have a growing number of young active NBFC members who are producing and creating on a regular basis now and he is part of that group."

When he has wrapped for Growing OP, Theriault intends to work on projects for a new production company based in Fredericton, called Timeline Productions. It will consist of Theriault, Joel Thompson, and Jesse Anthony, all active NB Film Co-op members. The official launch will be soon. "There are many options open to me," says Theriault. "But, you know this is Saturday so, ask me on Sunday and who knows what I will say, it's just that open!"

It's a Wrap for Revved Up

By Moncton Film Co-op member Jason Chisholm

Shooting on Danny Thebeau's comedy "All Revved Up," wrapped up last weekend. The cast and crew who gave their all over the past two weekends were relieved to have finished what they started, but also so sad to see it go. It was a jovial set full of friends and laughter. No melodrama or attitudes, just one happy family working hard for a common goal. As an actor on the set I was able to slide in and out of the commotion to see everyone on top of their game.

The camera and lighting crew were relentless in achieving what D.O.P Jeremy Robinson asked of them. A simple call of their name or request of a task and they were on their feet in no time with the job accomplished. The small sound squad lead by Rob Gemmel were always attentive and while shooting under a heavy traffic area for planes overhead kept their patience and ours, no matter how eager we were. And speaking of things being kept calm and quiet what a marvelous team of A.D.'s with duties being shared by the ever friendly and reassuring Corena Gillcash-Walby as 1st A.D and Donovan Richard as 2nd AD.

One person who was often being called in only to be shooshed out even quicker was our wonderful make-up artist Jennifer Chaisson who helped make us look marvelous or terrible as the script called for. All this was lead by our ever focused and lovable production manger Britany Sparrow who will likely go grey long before her time. These are only a few of the names and positions which helped make this production such a treat to work on. Each and every person deserves praise for their labour and attention to detail. I would like to thank them for their brilliance, and excellence.

Only one group remains for which I owe special thanks and that's the animated props, A.K.A. the actors. Comedy is tricky but the cast handled it like pros. With various degree's of experience and styles the cast pulled together and gave some outstanding performances.

Last but not least, Filmmaker, Danny Thebeau was vigilant throughout the production. He never lost focus and kept his eye on the prize, so to speak. It goes without saying that without Dan none of this would have been possible, but I still want to extend a giant thank you for such a great experience and for letting me, as an actor, have fun and go places I normally wouldn't/couldn't in an average day. For bringing us all together and giving us something to be proud of no matter what our talents or tasks might have been. And for anything else that I or we might be forgetting to say. Next up for "All Revved Up" is the film edit, and then hopefully we will all see it on the big screen at Silver Wave next year!

Photoshop CS is no doubt the most significant Photoshop move towards digital photographers. The simplicity of the Photoshop CS interface is as deceiving as its predecessors and at first it appears as if little has changed, making the transition from Photoshop 7 to Photoshop CS very natural, preserving most of your Photoshop learning curve.

However, a closer look reveals a large number of exciting new features ranging from major things such as RAW support, and the Histogram Palette to minor things such as Crop and Straighten and the Bicubic Smoother and Bicubic Sharper interpolation options. Take a guided tour and learn the basics (and a few inside tips) in this fact-filled introduction of Photoshop CS.

INSTRUCTOR BIOGRAPHY
With 23 years of freelance experience in Graphic Design, John Christenson has worked through many versions of Photoshop and is presently teaching Photoshop CS2 at the Centre for Arts and Technology.

Arts in NB

Fredericton Monday Night Films Series

Sept 10, 2007, 8:00pm
WAITRESS
Cast: Keri Russell, Nathan Fillion, Cheryl Hines, Adrienne Shelly, Jeremy Sisto, Andy Griffith
Runtime: 107 minutes
Year: 2007
Language: English

Jenna, the eponymous waitress, is played to perfection by the endearing Keri Russell (“Felicity,” THE UPSIDE OF ANGER). Jenna works in a diner that serves as a hub of her small town’s social activity. Her modest but intriguing claim to fame is the diverse array of delectable pies that she bakes daily and which reflect her feelings about her life, which is well on the way to spiraling out of control. Jenna has just found out that she’s pregnant, but her marriage is not working out, to say the least. Her marital problems are fodder for much conversation at the diner, where Jenna vents to her friends and fellow waitresses Becky (Cheryl Hines, “Curb Your Enthusiasm, CAKE, KEEPING UP WITH THE STEINS) and Dawn (played by Shelly).

Jenna’s husband, Earl (Jeremy Sisto, “Six Feet Under,” IN MEMORY OF MY FATHER), is an infantile, sexist brute with whom Jenna can hardly imagine raising a baby. Soon, Jenna finds herself romantically entangled with the new local OB/GYN, Dr. Pomatter (TV actor Nathan Fillion), which certainly doesn’t make her life any easier or the decisions she must make about her future any more simple. The kind of film that leaves a long, lingering and sweet impression, WAITRESS is a universally compelling gem.

“This sweetheart of a comedy boasts a hilarious and heartfelt performance by Keri Russell….” – Peter Travers, Rolling Stone

The Film Series lineup is available on the NB Film Co-op website at: http://www.nbfilmcoop.com/fs.htm

Tickets and memberships for the Monday Night Film Series are available at the door, Tilley Hall, Room 102. Regular admission is $7 per screening, $3 for members.
